My Goblin System : Levelling up with my SSS Class Devouring skill

Chapter 580: Chapter 580 (Fixed)

Temporal aging required something to age in a specific way. What Satou carried inside him was too complex, too multi-layered in its nature, for the temporal field’s targeting mechanisms to find a clear point of application.

And the working recognized his presence. He could feel it — not Chronus’s awareness specifically, not yet, but the working’s own ambient sensitivity registering something anomalous inside its boundary, logging the inconsistency the way any system logged an input it didn’t have a processing pathway for.

He knows I’m here, Satou thought. The question is what he does about it.

He kept walking.

—---------------------

The eighty thousand people appeared as he moved deeper.

Not physically — not visible in any conventional sense. But present in the way the working’s architecture incorporated them, the way their suspended temporal signatures were woven into the seven-anchor structure as a load-bearing element rather than a consequence of it.

He felt them the way he felt the settlement sometimes, in certain moods on certain mornings — the specific pressure of a large number of living things present in the same space, each one carrying the particular signature of a being with history and particularity and the specific quality of continued existence. Individual people were not individually distinguishable — there were too many, compressed and suspended in a way that made the individual threads indistinct from any distance.

But the aggregate was unmistakable.

Eighty thousand people, alive, suspended in the temporal architecture of a working that intended to remove the entire region from the timeline.

Not killed. Not absorbed. Suspended — exactly as Freda’s theoretical analysis had suggested — in a state between present and absent, between the timeline they’d been pulled from and whatever the completed Severance would deposit them into.

Satou walked through this presence the way he’d walked through the held-breath forest.

He didn’t allow himself to think about what it meant too directly. He couldn’t afford the specific weight of eighty thousand individual lives in this moment — not because he didn’t feel it, but because feeling it fully right now would cost him something he needed for what was coming. He filed it as real, important, the reason for everything he was about to do, and kept it there rather than in the foreground of his attention.

The carved Fenryn figure was in his pack. The braided bundle of leaves and flowers.

He thought of the copper-furred child sleeping against his shoulder. Of Lyra’s hand in his at the gate. Of Jessica’s arms all the way around.

He kept walking.

—---

The first anchor structure appeared at eight hundred yards from the center.

It was larger than the textual description had prepared him for. Freda’s notes had described it as ”dark stone emerging from the earth in geometric arrangements” — accurate, but insufficiently communicating the scale. The anchor structure rose twelve feet above the forest floor, irregular in shape but specifically irregular, the specific shape of something designed rather than grown, dark stone that had the quality of being placed here rather than native to the region.

Around it, visible to his enhanced awareness in the same way the suspended population was visible, the temporal field concentration that made it an anchor — the dense knot of managed temporal energy that fixed this particular point of the working’s spatial boundary in place.

He could feel the mechanism of it.

Not the technical details — he wasn’t a temporal mage and the specifics of Chronus’s inscriptions on the stone’s surface were beyond his ability to read. But the function was clear the way a door was clear even if you didn’t understand the metallurgy of its hinges. This stone, at this position, was holding something in place. The field around it was anchored to it, the way a tent was anchored to a peg.

He didn’t stop.

This was Morgana’s target — northwest, which meant roughly two anchor positions around the ring from his current position. He was cutting through the ring from southeast, heading to the center.

He passed the first anchor at sixty yards — close enough to feel the field density peak and then decrease as he moved past, the topology of the anchor structure’s influence decaying with distance like any concentrated field.

The forest continued.

—----

The second anchor structure was half a mile from the center, northeast — Seraphina’s target. He couldn’t see it from his current trajectory but he felt it: another field concentration, another specific density in the ambient temporal environment, the second spoke of the seven-point wheel.

He wondered if Seraphina could feel it the same way he did. She had her own capabilities, her own sensitivity to magical environments developed across centuries of existing in the demon realm. Probably not identical to his — nothing was identical to what he’d become — but probably sufficient.

She was capable. He’d watched her work for weeks, since before the Grand Summons. She understood what she was doing and why and what the stakes were.

He kept north.

—---------

The third anchor was at roughly west, positioned to his left as he moved toward the center. Fourth at southwest. Fifth at south. He passed the field concentrations of each one as he moved — felt them the way he felt furniture in a dark room, not seeing but knowing, the spatial awareness that had developed alongside his other capabilities.

The sixth and seventh anchors were north and north-northwest — the two he’d be closest to as he approached the center from the southeast.

Six and seventh closest to Chronus.

Of course. The two anchors nearest the central mechanism would be the most directly defensible. If someone approached the center from any direction, the anchors nearest that approach would be the ones they’d pass through last, and last meant most protected.

Chronus had considered this.

Three months. Everything had been considered.

The sixth anchor appeared at four hundred yards from the center — larger than the southeastern ones, or perhaps more accurately at a different density, the field around it more concentrated. Not just an anchor but a fortification point, the two northernmost anchor structures carrying a second function as the working’s primary defensive perimeter.

Satou felt the field push at him as he entered the sixth anchor’s influence radius.

Push, specifically — not ambient field behavior, not the passive flowing-around that the general working field did. This was directed. Something in the sixth anchor’s structure was specifically tuned to register approaching presences and push back.

Not against him, as it turned out. The push dissipated on contact with whatever he was, the same way everything in the temporal environment dissipated — not deflected, just unable to find purchase on something its targeting mechanisms didn’t understand.

But the push itself was information.

The anchors can activate defensive functions, he noted. Chronus planned for someone reaching this far.

He walked through the sixth anchor’s field and came out the other side and the forest thinned ahead of him.

======

He saw it from three hundred yards.

Not the working’s architecture — that was felt rather than seen, the ambient temporal field so dense at this range that it had a visual quality, a shimmering in the air above the clearing that wasn’t heat haze and wasn’t optical distortion but was the specific visual artifact of temporal energy at operating concentration.

The clearing itself was large — the half-mile radius that Freda’s notes had estimated, give or take, an expanse of space among old-growth trees that had been cleared not by cutting but by the working itself, the temporal field concentration at the center creating conditions inhospitable to undergrowth and eventually to anything that required normal biological processes to function.

The seven anchor structures were visible from this approach angle — the two nearest to him on the north side of the ring, and beyond them, the central mechanism. Not a building, not a machine in any conventional sense. Something between a structure and a geological feature, dark stone emerging from the earth at the clearing’s center in a configuration that occupied perhaps sixty feet across, the specific complex geometry that Morgana had described from Ashvale — the geometry not of architecture but of inscription, of something written in three dimensions into the bones of the earth.

Above it, the temporal field was visible with the naked eye.

A distortion, slow and vast, moving in patterns that had nothing to do with natural atmospheric behavior — circular, organized, centered on the point at the clearing’s middle where the geometry rose highest. The air above it moving in the specific rhythm of something breathing, something sustained, something in the process of doing what it had been built to do.

Seventy to eighty percent complete.

He stood at the clearing’s edge and felt the full weight of what Chronus had spent three months building.

It was enormous. In the way that things built by beings who had existed for millennia and understood their craft at a level that no shorter-lived being could match were enormous — not dramatic enormity, not the thunderous enormity of something designed to impress. The quiet enormity of something that simply was what it was, fully, completely, built to specification by something old enough to know exactly what the specification required.
