Chapter 260: Chapter 258: The Confident Riddle

Despite Fred and George’s excuses being quite adequate and reasonable, they still had their ears twisted by Mrs. Weasley.

The reason was that the ink almost sprayed into the plate of sausages.

Fortunately, Harry stepped in promptly, taking all the blame, and Mrs. Weasley merely gave a gentle twist before letting Fred and George go.

After Mrs. Weasley left, Harry whispered an explanation, and it was then that Fred and George realized they had misunderstood earlier.

”So, what you wanted wasn’t this kind of Automatic Ink Spray Quill?” Fred asked while rubbing his ear.

”Of course not.” Harry wiped the ink from his face, ”Hermione would never write to inquire about something unrelated to studies.”

Fred and George thought about it, and indeed, that earnest Hermione, with the ”little Professor McGonagall” look, probably wouldn’t do that.

It’s worth mentioning that they were the ones who came up with this nickname.

”It’s a kind of quill that automatically releases ink while writing.”

Harry looked at Ron and asked, ”Do you have it with you now?”

”No.” Ron picked up a sausage, ”I mean, who would carry a quill when having breakfast.”

”Dear brother, could you please bring it here for us to see?” George asked with a smile.

Ron initially wanted to refuse, but being stared at by everyone, he could only reluctantly put down the half-eaten sausage and went to his room to fetch the quill.

”Is this the one?”

George took it and started scribbling on Harry’s notice, quickly covering the paper with ink marks.

”It’s indeed convenient for doing homework.”

George stroked his chin, like our waterproof wet-proof badge, this quill must have a Refilling Spell on it.

”Refilling Spell?” Harry blinked, evidently hearing about this charm for the first time.

”Are you discussing studies?”

At this moment, Mr. Weasley sat down at the dining table, smiling at Harry as he said, ”I think I heard you ask about the Refilling Spell, it’s quite a practical charm, just like this...”

He tapped Harry’s cup with his wand, and the pumpkin juice, originally only halfway full, suddenly started bubbling up, quickly filling the cup.

”Wow...” Harry’s mouth dropped open in surprise, ”But... Professor McGonagall said magic can’t conjure food...”

”It’s not conjured...” Mr. Weasley explained, ”It merely transferred the pumpkin juice from the kitchen into your cup, saving the journey time.

I guess... this charm must have been invented by a drinker.”

Harry nodded, then looked at Fred and George, ”Can you make such a quill?”

Fred was silent for a moment, ”What did you just ask?”

”You can also...”

”It’s not that, it’s what you asked when we just came down.”

Harry thought about it and uncertainly said, ”Haven’t seen Kael lately, has he gone out again?”

”No, he’s been in his room reading.” Fred calmly replied:

”He’s always like that, you’ll get used to it.” George returned the quill to Ron, ”By the way, did you guys know? The Chudley Cannons actually beat the Vratsa Vultures this year.”

”That’s the third-ranked team... could the bottom-ranked Cannons be rising?”

Fred and George deftly shifted the topic.

While Harry was puzzled, upon hearing something related to Quidditch, he quickly forgot about the quill and eagerly joined in.

”The Cannons won? How do you know!”

”It was Cedric, he went to watch the match...”

...

On the other side, Kael was indeed in his room, but not reading.

Not needed for the time being...

After a two-day interval, Kael took the diary out from the box.

He stared at Riddle’s name for a while, then turned to the second blank page, naturally copying his Transfiguration spell notes with his quill.

But before he could write much, the words started to fade, finally getting absorbed by the paper and vanishing without a trace.

Soon after, a new line of text mysteriously appeared on the blank page, using the ink he had just used.

[Hello, are you a Hogwarts student?]

The words flickered for a few seconds, then disappeared.

Kael’s expression slightly changed, picked up the quill again, and quickly wrote a long paragraph on the paper:

”Who are you? Where are my notes, and why can you talk to me and know I’m a Hogwarts student, is this some kind of Dark Arts item?”

The writing faded, and it was quite a while before new text appeared again.

[I am Tom Riddle, not a Dark Arts item, but a memory kept in the diary. Like those magic paintings in the castle, I can thus communicate with you.]

[You just wrote precautions for turning stationary items into animals, which is from the Intermediate Transfiguration Guide, you must be a third-year student.]

Kael raised an eyebrow.

It seemed Tom Riddle was very patient, providing answers to every question, leaving no gaps.

Kael thought for a moment, writing:

”I know those paintings and often talk to them... but this is the first time I’ve seen such a magical diary.”

”You’re right, I’ll be in third year after the term starts.”

This time Riddle quickly replied,

[Are you studying even during the holidays? I bet you’re just as academically excellent as I am.]

”I’ve memorized all the books!” Kael wrote rapidly, his handwriting even a bit messy, ”and I’m still the top of the year.”

[I knew I wouldn’t be wrong, we should get along very well.]

”Are you top of the year too?”

[Always have been.]

Riddle seemed eager for Kael to believe him, writing quickly again.

[I even received the Special Services to the School Award in fifth year, you can see my name in the Trophy Room.]

What’s so great about that, I have one too, and even an extra one compared to you...

Kael thought this in his mind, picking up the quill:

”Special Services Award... that is quite an impressive achievement.”

”Someone as outstanding as you must have received the Merlin Order Medal, right?”

Apparently not expecting this question, Riddle paused for a long time... until Kael grew impatient, new writing finally appeared on the paper.

[When I left this diary, I hadn’t...]

[But I believe if I wish, I can certainly achieve the Merlin Medal.]

Even with just text, Kael could feel Riddle’s confidence.

But it seemed he wasn’t wrong.
