I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 520 520: Failed as a Father and a Duke

Upon contact, an immense surge of power permeated Jackʼs consciousness.

This experience was not characterized by pain, but rather by its profound scope and intensity.

A torrent of mana, reminiscent of molten rock and volcanic force, inundated his system, seamlessly integrating with his pre-existing mana.

[Contract Established: Emberion (Ancient Magma Dragon)]

[Class: Emperor]

[New Skill Unlocked: Dual Element Manipulation]

[Fire Element: ACQUIRED]

[Current Elements: Lightning, Fire]

The notifications cascaded through Jackʼs vision, but his attention remained focused on the sensation of fire mana entering his body.

It settled near his heart, coiling around the organ like a planet orbiting the sun. Jack could feel it distinctly. It was separate from his lightning affinity, different in nature and behavior, but equally accessible.

Two sources of power circling his heart. Lightning and fire, both responding to his will.

Emberionʼs massive form began dissolving, breaking into particles of light and heat that flowed into Jackʼs body.

The dragon wasnʼt dying; he was transitioning, moving from physical manifestation into spiritual residence within his contractor.

Within seconds, the courtyard was empty of Emberionʼs presence. The magma dragon had vanished completely.

Then Jack heard the voice in his mind

ʼGet used to the mana before heading back,ʼ Emberionʼs tone was direct, lacking the warmth Tharaxis often showed. ʼYou have time to practice. Fire mana behaves differently from lightning. Itʼs less explosive and more persistent. Learn to control it before you return to kill those ants.ʼ

The dragonʼs voice carried a subtle arrogance, hints of the personality that had looked down on lesser creatures when serving Malakai.

ʼAnd understand this, Soul Warden. I donʼt serve you out of affection or loyalty. I serve because our contract benefits my goals. Donʼt mistake cooperation for friendship. Youʼre useful to me, nothing more.ʼ

Jackʼs lips curved into a slight smile despite Emberionʼs harsh tone.

The dragon was honest, at least.

No pretense of camaraderie or false warmth.

Just a direct acknowledgment that their relationship was transactional.

He could work with that.

Jack focused inward, feeling the two distinct sources of mana circling his heart.

Lightning on the right side of his body, fire on the left.

The division wasnʼt rigid, but the affinities seemed to prefer certain pathways.

He raised his right arm, the one still intact, and pulled on his lightning affinity.

Golden electricity erupted down his arm, covering his hand in crackling energy that made the air sizzle.

The familiar sensation of his primary element, controlled and directed through years of practice.

Jack released the lightning and shifted focus to his left side.

The sensation was strange. His left arm, the one ending in a cauterized stump, suddenly felt whole again.

Not physically, but magically, fire mana flowed down pathways that mimicked the lost limbʼs structure.

Flames erupted from the stump, not wild or uncontrolled, but shaped.

Forming fingers of fire, a palm of condensed heat, a hand made entirely from elemental energy.

Jack stared at the construct, fascination mingling with surprise at this development. He hadnʼt tried to make a hand.

The fire hand was solid enough to grip objects, hot enough to burn anything it touched, and completely under his conscious control.

It felt like his hand was still there. Phantom sensation turned real through magical manifestation.

Lorynʼs eyes widened as he witnessed the display, his ancient mind cataloging implications.

Renʼs star-bright gaze tracked the fire hand with calculating interest. Both recognized they were watching something unprecedented.

ʼThatʼs temporary,ʼ Emberionʼs voice cut through Jackʼs concentration. ʼIt only lasts as long as you channel mana to sustain it. Useful for combat, but it will drain your reserves if maintained too long. Donʼt mistake it for true regeneration.ʼ

ʼDonʼt mistake how much mana I have. And my regeneration is off the charts.ʼ

Jack nodded internally, understanding the limitation. The fire hand was a tool, not a replacement.

But for now, having a functional left hand, even one made of flames, was better than fighting one-handed.

ʼPractice,ʼ Emberion instructed, his tone carrying the authority of someone whoʼd trained countless beings.

ʼLearn how fire mana flows, how it responds to your intent. Lightning is explosive and precise. Fire is persistent and consuming. Theyʼre fundamentally different elements requiring different approaches.ʼ

Jack lowered both hands, dismissing the fire construct. The flame-hand dissipated immediately, leaving only the cauterized stump behind.

He took a breath, centering himself despite exhaustion and blood loss.

Two elements are now at his command.

Alaric slowly descended through purple-black clouds, drawing out the dread that wafted through the air.

The courtyard below waited in tense silence. Warren and Mira stood side by side in their Contractee states, fire and water unified despite opposing natures.

Rain had stopped entirely, frozen mid-fall by atmospheric pressure that made breathing difficult.

Rhys watched from the shadows beside Magnus, his winter-ice eyes tracking the descending figure with growing dread.

The sheer presence radiating from Alaric made his enhanced senses scream warnings about power operating on scales he couldnʼt comprehend.

Magnus remained perfectly still, and a slight smile played at the corners of his mouth.

Minutes passed. The descent continued at the same unhurried pace, as if Alaric had all the time in the world and saw no reason to rush judgment.

Finally, his boots touched the courtyard stone.

The impact was gentle, barely audible, yet the marble beneath his feet cracked in perfect radial patterns spreading outward like a spiderʼs web.

The stone itself recognized what stood upon it and fractured from the weight of concentrated power.

Fire erupted beneath her feet as she launched forward with explosive speed. Her fists blazed with concentrated heat, crimson hair streaming behind her like a banner of war.

The gap between them closed in half a second. Thirty feet covered in less than a second, a speed that would have overwhelmed most combatants through sheer velocity.

A simple backhand had caught Mira mid-charge across her face with force that turned her momentum against her.

The sound was like a thunderclap. Miraʼs body flew sideways, tumbling across wet stone before crashing into the shrineʼs foundation hard enough to crater marble.

Dust and debris exploded outward, ancient architecture fracturing from the impact.

She pushed herself upright immediately, keeping her consciousness despite damage that would have killed normal humans.

Blood ran from her nose and mouth, dripping onto stone that hissed from contact with her fire-enhanced body temperature.

But more than physical pain, shock registered in her orange eyes.

The blow hadnʼt just been powerful; it had been effortless.

Alaric hadnʼt braced himself, channeled mana, or even looked particularly interested in the action.

Just a casual backhand that sent an SS-rank mage flying like a child being disciplined.

”Youʼre weak,” Mira said, confusion mixing with anger in her voice. ”The intelligence reports said Jack ended up in a coma because you couldnʼt protect your own child. That you failed as a father and a warrior.”

She wiped blood from her mouth with the back of her hand, fire magic already working to heal internal damage. ”So how can you...”

Alaricʼs golden eyes fixed on her with intensity that made the words die in her throat.

”No one does anything in Elysium without my permission,” his voice carried across the destroyed courtyard like a judge reading a verdict. ”I am far from weak, girl. I had restrictions that made things harder for me. Constraints that prevented me from acting as I wished.”
