The Frail Guide Who Devoured an Entire Pollution Zone

Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Everything Is Under Control

Xu Ruming couldn’t help but tremble when she saw Shen Ling’an standing at the door with a dark expression.

Shen Ling’an hadn’t recovered from the kick he’d taken a few days ago, and as a result, he’d been venting his anger in other ways.

She was suffering terribly because of it, to the point where she was showing signs of a stress reaction.

But the plan was progressing smoothly, and Shen Ling’an’s status was about to rise. She didn’t dare defy him. All she could do was grit her teeth, endure the pain, and force a smile to please and cater to him.

And every time Shen Ling’an left, she would apply medicinal salves herself to prevent the accumulating injuries on her body from worsening.

But even so, many of the bruises were still obvious, especially the ones on exposed skin.

Not wanting anyone to see her injuries, she had finally found some peace and hadn’t shown her face for days.

The only reason she appeared on-site today was because she had been unwillingly brought there by others.

’The first step of the plan is complete,’ she thought. ’If all goes well, Shen Ling’an will soon be on equal footing with Lu Jingyu. I have to seize this opportunity so my own status will rise with his.’

Steeling herself, Xu Ruming put on another fawning expression, walked over to Shen Ling’an, and pressed herself against his chest.

”Brother Ling’an, did you come to celebrate with me? Our plan is going so smoothly, we should really do something. I...”

To please Shen Ling’an, Xu Ruming started to unbutton his clothes as she spoke.

”AH!”

But before she could finish her sentence, she let out a blood-curdling scream.

Shen Ling’an’s eyes glinted darkly as he grabbed her by the neck. In an instant, Xu Ruming’s face flushed red.

”Brother Ling’an, what are you doing? I can’t breathe.”

Forcing the words through her teeth, Xu Ruming’s face turned from red to purple.

She tried to grab Shen Ling’an’s hand, but she couldn’t muster an ounce of strength.

As if oblivious to her condition, Shen Ling’an didn’t lessen his grip. He snarled, ”I thought you weren’t leaving the house. Why did you show up there today?”

At that moment, Shen Ling’an was convinced that Xu Ruming had conspired with those people to set him up.

Xu Ruming opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

Seeing this, Shen Ling’an finally threw her aside.

Xu Ruming fell to the ground, her body aching all over, but she had no time to worry about it. She could only clutch her chest and cough violently.

After just a few breaths, Shen Ling’an grew impatient. ”Speak! You’d better give me a reasonable explanation, or don’t blame me for being merciless.”

’If Shen Ling’an could abandon Xu Qingsui back then, he can abandon me too.’

And seeing what he was capable of today, Xu Ruming knew he would do exactly as he threatened.

Not daring to cough anymore, Xu Ruming struggled to suppress her body’s discomfort and slowly began to speak. ”He sent someone to find me. They said the situation might change and told me to be on-site just in case.”

”Brother Ling’an, when I heard you might be in trouble, I couldn’t think about anything else. I immediately rushed over with the person who came for me. I never expected that by the time I arrived, you had already gone berserk.”

Shen Ling’an narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing Xu Ruming’s expression and demeanor as she spoke.

Based on his knowledge of Xu Ruming, he knew she wasn’t lying, though the last sentence was clearly added just to please him.

It was a trivial detail, and he couldn’t be bothered to call her out on it.

”If I had already gone berserk, then how was the Mutant dealt with?”

Although everyone claimed he had dealt with the Mutant, Shen Ling’an didn’t believe it.

He knew that most of the people cheering him on had been planted there, and they were the ones who had guided the other team members to put him on a pedestal.

It wasn’t strange that they would say anything to build his image, but he certainly wasn’t going to believe them.

A flicker of doubt crossed Xu Ruming’s face. She was increasingly confused about what Shen Ling’an meant.

But she didn’t dare hide anything now, so she told him everything she knew.

”When I arrived, you were in grave danger. His men were the ones who took action. On the way, I overheard them talking. It seemed they had something specifically for dealing with Mutants.”

”When we got to the scene, his men used the chaos to get close to you and the Mutant, and they were the ones who finished it off.”

Hearing Xu Ruming’s words, Shen Ling’an’s expression grew exceptionally dark.

’It’s obvious that my so-called mission was just one part of their larger plan.’

’Not only did they hide things from me, they even used my life as a gamble.’

Burning with rage, Shen Ling’an completely forgot that he owed his entry into the Heiyu Alliance to that man. His current elevated status was all part of that same man’s arrangement.

Without another glance at Xu Ruming, Shen Ling’an immediately left the base.

Upon arriving at his destination, Shen Ling’an didn’t wait to be announced and stormed directly into a rare, well-preserved villa in Zone 9.

His face grim, he knocked all the guards who tried to surround him to the ground.

He barged his way into the main hall, where the person he had come to see was already waiting for him.

”Young man, what’s with all the racket? Do you think you can just come and go as you please here?”

Qiu Fang faced Shen Ling’an with a smile, but his words were laced with a chilling coldness.

’Just a pawn I picked out myself,’ Qiu Fang thought. ’To dare to barge into my home... he must be tired of living.’

”Elder Qiu, do you really not know why I barged in here? Don’t you have something to explain to me?”

Qiu Fang’s eyes flickered. A pawn speaking to him like this... in the past, he would never have let it slide.

But the plan was already well underway and about to enter its most critical phase; he didn’t want any problems.

”Young man! Calm down! Everything I do is for the sake of our plan.”

”For the plan? So you just disregard whether I live or die? Aren’t you afraid that if I died, our plan would be completely finished?”

Qiu Fang sneered inwardly. ’Even if that did happen, all it would mean is a slight delay while I find a new pawn.’

’I’ve waited this long, after all. What’s a little more time?’

”How could that be! Of course I only began implementing the plan once I was absolutely certain of success.”

”I know you’re unhappy that I didn’t tell you in advance. But if I had told you everything, how could you have put on such a performance today?”

”You saw it yourself. The team members present today have already elevated you to the same level as Lu Jingyu. Would that have happened if you had only dealt with those first few Mutants?”

Shen Ling’an was speechless. It was true; he had dealt with the earlier Mutants far too easily. Even if it was effective, it definitely wouldn’t have provoked a reaction as strong as this.

Qiu Fang stepped forward and clapped Shen Ling’an on the shoulder. ”Relax, everything is under my control. You’ve already taken the first successful step. The next is to gradually consolidate the power Lu Jingyu holds. In the future, you will replace him and become the one and only captain of the Heiyu Alliance.”
