Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 113: Chapter 105: A Good Deed

Tang Mo wasn’t trying to pry into other people’s business just to satisfy her own curiosity.

It was just that Lin Wan had trusted her with this, and she was well aware of Lin Wan’s condition.

Although it would take some time to heal completely, her Life was definitely not in danger.

So, if Zhou Jian’s intentions weren’t clear, she wasn’t about to just tell him everything.

Being abandoned again would be like wounding Lin Wan and her son for a second time.

”That was several years ago. Things were still peaceful then; the world wasn’t like this.

I was a soldier on a mission back then, out in the desert near B City, when I happened upon a girl on the brink of death. I gave her my water and food. She must have been very grateful, because while I was asleep...”

No matter how capable Tang Mo was, she was still a young woman. Zhou Jian spoke cryptically about the matter, but his meaning was clear enough.

”It was my fault, really. I didn’t control myself. After it happened, my mind was a real mess. Before I could figure out what to do, I got a call from my superiors about a mission, so I left in a rush.”

”I guess I chose to run away,” Zhou Jian said with utmost sincerity, not trying to shift the blame. His face was a mask of guilt.

”So it was just a one-night stand. You made your choice back then, so why go looking for her now?”

Tang Mo couldn’t understand why Zhou Jian was looking for the girl now.

”After I left, I could never get it out of my mind. We had spent time together. The two of us walked through the desert for two whole days and talked a lot. We really hit it off.

Even though the girl wasn’t beautiful, she had a heart of gold and a decisive personality. I should have taken responsibility for what happened back then.”

Zhou Jian hung his head, vexed with himself.

He was a very traditional man. He knew he shouldn’t have run away, no matter the reason.

’Plain-looking?’

Tang Mo pictured Lin Wan’s gentle, elegant face.

’Just how rebellious must Lin Wan have been back then? Tang Mo couldn’t even imagine what a mess she must have made of her face.’

”So, if you find her, are you prepared to take responsibility?” This was the crux of the conversation for Tang Mo. She needed to know Zhou Jian’s definitive stance.

”If she’s willing, I’ll marry her immediately.” The expression on Zhou Jian’s face was resolute.

”If she’s already married, then all I can do is wish her happiness. I suppose it would become my life’s greatest regret.”

Tang Mo nodded. ’He admits his mistakes and wants to correct them. At least he’s man enough for that.’

”Well, congratulations. Not only are you about to get a wife, but you’re also getting a son into the bargain.”

”A son? She got married, had a child, and then got divorced? It doesn’t matter. As long as she’s willing to marry me, I’ll raise the child as my own.”

Zhou Jian hesitated for a second, but his conviction remained unshaken.

Tang Mo shook her head. ”He’s yours. The boy is already three years old.”

”Huh? She... she was pregnant back then, and she gave birth to our child?”

Zhou Jian couldn’t believe it. ’If this is true, how on earth has she managed all these years? What a heartless bastard I’ve been.’

”Tang Mo, please tell me. Where are they? I swear I’ll spend the rest of my life treating that mother and son right,” Zhou Jian said, his voice laced with urgency.

”Do you like Mao Tou?”

Tang Mo answered with a question of her own.

”You mean...”

Zhou Jian was already an officer at S Base and had taken leave specifically to resolve this lingering regret, so he understood her hint immediately.

That kid, Mao Tou, was clever and cute. Looking closely, his features did bear a slight resemblance to his own. Of course, he adored him.

But Lin Wan...

The girl he remembered looked nothing like Lin Wan.

”Impossible. The girl I met in the desert was plain-looking, not even that pretty. There’s no way it could be Lin Wan.”

Zhou Jian shook his head.

”Well, you can ask her tomorrow and find out for yourself, can’t you?”

Tang Mo yawned, scooped up Jingjing, and headed back. She had done all she could; the rest was up to fate.

If not for her odd connection with Mao Tou, and the fact that she’d been moved by Lin Wan’s final act of self-sacrifice to save her, she really would have never bothered with such meddlesome business.

’I hope these two don’t let me down.’

After hearing Tang Mo’s words, Zhou Jian’s mind was racing, and he couldn’t calm down in the slightest.

He just stood there, anxiously waiting for dawn to break so he could go ask Lin Wan for the truth.

When Tang Mo woke up, she saw Zhou Jian already at Lin Wan’s side, helping change her bandages.

Lin Wan, her face flushed red, didn’t refuse. Mao Tou was sprawled across Zhou Jian’s lap, frowning as he supervised the work.

’What a happy little family,’ Tang Mo nodded in satisfaction.

After he finished with the bandages, Zhou Jian came to find Tang Mo again.

”There’s no need for thanks. Just treat the two of them well from now on.”

Tang Mo repaid favors, she didn’t need to be repaid in turn. She wasn’t one for endless gratitude.

”Okay, then I won’t.”

Zhou Jian wasn’t the type to be overly sentimental, either. Joy was practically spilling from his face.

”These are all the Crystal Cores I have on me. They’re all for you. If it’s not enough, I’ll pay you back when I get to S Base. I hope I can buy some medicine from you. I want Wan’er to get better quickly, without any lingering problems.”

”Calling her Wan’er so soon? Looks like she’s accepted you.”

’Good thing I’m not single,’ Tang Mo thought. ’I have Qin Ling. Otherwise, this would be...’

”She hasn’t accepted me, not really. After all, we didn’t know each other for long back then, and it’s been a long time. We agreed to get to know each other again, and I’ll marry her whenever she’s ready.”

All of Zhou Jian’s thoughts were now on Lin Wan.

What started as a matter of taking responsibility for a plain girl had turned into that girl becoming a goddess who came with his own biological son. Anyone in his shoes would feel like they’d hit the jackpot and would cherish it with all their might.

”Alright, I’ll take the Crystal Cores. You can leave Lin Wan’s recovery to me.”

Tang Mo accepted the Crystal Cores. From the looks of it, Zhou Jian was doing well for himself at S Base. ’She’d helped them out this much, so why not accept payment?’

’This is for the medical expenses.’

”Then thank you so much! If it’s not enough, please let me know. I’ll find a way to get you the rest!”

Zhou Jian thanked her profusely, then went over to Uncle He and spoke with him, his posture deferential.

That made sense. For years, Lin Wan had endured gossip while raising Mao Tou alone. Now that his father had shown up, Mao Tou would no longer be a child of unknown origin.

Uncle He had looked after Lin Wan and her son for a long time, so it was only right for Zhou Jian to explain the situation and express his gratitude.

Zhou Jian was a very thorough man.

Of the three superpower users, Lin Wan was the most seriously injured. However, thanks to the special treatment from Tang Mo’s ”private pharmacy,” she was recovering quite well.

She still couldn’t walk, but with Zhou Jian around now, it wasn’t a problem. Being carried the whole way would help them build their relationship, and Zhou Jian was more than happy to do it.

And so, the group prepared to set off once again.

But just as everyone had packed their things and was ready to leave, Uncle He came over to Tang Mo.
