Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The cavernous mountain courtyard was a scene of controlled chaos and swift resolution. Heavy grey smoke from the breached outer gates drifted lazily into the air, carrying the sharp, metallic tang of melted iron, burnt gunpowder, and idle diesel exhaust from the Research Center’s heavy armored transports.

Ah Hua stood near a barricade, his comms humming with constant, low-frequency updates as the research center team finished disarming and securing the remaining facility guards.

”All clear on the perimeter, Han Zheng,” Ah Hua reported, his eyes scanning the high perimeter walls to ensure no hidden automated turrets remained active. ”The defense units have completely laid down their weapons and surrendered. The entire surface deck of the base is officially ours.”

”Good,” Han Zheng said, turning away from the primary transport truck where Director Chen had just been secured, bound tightly in heavy power-dampening restraints. ”Because we aren’t leaving empty-handed. We have over thirty freed captives to transport out of this mountain, and we’re going to need supplies, weapons, and extra wheels.”

Xiao Li spat onto the concrete floor, his slate-grey stone armor dissolving back into his natural skin as a broad grin broke across his face. ”Why leave their garage full of gear? They planned on locking us up in cold cages, taking their military arsenal is just collecting our overdue interest.”

Guided by Old Wang and Lin Qing, a large detachment of the freed captives joined Han Zheng’s team in sweeping the facility’s surface armory and underground vehicle bay.

They raided the supply racks methodically, loading dozens of military-grade weapons, tactical ballistic vests, rations, and crates of unspent ammunition onto the transport trucks. Down in the primary garage, Old Wang skillfully hotwired two additional heavy military supply trucks and an all-terrain scout jeep, significantly expanding their transport capacity so the liberated prisoners wouldn’t be crammed together like cattle during the long journey ahead.

With the expanded convoy fully loaded, armed, and prepped for high-speed travel, the massive iron-plated vehicles rumbled out through the shattered mountain gates, leaving the smoking, subterranean prison behind in a cloud of thick dust and diesel fumes.

An hour down the winding mountain highway, Ah Hua signaled a halt at a wide-open, neutral crossroads surrounded by dense pine forests and steep rocky cliffs. The trucks pulled over in a defensive, staggered formation, their heavy engines idling smoothly in the quiet mountain air.

Ah Hua hopped down from the lead scout vehicle, walking alongside Han Zheng, Lin Qing, and Xiao Li as they unlatched and opened the doors of the troop carriers. The freed captives peered out cautiously into the sunlight, their faces reflecting a complex mix of deep exhaustion, raw relief, and lingering psychological trauma from their weeks of confinement.

Han Zheng stepped up to the edge of the primary transport bed, his voice booming out clear, firm, and entirely devoid of pressure.

”Listen to me,” Han Zheng said, looking across the rows of silent survivors. ”You’re completely safe now. The subterranean facility is neutralized, and Director Chen is locked in our custody. We’re at a neutral crossroads outside their patrol grid, and we aren’t going to decide your lives or your futures for you. Tell us where you want to go, and we’ll drop you off wherever it’s safe.”

A heavy, emotional silence fell over the gathered captives. For weeks, every single second of their existence had been dictated by cold guards, sterile needles, and locked steel cages. Having total freedom of choice felt almost overwhelming and surreal.

Gradually, a middle-aged man with deep bruises around his wrists stepped forward toward the tailgate. ”There’s a neutral civilian border settlement about twenty miles east of here... my family might still be taking shelter there. Can you drop us near the outskirts?”

”We can,” Ah Hua answered cleanly. ”Our return route passes right along the eastern ridge. We’ll drop anyone off who wants to seek shelter in that sector.”

One by one, the majority of the former captives spoke up, finding their voices. Traumatized by their brutal medical experimentation and deeply terrified of being dragged into further conflicts between warring powered factions, almost all of them requested to be dropped off at neutral trading posts, rural border towns, or hidden civilian sanctuaries where they could attempt to rebuild their broken lives in peace. Han Zheng and Ah Hua nodded respectfully to each individual, agreeing to every single drop-off request without hesitation.

However, as the crowd began to settle back into their seats to prepare for the stops, three individuals remained standing firmly near the open rear doors of the transport.

