The Frail Guide Who Devoured an Entire Pollution Zone

Chapter 96: Chapter 96: One Thing Is One Thing

”Captain, there are just too many wounded. Our medical supplies aren’t nearly enough. If we don’t get a resupply, more than half of them could die, and some might even get infected.”

The person who had rushed out was He Sheng, the head of the infirmary. Looking at Lu Jingyu, a glimmer of hope appeared in his weary eyes.

Even though the number of casualties was overwhelming this time, Lu Jingyu had solved their urgent needs and brought medicine on several occasions, making him something of a godlike figure in He Sheng’s mind.

He always felt that as long as Lu Jingyu was around, there was no problem that couldn’t be solved.

But under He Sheng’s expectant gaze, Lu Jingyu’s expression was grim. For the first time, he didn’t immediately agree.

”Captain, even if you can only get enough medicine for a quarter of the wounded, that would be enough. I’m confident I can dilute it to treat everyone. They won’t recover as quickly as they would with a full dose, but just keeping more people alive is what matters right now.”

Seeing Lu Jingyu’s reaction, He Sheng knew his request was too difficult this time.

Before Lu Jingyu could speak, he proactively took a few steps back, compromising as much as he possibly could.

Looking at He Sheng’s anxious expression, Lu Jingyu patted his shoulder and forced a smile.

”We’ll do as you said. You use the Alliance’s reserve supplies to treat the wounded for now. I’ll figure out a way to get the rest of the medicine as soon as possible.”

Receiving Lu Jingyu’s answer, He Sheng finally breathed a sigh of relief.

”Captain, on behalf of the wounded, thank you.”

Lu Jingyu waved his hand, urging He Sheng to hurry back to his duties.

After He Sheng left, Lu Jingyu led Xu Qingsui and Meng Donghua into the infirmary.

They had barely taken two steps inside when they heard shouts from behind telling them to make way.

The three of them stepped aside as three stretchers in a row, each carrying a wounded person, were brought into the infirmary.

Their hearts grew heavy. As they walked deeper into the infirmary and saw the wounded with their varying degrees of injuries, it felt as if a great mountain was pressing down on them, making it hard to breathe.

Lu Jingyu suddenly stopped. He couldn’t bear to see any more of the tragic scene inside and immediately turned to walk back out.

Xu Qingsui said nothing and turned to follow him.

Meng Donghua only hesitated for a moment before chasing after them as well.

”Where are you going to get the medicine? The same way as before? Do you want me to come with you?”

Xu Qingsui already knew that Lu Jingyu had a way of procuring medicine.

With the appearance of Xie Qingling, she had vaguely guessed that Lu Jingyu must be getting the medicine from his family.

Lu Jingyu had been saying he needed her help with something, and it was most likely related to his family as well.

Right now, with so many lives at stake, she couldn’t worry about figuring out what she could do; she only wanted to give Lu Jingyu the push he needed.

Lu Jingyu glanced at her, and a rare trace of warmth appeared in his gloomy eyes.

”It’s too late to go back and gather the medicine. We have to find another way.”

Xu Qingsui’s brow furrowed. Medical supplies weren’t like other resources; they weren’t so easy to collect.

”Come with me. It’s a good chance to see what those people are really thinking.”

Tossing out that sentence, Lu Jingyu started walking toward the base exit.

Xu Qingsui didn’t quite understand the meaning behind his words, but she followed him without hesitation.

Watching the two of them leave one after the other, the ignored Meng Donghua looked awkward.

’Should I keep following them in this situation?’

But while Meng Donghua was still hesitating, the figures of Xu Qingsui and Lu Jingyu had already vanished from his sight.

At that, Meng Donghua sighed, taking it as a sign from the heavens that he wasn’t meant to follow.

He didn’t abandon the wounded, however. Instead, he turned back to the infirmary to help He Sheng.

Xu Qingsui didn’t know where Lu Jingyu was taking her, but she still followed resolutely behind him.

But just as they reached the base gate, a beautiful figure blocked their path.

When they got a clear look at the person, Xu Qingsui frowned along with Lu Jingyu.

’Is she really going to cause trouble at a time like this?’

’Has she completely given up on Lu Jingyu?’

Hiding the disgust in his eyes, Lu Jingyu clung to the last shred of their past connection and didn’t want to waste words on Xie Qingling.

He immediately tried to walk past Xie Qingling and leave.

But Xie Qingling took a step forward to block his path, then once again took out a locked case from her Space Ring.

Lu Jingyu was all too familiar with that case, and he finally stopped.

He didn’t speak immediately, just watched Xie Qingling, waiting for her to reveal her scheme.

But Xie Qingling suddenly made a move, nonchalantly shoving the case directly into Lu Jingyu’s hands.

”I’ve heard what happened. Now is when medicine is needed most. This is all the medicine I brought with me this time. Take it for the emergency.”

Normally, Lu Jingyu would never have accepted anything from Xie Qingling.

But at this moment, the locked case full of medicine felt exceptionally heavy in his hands, and he found he couldn’t let go.

After a moment of internal struggle, Lu Jingyu’s expression softened. ”I’ll consider this a loan. I’ll pay you back double later.”

Xie Qingling smiled, her eyes full of affection as she looked at Lu Jingyu. ”Just take it. You know I’ve never believed in drawing lines between us.”

A flicker of retreat crossed Lu Jingyu’s eyes, and it was clear he wanted to hand the case back.

As if she knew what he was about to do, Xie Qingling took several steps back, nipping his action in the bud.

Seeing that he couldn’t return it, and with so many team members waiting for this medicine, Lu Jingyu steeled himself. He put the medicine away and said firmly, ”I’m borrowing this from you. I will definitely pay it back.”

”Let’s be clear. Some things, once done, can’t be taken back. My decision is still final. There’s no need to waste any more words on it.”

Lu Jingyu cut her off before she could even get a word out.

Looking at Lu Jingyu, Xie Qingling gave a hollow laugh. Lu Jingyu ignored her completely, holding the case in one hand while beckoning for Xu Qingsui to leave with him with the other.

Just like that, Xie Qingling watched helplessly as Xu Qingsui and Lu Jingyu walked off together.

Only when their figures had completely vanished from sight did a trace of hatred appear in Xie Qingling’s eyes.

’What’s so great about some country bumpkin who can’t even be presented in high society?’

’Could it be that you’ve really fallen for her?’

Xie Qingling’s gaze tightened, her eyes fixed on the spot where Xu Qingsui had disappeared. The expression on her face gradually hardened.

”You just wait!”

Xu Qingsui sneezed a few times in a row. Just as she was wondering who was cursing her name, Lu Jingyu finally stopped walking.

”What’s wrong? When we get back, we should have He Sheng take a look at you!”

By this time, Lu Jingyu had already put the case Xie Qingling had shoved at him into his Storage Space.

He supported Xu Qingsui with a worried look, wishing he could just teleport her in front of He Sheng right this second.
