My Goblin System : Levelling up with my SSS Class Devouring skill

Chapter 597: Chapter 597

What it was doing was additive.

Every other drain operating simultaneously was running against a mind that was already spending 8-12% more resource than its baseline on managing the nightmare pressure. The displacement calculations that should have cost X were costing 1.08X to 1.12X. The barrier maintenance that should have cost Y was costing 1.08Y to 1.12Y. The environmental decisions that should have taken a specific fraction of a second were taking a fraction of a second plus eight to twelve percent.

Over ninety minutes, the additive cost had accumulated.

His current displacement interval: 0.14 seconds longer than the fight’s start. From baseline plus nothing to baseline plus 0.14 seconds — the specific evidence of accumulated drain across four simultaneous operations plus the nightmare background.

Satou added the next element.

[OMNISCIENT NIGHTMARE VISION — PERFECT: SUSTAINED ANALYTICAL APPLICATION]

He’d been using this to read Chronus throughout the fight. He expanded the application — rather than periodic reading, continuous monitoring, the Omniscient Nightmare Vision running as a persistent parallel perception track that gave him real-time data on Chronus’s internal states.

Not the emotion-reading he’d used to surface the buried grief. The operational monitoring — the specific signs that experienced practitioners recognized in opponents managing multiple simultaneous applications, the micro-tells that Chronus’s precise control prevented from being visible externally but that existed in the internal state the vision could perceive.

He read the depletion rate directly.

Not modeled depletion from external observation. Actual internal state monitoring, the mana reserves’ current level and consumption rate visible in real time.

Forty-one percent of the accumulated reserve remaining. Consumption rate: approximately 1.4% per minute, three-drain plus fight plus nightmare. At current rate, reserve reaches zero in approximately twenty-nine minutes.

Twenty-nine minutes.

The working’s progression — four percent to independence threshold at the fractured mechanism’s slowed rate — approximately four hours. The reserve hitting zero in twenty-nine minutes.

The fight would end before the independence threshold.

Unless Chronus had something he hadn’t shown yet. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Which he did.

==========

At the ninety-minute mark, the first sign appeared that wasn’t a quantitative change but a qualitative one.

Chronus’s displacement found a position that was 0.3 degrees suboptimal relative to where his calculation would normally have placed him.

Not a miss. Not an error in the conventional sense. A degradation — the specific output variation that came from a cognitive system managing at the edge of its sustainable load, where the constant-precision output that had characterized the fight’s first phase was beginning to require more resources than the system could devote to it while maintaining everything else.

Satou saw it.

The 0.3 degrees created a window that hadn’t been available at any point in the fight’s first two phases.

[SHADOW ABSOLUTE MOVEMENT + ASSASSINATION ARTS — TECHNIQUE #203 — REGENERATION CASCADE FAILURE + VOID FANG]

He entered the window.

The shadow carried him to the position created by the 0.3-degree suboptimality — the specific location where Chronus’s barrier coverage was thinnest relative to his position, where the displacement had placed him 0.3 degrees toward a weaker coverage angle than his optimal position would have provided.

The technique targeted the junction where Chronus’s temporal power interfaced with his physical form’s maintenance — the cascade failure approach, overwhelming the maintenance at a specific point rather than attacking the whole system.

The Void Fang made the strike permanent in a way that normal damage wasn’t — what the existence erasure removed from the junction’s maintenance structure didn’t regenerate because it had been removed from the causal chain rather than damaged within it.

Chronus displaced immediately.

But from the suboptimal position.

His next position was also 0.3 degrees suboptimal — the cascade through the system, the initial degradation in displacement precision producing a degraded starting position for the next displacement, which would produce a marginally more degraded position for the one after.

A cascade.

Not rapid. Chronos was extraordinary — he was managing the cascade actively, identifying each suboptimality and compensating, the correction itself consuming the resources that the compensation was supposed to return.

But the trend was established.

Satou pressed the precision cascade with everything he had.

[PSYCHIC ANNIHILATION — LEGENDARY: MAXIMUM STREAM]

[ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE DOMINION — SOVEREIGN: EXPANDED FIELD]

[TERROR AURA — LEGENDARY: FULL ACTIVE]

[FEAR INCARNATE: MAINTAINED]

Four simultaneous mental pressure sources, amplified to maximum output, stacking against a mind that was already managing the precision cascade, the four operational drains, the fight’s physical demands.

Chronus’s displacement interval hit 0.21 seconds longer than baseline.

His barrier efficiency was at 84%.

His environmental applications had stopped.

The overlay had been dropped — he’d made the choice Satou had outlined, dropping the overlay to maintain the halt and the seal.

He was down to three drains plus the fight.

And the fight was consuming him faster than three drains alone would have.

”You’re forcing a cascade,” Chronus said. His voice was completely level. The specific levelness of someone whose discipline was so fundamental that it expressed itself even when everything else was running at deficit.

”Yes,” Satou said.

”The precision degradation feeds forward,” Chronus said. ”Each suboptimal displacement produces a marginally worse starting position for the next. Compounded across multiple cycles.”

Sean didn’t answer but he continued his attack at Chronos.

=========

At the two-hour-fifteen-minute mark, the balance tipped.

Not dramatically. Not the moment of decisive reversal that appeared in stories, where one action changed everything. The specific, gradual tipping of a balance that had been approaching for the past forty-five minutes — the accumulated effect of sustained drains, precision cascade, barrier efficiency reduction, and the ongoing nightmare applications reaching a threshold where Chronus’s output quality dropped below the level that had been making the fight even.

His displacement was now 0.23 seconds slower than baseline.

His barrier was at 81% efficiency.

His counter-attacks were landing consistently — but landing at 81% of the force they’d carried in the fight’s first phase.

Satou’s regeneration was handling everything.

Satou’s mana reserves, compared to what he’d started with, had reduced by approximately 3%.

The difference was mathematical and complete.

He started hitting more.

Not dramatically harder — the same abilities, the same combinations, the same approach logic. But Chronus’s precision in positioning the barrier coverage was degrading at a rate that was outpacing his compensation ability, creating windows in the coverage that hadn’t existed before and were becoming progressively larger.