The first was a tall, lean man in his late twenties with sharp, observant eyes and heavily calloused hands, wearing a grease-stained mechanical jumpsuit. The second was a quiet, athletic woman with short-cropped black hair, whose fingers occasionally flickered with faint, static-like residual energy—a specialized energy-tracking ability. The third was a stocky, scarred former mercenary scout who held himself with the rigid, balanced posture of a seasoned battlefield fighter.

The mechanic stepped out of the truck bed first, stepping directly in front of Han Zheng and Lin Qing, bowing his head deeply in a traditional gesture of respect. The energy-tracker and the scout followed him down to the asphalt, bowing in unison beside him.

”My name is Jiang Feng,” the mechanic said, his voice rough and raspy but filled with absolute sincerity. ”Before Director Chen’s retrieval squads dragged me into Block C, I was a certified armored transport mechanic for a local supply depot. I don’t have a home left to go back to—they burned my workshop to the ground when they captured me.”

The energy-tracker raised her head, looking at Han Zheng with cold, sharp determination. ”My name is Chen Yan. My energy-tracking power is the exact reason they locked me in the deep isolation cells—I can sense and trace active energy signatures from miles away. And this is Marcus, a former scout.”

Marcus gave a tight, respectful nod, his hand resting casually on his belt. ”We watched you break everyone out of that lower detention block. We watched you dismantle their defenses, take down their Director, stand up to their heavy armor, and offer us total freedom without asking for a single thing in return. Most of the people in these trucks are too traumatized and broken to keep fighting, and I don’t blame them one bit. But the three of us aren’t broken.”

Jiang Feng looked Han Zheng straight in the eye, his expression unwavering. ”We don’t want to hide in some vulnerable border settlement waiting for another facility squad or rogue faction to hunt us down like animals. We want to follow you. Let us join your squad. We’ll repair your vehicles, track your enemies’ energy trails, and fight by your side to repay the life debt we owe you.”

Xiao Li crossed his arms over his chest, a broad, satisfied grin breaking across his face as he nudged Han Zheng’s shoulder. ”Well, boss? We could definitely use a dedicated mechanic and a long-range tracker. Saves me from having to hammer out the dents in our trucks with my bare stone fists.”

Lin Qing evaluated the three standing before them before giving a subtle, approving nod. ”Their individual skill sets complement our core unit perfectly. And more importantly, their loyalty is genuine—earned through action, not forced through fear or contracts.”

Han Zheng looked at Jiang Feng, Chen Yan, and Marcus, sensing the steady, unyielding resolve in their personal energy signatures. He stepped forward and extended his hand, meeting Jiang Feng’s firm, calloused grip.

”Welcome to the team,” Han Zheng said quietly. ”Go grab some fresh tactical gear and sidearms from the armory truck. We’ve got a long road ahead.”

With the three new allies officially integrated into their unit structure, the convoy mounted up once more and pulled onto the highway. Over the next two hours, Ah Hua expertly navigated the mountain road network, making smooth, secure drop-offs at every requested civilian outpost and neutral border settlement. The departing captives tearfully thanked Han Zheng, Lin Qing, Xiao Li, and Old Wang, vanishing safely into the settlements to start anew.

By late afternoon, the remaining convoy—now carrying Han Zheng’s expanded squad, several truckloads of stolen military gear, and the locked-down Director Chen—turned onto the main highway leading directly toward familiar territory.

Sitting in the passenger seat of the lead scout jeep, Han Zheng adjusted his radio interface, looking back through the side mirror at the heavy armored transport holding Director Chen in its secure bay.

”Ah Hua,” Han Zheng called over the encrypted comms channel. ”How are things looking back at our main destination?”

Ah Hua’s voice crackled back through the radio speaker, completely relaxed and brimming with confidence. ”Captain Lu Feng and the Depot crew have already been notified of our success. They’ve secured the entire Research Center perimeter, raised the defense grids, and prepped a high-security containment cell specifically for our new ’guest.’ Once we roll through those front gates with Director Chen in chains and trucks overflowing with high-grade military hardware, everyone is going to lose their minds.”

Han Zheng leaned back against the headrest, staring out at the passing landscape as the familiar outer watchtowers of the Research Center finally appeared on the distant horizon. They had survived the subterranean facility, captured its commander, liberated dozens of lives, and gained powerful new allies—but as Ye Lin’s parting warning echoed in his mind, Han Zheng knew this victory was merely the opening move in a much larger conflict.
