I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 522 522: Everything is Wrong

Warrenʼs water orbs continued rotating, but his confidence in their effectiveness had evaporated entirely.

ʼMiraʼs wound would have killed her if she hadnʼt dodged at the absolute last moment. One casual slash from a standing position, and he nearly bisected an SS-rank fire mage in her Contractee State. The power differential is off the charts. Weʼre not fighting someone slightly stronger. Weʼre fighting someone operating on a completely different tier of capability.ʼ

His blue tattoos flowed faster, water responding to the spike in his internal stress despite his outward composure.

ʼThree hundred years of experience. Forty-two Soul Wardens eliminated. Countless high-level combatants were defeated through superior tactics and coordination. And none of it matters here. Alaric isnʼt just stronger. Heʼs so far beyond our capabilities that tactics become irrelevant. Itʼs like trying to defeat a natural disaster through clever positioning.ʼ

Warrenʼs gaze tracked to Mira, watching her struggle to stand despite the massive wound sheʼd sustained. Fire magic worked overtime to keep her conscious, but the damage was severe enough that her fighting effectiveness had dropped dramatically.

ʼWe need to retreat,ʼ Warren concluded. ʼCut our losses, abandon the mission, report back to the Council that Alaric Kaiser is operating without his normal restrictions and represents a threat level that requires multiple Council members to assemble.ʼ

But even as the thought formed, Warren knew retreat wasnʼt an option.

Theyʼd attacked Jack Kaiser.

Severed his hand.

Forced him to mutilate himself to survive Miraʼs technique.

Those actions had consequences that couldnʼt be negotiated away or diplomatically resolved.

Alaric wasnʼt here to talk.

He was here to kill them both, and the only question remaining was how long they could survive before that outcome became inevitable.

Warrenʼs water orbs began separating, each sphere breaking into hundreds of individual needles.

The projectiles formed in the air around him like a swarm of lethal insects, each one compressed to pressures that could punch through a steel plate.

Two thousand needles, all tracking toward Alaricʼs position with magical guidance.

The attack was launched in a coordinated volley, needles crossing the distance in less than a second.

The black blade became a blur, moving through space with speed that made it appear as multiple weapons striking simultaneously.

Each needle that came within range was intercepted mid-flight, cut cleanly in half by precision that transcended normal combat capability.

The sound was like hail striking stone, multiplied by thousands.

A percussion of destroyed projectiles that echoed across the courtyard.

Within three seconds, all two thousand needles lay scattered across wet marble, split perfectly down their centers, their magical guidance systems severed along with their physical forms.

Alaric covered his mouth with his free hand and yawned.

The gesture was deliberately insulting, a casual dismissal of Warrenʼs attack that pointed out he hadnʼt even needed to focus to defend against it.

”Come on,” Alaricʼs voice carried genuine disappointment. ”Youʼre the Council. The organization thatʼs hunted Soul Wardens for generations. At least make me use my magic, or this fight will be a bore.”

His purple eyes gleamed with dark amusement. ”Thereʼs no way you two are members with this pathetic display. Iʼve seen academy students put up better resistance.”

The taunt hung in the air like a slap across the face.

Warrenʼs jaw clenched, his blue tattoos flowing faster as his fury built up.

Mira came from the left, fire blazing around her enhanced form as she closed the distance with speed that left scorched footprints on wet stone.

Her hands burned with condensed heat, fingers extended like claws.

Warren attacked from the right, his water orbs reforming into different shapes.

Lances, whips, spheres of pressurized liquid that moved like serpents.

He layered attacks, creating crossfire patterns designed to eliminate escape routes and force Alaric into defensive positions where follow-up strikes could capitalize on his reduced mobility.

Geysers erupted beneath Alaricʼs feet, pressurized water shooting upward with enough force to shatter bone.

Water whips lashed from multiple directions, each one capable of cutting off a manʼs limbs.

Explosive orbs detonated in carefully timed sequences, creating shockwaves meant to disorient and destabilize.

Mira coordinated her assault with Warrenʼs rhythm, timing her fire attacks to exploit gaps in his water techniques.

Supernova Palm strikes aimed at vital points, heat condensed to microscopic precision. Flame waves that turned air itself into burning wind, creating zones where normal breathing became impossible.

The combined assault was devastating. Two SS-rank mages in Contractee states, their powers enhanced by three hundred percent, working together with coordination built from decades of partnership.

The black blade intercepted every attack. Water whips were severed mid-strike, their momentum redirected harmlessly aside.

Geysers were cut at their base, pressurized liquid collapsing back into puddles. Explosive orbs were pierced before detonation, their compressed mana dispersed through surgical precision.

Miraʼs fire attacks fared no better. Her Supernova Palm strikes were deflected by the bladeʼs edge, moving faster than her enhanced perception could properly track.

Flame waves were split down their centers, heat dispersing around Alaricʼs position without ever touching him.

He maintained his initial position, exhibiting no forward or backward movement. His footwork remained unchanged, save for subtle shifts in weight distribution.

He stood there, his sword executing defensive maneuvers while showing his sword mastery.

He exhibited no signs of exertion. His respiration remained steady, his demeanor composed, and his violet eyes followed the incoming assault with meticulous attention.

Miraʼs combat effectiveness was compromised by the severe pain from her substantial injury, despite her enhanced constitution and the application of fire magic maintaining her consciousness.

ʼNothingʼs working,ʼ her thoughts crashed through waves of agony. ʼEvery technique Warren and I have perfected over decades of partnership. Crossfire patterns that eliminated twenty Soul Wardens, coordination thatʼs killed entities far beyond normal human capability.... and Alaricʼs defending against all of it without moving from his original position.ʼ

She launched another Supernova Palm strike, fingers blazing with microscopic points of stellar heat.

The attack that had forced Jack to sever his own hand, the technique that killed through cellular desiccation.

Alaricʼs blade intercepted it casually, deflecting her hand away from his torso with minimal effort.

ʼHeʼs not even using magic,ʼ Mira realized, horror mixing with the pain radiating from her wound.

ʼThat yawn was insulting. Weʼre boring him. Two Council members in Contractee states, enhanced by Mythical Spirits, and we canʼt make him take us seriously enough to channel mana.ʼ

Her fire magic flared brighter, desperation fueling an increase in output despite her bodyʼs protests.

ʼThe intelligence was wrong. Catastrophically wrong. We thought political restrictions weakened Alaric, that his failure to protect Jack indicated he was not worth our time. But those restrictions werenʼt about power. They were about permission. Rules that prevented him from acting, not limitations on what he could do when those rules no longer applied.ʼ

Mira and Warrenʼs collaboration intensified, leading to a rapid, desperate series of attacks as they channeled their full efforts into a combined assault that would typically overwhelm any single adversary.

ʼAnd Jack,ʼ Miraʼs thoughts turned to the Soul Warden theyʼd been fighting minutes ago.

ʼIf this is what his father can do, what will Jack become when he reaches full maturity? We attacked someone whose bloodline operates on scales we fundamentally misunderstood. The Kaiser family isnʼt just powerful; itʼs also influential. Theyʼre beyond normal noble classification.ʼ
