Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

The lower service corridors of the Research Center were an endless labyrinth of reinforced concrete and shadow, smelling perpetually of damp earth, spilled diesel exhaust, and cold machine grease.

It was an industrial underbelly that the base’s adult personnel navigated with hurried, purposeful strides—too consumed by supply logistics, guard rotations, and structural repair duties to pay any attention to the small shape drifting quietly along the perimeter wall.

Han Ye walked with his small hands buried deep in the pockets of his jacket, his boots moving without making a single sound against the uneven floor.

To any soldier glancing down from an overhead catwalk, he appeared to be nothing more than a quiet, harmless five-year-old wandering mindlessly through the base to pass the time.

But beneath his small frame, the shadow cast by the dim utility lights stretched unnaturally along the bottom of the concrete wall—darker, thicker, and subtly shifting independent of his physical movements.

A paper-thin veil of living darkness coiled around his small body, actively distorting the ambient light around his silhouette. If a guard looked directly down the corridor, their eyes would naturally glide right past him, mistaking his small figure for a pile of discarded tarps or a patch of shade cast by the heavy support pillars.

It was an elementary application of his shadow manipulation, but it made him practically invisible.

Han Ye paused in the recess of a massive steel load-bearing beam just outside the main staging bay of the motor pool. Pulling a ballpoint pen from his coat pocket, he absentmindedly clicked the spring with his thumb, listening intently to the soilders and armed guards shouting over the heavy, rhythmic thrum of idling diesel engines.

”...Command Hub wants all three heavy transport trucks prepped,” Someone yelled from beneath the SUV, wiping black grease onto a tattered rag. ”What’s the sudden rush? We just brought in the Commander’s convoy hours ago. The men haven’t even finished unloading the secondary cargo from the facility.”

”Word from the top is that Director Chen’s facility isn’t an isolated cell,” a guard replied, leaning his back against a stack of oversized off-road tires. ”Commander Han locked that Director Chen down in low levels for high-priority interrogation. Turns out that facility was just one node in a multi-facility network spread across the entire province. Commander wants the supply depot cleared before whatever else is out there realizes Director Chen’s offline.”

Han Ye’s thumb froze against the plastic clicker of the pen.

The Network.

Hearing the informal confirmation from the guards caused a cold, familiar knot to tighten deep within his chest. In his previous life, before time folded back on itself and trapped his consciousness inside this small body, those multi-facility networks had been an absolute, unmitigated nightmare.

They were like cockroaches beneath the floorboards. In the early apocalyptic collapse, nobody paid much attention to them. Surviving factions were too busy fleeing infected swarms, securing clean water, or fighting over canned rations to notice these facilities quietly locking their doors.

But beneath the surface of the ruined cities, these facilities grew silently, spreading their root systems like a fast-moving cancer. By the time the major survivor warlords realized what was happening, the network had already established dozens of heavily fortified nodes, systematically hunting down high-grade power users, trapping them like wild game, and draining their biological energy cells to power dark, monstrous experiments.

In his past life, Han Ye had almost been caught by their specialized retrieval squads twice. They didn’t fight like normal wasteland bandits or rogue military remnants; they operated with terrifying, mechanical coordination, utilizing specialized energy-dampening fields and suppression weaponry designed specifically to neutralize power users. They hunted with an eerie, emotionless efficiency, tracking energy signatures across vast distances until their target collapsed from exhaustion.

He clearly remembered a night years into his previous life, sitting across a ruined campfire with Su Xiao.

They had been bitter, sworn enemies back then—two deadly, high-ranking power users who would just as soon slit each other’s throats over a territorial dispute. But when the topic of the facility network came up, even Su Xiao’s dark, arrogant demeanor had turned deathly serious. They had shared a bottle of scavenged liquor in tense, guarded silence and agreed on one singular, non-negotiable truth: the facilities were a plague, and every single one had to be eradicated down to the ash.

Han Ye clicked his pen once, the quiet metallic sound swallowed by the roar of the idling truck engines. His small face darkened into an expression far too cold, calculating, and ruthless for a five-year-old child.

In his past life, he had never managed to uncover the true identity of the mysterious bigshot who commanded the network from the apex.

The top leader was a phantom, operating entirely through regional proxies like Director Chen while keeping the central headquarters completely invisible off the grid. By the time the apocalypse reached its third year, that shadowy mastermind had built a corporate empire on blood and harvested power, turning the network into an unkillable juggernaut that spanned multiple provinces and controlled vast arrays of resources.

’Right now, though... it’s different’, Han Ye thought, his sharp eyes narrowing as he watched a guard tighten the suspension bolts on a heavy armored transport.

Right now, the timeline was still in its infancy. We are still in the opening months of the apocalypse. The network hasn’t fully consolidated its power yet.

Capturing Director Chen was a massive victory for the Research Center, but it was also a massive, ticking time bomb. If Han Zheng and the rest of the leadership didn’t handle this with absolute perfection, the central hub would realize that one of their facilities had gone dark and trigger their automatic containment and purge protocols. They would send specialized extermination units to erase every trace of evidence—and slaughter everyone holding it.

Han Ye leaned his head back against the cold concrete pillar, his small fingers tightening around the pen until his knuckles turned pale. He knew how the network operated in its early stages.

He remembered their secondary communication protocols, their encrypted emergency frequency bands, and the standard layout of their regional relay stations from the classified documents he had raided in his past life. He knew the exact ambush patterns their retrieval squads used when a regional director went radio silent, and he knew how they exploited local blind spots to launch surprise night raids.

The core problem was his current body.

If he walked straight up to Han Zheng or Lin Qing right now and laid out a complete breakdown of the Network’s regional communications, they wouldn’t just be shocked.

In a world rapidly filling with strange mutations and unknown abilities, acting like a fully trained strategist inside a five-year-old’s body would make him look like a threat, an impostor, or a rogue power user possessing a child. Even if they accepted his explanation, there was no gurantee that others would do the same.

He could have even confided in Lin Qing before, but she had lost her memories.

He couldn’t risk scaring them, nor could he afford to expose his status as a regressor just yet.

’I have to feed them the information indirectly’, Han Ye decided, pulling his shadow tighter around his boots as an armed patrol walked past his pillar. ’Father is definitely going to break Director Chen sooner or later. I just need to make sure that when he searches Director Chen’s confiscated personal items or reviews the evidence, he finds the clues.’

Han Ye reached deep into his jacket pocket, feeling a small, crumpled scrap of paper. Pulling it out discreetly, he smoothed it against his knee. Using his pen, he began carefully tracing a set of frequency coordinates and regional grid markers purely from memory—the exact secondary relay frequency the Network utilized during the first year of the collapse to coordinate backup supply lines.

If he could use his shadow to stealthily slip this scrap of paper into the supply bought back from the facility, make it seem like something that they had accidentally managed to bring back. It would give the Research Center the exact location of the network’s secondary outpost without forcing Han Ye to utter a single word.

A faint, cold smirk touched the corner of Han Ye’s lips as he capped the pen and slipped it back into his pocket.

The facilities had been untouchable, monstrous giants in his past life that hunted power users like livestock. But in this life, with Han Zheng’s formidable military discipline, Lin Qing’s lethal capability, and his own future knowledge operating quietly from the dark, these cockroaches were going to be crushed beneath their boots before they ever got the chance to grow.

Straightening his small jacket, Han Ye stepped away from the support pillar. His shadow detached from the concrete wall, flowing smoothly back beneath his soles as he walked casually out of the motor pool, looking like nothing more than a quiet child heading back up to his room before dinner.
