Apocalypse Villainess? Nah, I'm Nice

”The fighting over at Harborcrest Base is still ongoing. The zombies this time are supposedly very tough, with a high number of mutated ones. The Southern Army has suffered considerable losses. However, they’ve dug in and established a defensive line, so they’re likely preparing for a protracted war. At the moment, a zombie breakthrough seems unlikely. Central City has no intention of sending reinforcements for now. Although Maisie Joyce has The Power Corps at her command, its Second Division is problematic and doesn’t fully obey her. She’s probably worried about stretching herself too thin and achieving nothing. For now, she’s concentrating on resolving the turmoil within the city.”

”A few days ago, Base Commander Chapman accepted Maisie Joyce’s invitation and moved into The Citadel. He said that Maisie Joyce is someone worth allying with. She’s a better City Lord than Leo Joyce, and helping her out at a time like this certainly won’t be a losing proposition.”

”...”

After listening to the report, Marcus Monroe turned and relayed it to Paige Summers.

Then, with a wry smile, he said, ”He said the same thing as you. You two truly are good partners.”

Paige Summers’s mind raced. She tilted her head and said, ”You’re not jealous, are you?”

Marcus Monroe’s gaze wavered for an instant, but he replied with an air of stern righteousness, ”Don’t be ridiculous! I’m simply moved that you have such a good friend!”

’The fact that Claire Chapman used to be interested in Paige Summers? As if he’d ever bring that up!’

’Not a chance!’

’Even if he’s not a love rival now, there’s nothing wrong with staying on guard!’

Paige Summers smiled, choosing not to expose his little act.

’She knew that neither she nor Claire Chapman had ever felt that way about each other, but it was still fun to make Marcus a little nervous now and then!’

With the reconstruction plans settled, Marcus Monroe quickly got to work.

This was a project that would require the efforts of the entire base, so everyone was soon bustling with activity.

Most people had to participate in the demolition and construction.

Those with superpowers used their powers, and those without used their strength.

Everyone who worked received wages, paid for by the base.

Neither Marcus Monroe nor Paige Summers were stingy, so the team members under them had no complaints.

This was especially true for the newcomers. At their old bases, ordinary people and low-level superpower users were lucky just to have enough to eat and stay warm; they never had any breathing room. But things were different now.

Although they still had to pay for food and drink, there was always paid work available in the base, and the compensation was much better. Not to mention, the food here—flour and vegetables—was something they thought they would never have the chance to eat again in their lives.

As a result, every one of them was filled with drive, worried that their work wouldn’t satisfy their superiors. Whether they were constructing houses or digging fortifications for the base, they worked with more dedication than if they were building for themselves!

The base was bustling with feverish activity.

Watching them, Paige Summers felt happy as well.

In less than two months, the vast majority of the base’s reconstruction work was completed. All that remained were some finishing touches.

At this point, Bloodfall Base was truly transformed!

The districts were all neatly arranged with wide roads. Although the place wasn’t particularly large, it had everything one could possibly need.

It wasn’t just their own people who thought it was great; even visitors from other bases who came to trade had nothing but praise. The trading district now had dedicated shops where they could purchase weapons and grain. Samples of each item were on display, and if they saw something they liked, a deal could be struck quickly after settling on a price and quantity. Afterward, there was no need to rush off. The entertainment and lodging district had places to drink tea and places to drink alcohol. Though the prices were steep, these were rare luxuries, and visitors felt compelled to go in and spend some money, even if just for the experience.

Speaking of the appearance of tea and alcohol, that was all thanks to Sean Raines.

He was the one who provided the tea tree seeds and the methods for processing tea and brewing alcohol, which were then brought to fruition using Paige Summers’s Planting Space.

Additionally, because Paige Summers helped him grow a large quantity of medicinal herbs, he and Levi Young not only covered all the base’s medicinal needs but also produced a surplus to sell in the trading district.

The results were surprisingly good, and demand far outstripped supply.

Essentially, every batch of medicine sold out as soon as a new group of traders arrived, and some even wanted to place pre-orders.

Sean Raines and Levi Young took thirty percent of the money from the medicine sales, while the remaining seventy percent went to the base.

When all was said and done, the earnings were no less than what they made from selling grain!

Paige Summers couldn’t help but exclaim with feeling, ”There’s an old saying that selling medicine is more profitable than being a highway robber, and it’s absolutely true! The prices for medicine here are even higher than in Central City. This is a real windfall!”

Marcus Monroe just smiled without saying a word.

’It’s been true since ancient times. The more difficult the transport, the higher the prices. Besides, medicine is a life-saving commodity; of course it can’t be compared to other goods.’

With the base’s reconstruction complete and Paige Summers now past her first trimester, Marcus Monroe finally held their wedding. Although it was combined with the celebratory ceremony for the new base, deep in his heart, a piece of him finally settled into place.
