Reborn in Football to Build Top Clubs from English League Two

82: Gigg Lane’s Final Battle HornThe Gigg Lane pitch was like a powder keg, ready to ignite.

The referee’s whistle was the fuse.

Bury’s players charged forward like a pack of bulls released from their cages, eyes red, full of raw power.

Every collision, every tackle, carried a fierce intensity, a ’either you fall, or I fall’ mentality.

This was the primal instinct of beasts fighting for survival in League Two.

The midfield instantly transformed into a meat grinder.

Grass and dirt, kicked up by tackles, swirled wildly in the air.

But Hartlepool’s players were not intimidated by this aggressive surge.

Their eyes were like ice.

They remembered that cursed rain in Grimsby.

They remembered the suffocating silence in the locker room.

Every word from Lin Feng was branded deep into their bones, like a searing mark.

No rush.

No panic.

They were here for revenge.

Jordan Henderson, in midfield, was like a tireless diesel engine, constantly running across the pitch.

He made no superfluous movements; he received the ball, looked up, observed, and immediately passed it to the teammate in the best position.

No fancy footwork.

No showy tricks.

Every pass he made was as precise as if measured with a ruler, delivered steadily to its target.

Every slide tackle he made carried the sound of wind, fierce but clean.

He used his body to tell his opponents: this is a battlefield, not a catwalk.

Bury’s fierce attacking momentum was repeatedly stopped dead in the midfield by him, like a nail hammered firmly into place.

Once, Bury’s central midfielder, Simon Whaley, was knocked down by him and got up to hurl insults at him.

”You damn hillbilly, what can you do besides foul?”

Henderson merely gave him a cold glance, spat, then turned and ran off, responding to everything with his actions.

Young Chris Smalling stood beside Captain Nelson, like rapidly solidifying concrete.

He no longer hesitated.

He no longer relied on his elder brother to cover for him.

Bury’s striker, Matthew Taylor, a seasoned veteran who had played in League Two for many years, tried several times to outmaneuver the rookie with his experience and speed.

The first time, Taylor tried to fake him out, but Smalling stood still, like a statue.

The second time, Taylor tried to break through with speed, but Smalling simply used his shoulder to bump him, causing him to lose balance.

The third time, Taylor tried to turn sharply, but Smalling simply extended a leg, like an iron clamp, cleanly intercepting the ball and then passing it to Henderson.

There was no expression on his face, but his eyes held a domineering intensity, as if to say, ”This is my territory; you shall not pass.”

Old John stood on the sidelines, hands in his pockets, as steady as a mountain.

He even felt the chewing gum in his mouth had more chew than usual.

He knew this team was different now.

That defeat had forged true steel.

”Bury is playing very aggressively today,” the Sky Sports commentator analyzed.

”They clearly don’t want to give up easily at home. Hartlepool United, on the other hand, seems more patient; they are waiting for their opportunity. The key to this match is who can break the deadlock first.”

Twenty minutes into the match, Hartlepool United, like a compressed spring, began to release its energy.

Gylfi Sigurðsson started to roam between the center and the wings; he was like a ghost, you never knew where he would appear next.

He and Snodgrass executed several lightning-fast one-two passes, like two sharp daggers, repeatedly tearing at Bury’s defense.

But Bury’s defense was packed tightly, like an iron barrel.

Sigurðsson found an opening outside the box and unleashed a powerful shot.

The ball whistled as it flew towards the top corner of the goal, and the opposing goalkeeper, Alan Fettis, made an extreme diving save, his fingertips barely tipping the ball over the byline.

The corner kick was taken.

Captain Nelson, like a soaring lion in the penalty area, leaped high, overpowering two opposing defenders, and delivered a powerful header!

The ball was blocked on the goal line by Fettis’s body!

Opportunities came one after another, and one after another they slipped away.

The away fans in the stands began to grow anxious, their chants tinged with a slight tremor.

In the thirty-eighth minute, the opportunity finally arrived.

It wasn’t created; it was seized.

Bury’s midfielder, Dwayne Mattis, made a careless horizontal pass, which Mark Tinkler anticipated!

Tinkler, like a leopard, burst out from the side, dispossessing the ball with a fierce but clean slide tackle.

He didn’t even look up; purely by the muscle memory developed over the season, he swung his right foot and delivered a precise, defense-splitting over-the-top long pass!

The ball, like a precision-guided missile, flew over Bury’s entire backline, landing in the deadly open space in front of the penalty area.

A black flash streaked past Bury’s center-back, Paul Scott!

It was Jamie Vardy!

The explosive power of his acceleration was terrifying!

Scott felt only a gust of wind as Vardy passed him; he desperately reached out to grab him but only caught air.

When he turned again, Vardy was already two body lengths ahead of him, like an unbridled wild horse, charging towards Bury’s goal!

One-on-one!

Time in the entire stadium seemed to slow down at this moment.

Vardy dribbled the ball, one step, two steps, charging into the penalty area; only the desperately advancing goalkeeper, Alan Fettis, remained in front of him.

Fettis spread his arms wide, like a great roc, trying to block all angles.

The coolness in Vardy’s eyes made everyone’s heart skip a beat.

He didn’t choose a powerful shot, nor did he try to dribble past.

At the moment he neared the goalkeeper, the instep of his right foot, like a lover’s caress, gently pushed the ball.

The ball skimmed the grass with a slight spin, rolled under Fettis’s armpit, and, as if it had eyes, nestled into the far corner of the goal.

One-nil!

Goal!

Gigg Lane instantly plunged into two extremes.

The home fans’ cheers abruptly ceased, as if someone had choked them.

Meanwhile, the away stand, like a volcano silent for a century, erupted with a roar!

Thousands of Hartlepool United fans leaped from their seats, waving their blue and white scarves, embracing each other, and shouting at the top of their lungs!

The dawn of the championship was no longer just a dawn, but the midday sun, shining on each of their faces!

Vardy didn’t slide on his knees towards the corner flag as usual; he simply raised his hands high, pointed to the badge on his chest, and then pointed towards the away stand.

There was no ecstasy on his face, only the calm and determination of a mission accomplished.

He was telling everyone in this way: this is just the beginning.

His teammates swarmed him, surrounding him, vigorously patting his back, and shouting his name.

Smalling and Henderson also ran over, hugging Vardy tightly, their eyes filled with the purest admiration.

This goal, like a key, completely unlocked the team’s long-suppressed fighting spirit.

Bury’s players, on the other hand, stood rooted to the spot, their spines seemingly removed, their eyes vacant.

Their coach stomped his feet in anger on the sidelines, shouting at the field, but the players merely stared blankly at Hartlepool United’s celebration; the ferocity they had shown at the start was completely gone.

The halftime whistle blew, and Hartlepool United led by one goal thanks to Vardy’s crucial strike.

The players walked off the field, their faces showing no excessive excitement, only a sense of solid satisfaction from having their destiny back in their own hands.

In the locker room, Lin Feng’s voice came through Old John’s phone, clear and strong.

”Well done. In the second half, stay focused, stay patient, control the rhythm, and slowly wear down their physical strength.”

Old John hung up the phone and looked at the players; his voice was not loud, but everyone heard it clearly.

”The boss said, hold steady! We are only forty-five minutes away from the championship!”

The players looked at each other and nodded heavily.

They knew what to do.
