Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

Deep within the subterranean levels of the Research Center, the ambient hum of the facility’s heavy air scrubbers vibrated through the reinforced concrete walls, a steady rhythm that served as the heartbeat of the underground complex.

The air down on Sub-Level 3 was crisp, cool, and carried the sharp metallic scent of machine oil and wet granite. Lacking a dedicated indoor target gallery inside the Research Center, Han Zheng, Lin Qing, and Old Wang had requisitioned a wide, disused maintenance corridor to construct a makeshift firing range.

Song Yan stood near the far end of the hundred-yard corridor, his boots planted wide against the concrete floor as his hands raised in front of him. His eyes flickered with a faint, translucent aura as his Gravity Manipulation activated with a low, pressure-heavy hum. Two multi-ton, solid steel blast plates—salvaged from the previous day’s Block C cleanup—lifted smoothly into the air as if floating in zero gravity. With a precise motion of his hands, Song Yan guided the heavy plates into position against the dead-end stone wall, stacking them double-thick to form a heavy backstop.

Beside him, Xiao Li stepped up to the flanks of the range. With a deep grunting breath, he slammed his stone-armored palms against the exposed rock of the surrounding support pillars. Dull gray, mineral-hard layers of stone instantly spread across the structural beams, coating the perimeter in dense stone armor to ensure any stray kinetic ricochets would be absorbed safely without damaging the corridor’s load-bearing integrity.

”Range is secured, Commander,” Song Yan called back, stepping well behind the designated firing line and wiping a thin bead of sweat from his forehead.

Dr. Zhou rolled a heavy, padded transit case up to the workbench, unclipping the heavy iron latches with a series of sharp metallic snaps. She lifted the heavy lid to reveal five freshly assembled crimson-core rifle prototypes resting in foam inserts. Their custom receiver housings pulsed with a faint, contained red light, a subtle thermal glow radiating through the insulated casing.

Old Wang stepped up to the bench, his weathered, callus-covered hands reaching down to pick up the first prototype with practiced familiarity. He checked the weapon’s balance, lifting it to his shoulder before cycling the heavy bolt back to inspect the receiver housing. Inside, the regulated crimson stone sat snugly against the chamber, wired into a fine network of power conduits that Dr. Zhou and Lin Qing had spent hours calibrating.

”The core is fully stabilized,” Lin Qing explained, standing beside him with her arms crossed over her tactical chest rig. ”When you pull the trigger, the pin doesn’t just strike the primer of the bullet. It taps the crimson stone’s conduit at the exact microsecond of impact, superheating the kinetic round as it enters the rifling of the barrel. Treat the recoil like a high-caliber anti-material rifle.”

Old Wang nodded silently, his eyes narrowing as he settled his posture. He raised the weapon, resting the heavy barrel against a sandbag mount on the workbench, and aligned his optical sight directly with the center of the double-layered steel blast plate a hundred yards down the dark corridor. He exhaled slowly, letting his breath settle until his body was completely still, and then smoothly squeezed the trigger.

THOOM!

The discharge was not the sharp, crackling report of a standard firearm, but a deep, muffled roar that echoed thunderously down the narrow subterranean hallway, vibrating the loose dust off the ceiling pipes. Instead of a standard yellow muzzle flash, a blinding, razor-thin streak of crimson thermal energy cut through the air.

The superheated kinetic round struck the solid steel target plate in a split second. There was no metallic ping or loud clang of a bullet flattening against armor plating. Instead, the thermal burst upon impact instantly liquified a three-inch hole straight through both layers of reinforced steel, sending a blinding spray of molten, white-hot metal cascading across the concrete floor like liquid fire.

Old Wang slowly lowered the rifle, his jaw slightly slack as he stared down the sights at the glowing, slagged hole in the backstop. ”That didn’t just penetrate... it melted right through three inches of solid industrial steel. The mutant bone armor probably won’t stand a chance against this.”

Han Zheng walked forward, tapping a thermal diagnostic device against the side of the rifle’s receiver. He read the fluctuating digital figures on Dr. Zhou’s tablet. ”Recoil is manageable, and the heat dispersion along the barrel remains well within safe operational parameters. Dr. Zhou, Lin Qing, this is a massive breakthrough. With these weapons, our non-powered soilders and Depot recruits can punch straight through high-tier defenses without needing an awakening.”

As they finalized the diagnostic logs, footsteps echoed down the corridor stairs. Ye Lin stepped out into the bright LED overhead lights, dressed in a sleek, dark tactical suit with a heavy duffel bag slung securely over his shoulder. He glanced at the smoking, molten metal dripping from the blast plate, then turned his gaze toward Han Zheng and Lin Qing.

”The timing is perfect,” Ye Lin said smoothly, his quiet voice steady and resolute. ”I see the prototypes are combat-ready.”

Lin Qing picked up one of the fully assembled crimson rifles along with a sidearm and several specialized magazine pouches loaded with stabilized, heavy-grain rounds. She stepped over and handed the gear directly to Ye Lin. ”Customized receiver and full thermal charges. Keep the maintenance kit close—the core housing needs dry cleaning after every fifty rounds to clear out slag buildup.”

Dr. Zhou handed him a small, sealed medical kit from her kit bag. ”Energy-dampening salves and broad-spectrum antibiotics for the road.”

Ye Lin took the gear, securing the crimson rifle to the mounting clips on his harness. He looked at Han Zheng and Lin Qing, his expression softening slightly as he offered a rare, genuine nod of gratitude. ”Thank you. For the weapons, the supplies, and for helping me clear Block C’s records. I won’t stop until I pull my mother out of that facility.”

”Take the armored SUV in Staging Bay 2,” Han Zheng instructed, his deep voice carrying firm authority. ”It’s fully fueled, reinforced against heavy impact, and tracked on our internal radar grid until you clear the primary mountain pass.”

”Understood,” Ye Lin replied. He snapped a sharp, crisp military salute, turned on his heel, and walked briskly up the concrete corridor toward the upper vehicle bay.

---

Twenty minutes later, Han Zheng, Lin Qing, and the core leadership squad stood on the upper exterior observation deck as the heavy steel blast gates lifted just enough to clear the armored SUV’s high profile.

The dark, heavily plated vehicle roared to life, its heavy-duty treaded tires gripping the icy asphalt as it rolled out into the freezing mountain air. Ye Lin drove smoothly, navigating the narrow, snow-covered ridge road with calm precision before accelerating down the winding valley pass. Within minutes, the dark silhouette of the vehicle faded into the dense pine treeline, leaving only fresh tire tracks.

Lin Qing leaned against the railing, watching the distant trails left by the SUV until the vehicle was completely out of sight in the lower forest.

Before the blast gates could fully seal shut behind them, a sharp, high-pitched alarm echoed sharply across the courtyard speakers, followed immediately by the crackle of the comms system.

”Commander! Sister-in-law Lin! Get up to the command hub immediately!” Sun Hao’s voice cut through the channel, laced with sudden, intense urgency.

Han Zheng and Lin Qing exchanged a quick glance and turned instantly, taking the central lift straight up to the high-tech command deck. They stepped out onto the polished floor just as Sun Hao slammed his hand onto the main console, expanding a high-resolution orbital satellite radar map across the central primary screen.

A massive, pulsing crimson wave was blooming across the northern mountain sector—roughly fifteen miles out and moving south directly toward their valley corridor.

”Orbital thermal sensors just picked up a massive energy signature,” Sun Hao reported rapidly, his fingers flying across his keyboard to adjust the frequency filters and zoom in on the tracking grid. ”It’s not scattered, mindless walkers. It’s a dense, high-frequency cluster. They’re moving fast—far faster than any standard infected we’ve logged since the thaw started.”

Lin Qing stepped closer to the primary display, her sharp eyes scanning the telemetry and calculating the speed and trajectory of the incoming signatures. ”The thaw opened the northern pass. That’s the secondary mutated horde the prisoner warned us about. They aren’t right on top of us yet, but at their current movement rate, they’ll reach our outer perimeter choke points by nightfall.”

”They’re close enough to track, but far enough to prepare,” Han Zheng said coldly, his dark eyes reflecting the glowing red radar sweep on the monitor. He turned to Lieutenant Chen and the squad leaders standing behind them. ”Sound the general assembly. Activate all perimeter landmines, deploy the acoustic bait arrays along the lower ridge, and arm every guard on the walls with our new crimson-core rifles.”

The Research Center sprang into immediate, high-alert mobilization. Red warning lights flickered along the corridors, weapon racks were unlocked across all levels, and the fortified bunker prepared to face the heavy storm descending from the northern ridge.
