Reborn in Football to Build Top Clubs from English League Two

55: Heading to WembleyThat stirring 3-4 defeat, though a loss, did not bring discouragement; instead, it acted like an intense tempering process.

It stripped away the last vestiges of greenness from these young players, imbuing them with the taste of iron and blood.

They walked onto the training ground with steps more stable than ever before, their eyes holding an imperceptible sharpness.

Inside the bright tactical analysis room at the Phoenix Training Center, the faint hum of the projector mingled with the sound of raindrops tapping against the window.

The players sat upright, their backs straight.

The despondency of a few days prior was gone from their eyes, replaced by a settled determination.

They were no longer League Two players content with just a draw; deep within their hearts, the seed of challenging a higher stage had been planted.

Lin Feng stood before the projection screen, which showed a still image of Schmeichel kneeling on the ground after Henry scored the winning goal.

That young face was filled with unwillingness and regret. Lin Feng did not play the video; he simply looked calmly at his players.

“We lost,” he said, his voice not loud, yet it made the entire room silent enough to hear a pin drop.

Vardy’s fists involuntarily clenched, Sigurðsson adjusted his breathing, and every player held their breath.

“We lost due to stamina, due to experience, due to our inability to seize key opportunities. This is the real gap between us and a top Premier League team; you’ve all seen it clearly.”

He paused, then stated, “But you also made Wenger and his Arsenal fight until the very last minute at Victoria Park.”

“From today onwards, no one in English football will dare to underestimate Hartlepool United.”

Every word from Lin Feng was like a heavy hammer striking the players’ hearts.

They knew that the boss saw not just the result, but also their all-out effort and the distance they needed to bridge in the future.

The sense of honor from being recognized by a strong team flowed within them, but deeper still was a clear recognition of their own shortcomings.

This direct confrontation with a powerhouse was an invaluable baptism for these young prodigies.

Jamie Vardy, in his battles with Kolo Touré and William Gallas, gained a deeper understanding of top center-backs’ defensive intelligence and physical confrontation.

He now seized timing more ferociously in training, each change of direction carrying the determination to tear apart the defense.

In one internal scrimmage, he even used a nimble turn to make Smalling stumble, then grinned triumphantly at his teammates.

Kasper Schmeichel’s confidence soared after saving shots from Henry and Van Persie.

He began to more actively command the defense in training matches, his shouts growing louder, so much so that even old captain Nelson would occasionally shake his head helplessly, though his eyes held approval.

Gylfi Sigurðsson, in his direct matchup with Fabregas, experienced the rhythm control and passing vision of a world-class central midfielder.

This ignited a stronger desire to win in him; he doubled the number of extra long-range shooting drills after training, and the ball repeatedly found the top corner of the net with a dull thud echoing across the empty training ground.

News from the tabloids also confirmed this.

It was rumored that Arsène Wenger, after the match, privately asked his scouting team for more detailed information on Gylfi Sigurðsson and Jamie Vardy.

This rumor spread quickly among the players, causing a small stir.

Lin Feng, hearing this, simply nodded calmly, further strengthening his resolve to offer these prodigies new contracts with higher release clauses in the summer.

He knew it was time to build a sturdier protective shell for these uncut gems.

The League Cup journey had ended, but Hartlepool United’s season was still ongoing.

Inspired by Lin Feng, the team quickly shifted its focus to the next match: an FA Cup Fourth Round home game against Championship side Ipswich Town.

Hartlepool United won this match cleanly and decisively.

The Victoria Park pitch was somewhat slippery under the winter sun, but this did not affect the players’ performance in the slightest.

In the first half, Robert Snodgrass used an incredible feint on the wing to evade his opponent; Ipswich’s full-back lost his balance and stumbled to the ground.

Snodgrass then delivered a cross, causing the opposing center-back to make a hurried mistake in front of goal and score an own goal.

In the stands, the fans’ cheers were deafening.

In the second half, Vardy once again showcased his killer instinct.

During a quick counter-attack, he received a brilliant long pass from Jordan Henderson from their own half; the ball sailed over the opposing midfield and landed precisely in his running path.

Vardy, without waiting for the ball to land, accelerated, shook off the pursuing defender, and faced the goalkeeper, sealing the victory with a powerful one-on-one shot.

The ball rocketed into the net like a cannonball, 2-0, and the team successfully advanced to the FA Cup Fifth Round.

What pleased Lin Feng even more was that in the seventy-fifth minute of the match, new signing Chris Smalling came on as a substitute, replacing the exhausted captain Nelson, making his first-team debut for Hartlepool United.

This youngster, who joined from non-League football, performed remarkably steadily on the field, his tall frame appearing composed in the penalty area.

Facing an opposing striker in a one-on-one situation, he did not panic.

Instead, he executed a precise sliding tackle, cleanly dispossessing the ball and earning a round of applause from the stands.

His physical prowess and calm defensive positioning made it impossible to tell that he was only 17 years old.

Lin Feng decided to give him more playing opportunities in the upcoming matches.

Another new signing, Jordan Henderson, was also included in the squad list for this match.

Although he did not get to play, he watched the entire game from the sidelines.

He gained a more intuitive understanding of the first team’s match rhythm and atmosphere, his eyes filled with a desire to play.

He even unconsciously swayed his body slightly in rhythm with the game from the substitutes’ bench.

With the League Cup concluded, the team’s focus would entirely shift to the League title race, the FA Cup, and the EFL Trophy campaign.

Lin Feng explicitly demanded in the team’s tactical meeting: “Get over the Arsenal match as soon as possible.

Whether it was regret or pride, it is now in the past. What we need to do now is go all out and fight for every honor we can achieve!”

Meanwhile, Sophie Green’s first installment of her series of interviews, “Northern Prodigies Shine,” was officially published in the Hartlepool Mail.

The protagonist was Gylfi Sigurðsson. In the report, Sophie, with her delicate prose, detailed the Icelandic prodigy’s journey from the streets of Reykjavík to the Phoenix Training Center in Hartlepool, as well as his gratitude to Lin Feng, his “patron,” and his outlook on the future.

The report, once published, sparked a warm response among fans.

Many fans left comments under the newspaper, expressing their move by Sigurðsson’s purity and persistence, and praising Lin Feng’s discerning eye.

The club’s official website message board was also filled with well wishes for Sigurðsson and anticipation for the team’s future.

The report concluded: “When asked about Mr. Lin Feng’s greatest influence on him, Sigurðsson paused for a moment, then said, ‘He made me believe that anything is possible.’” This report attracted widespread attention from fans and media, making Sigurðsson’s image more full and three-dimensional, and allowing more people to understand the story behind this small northern team.

On the training ground, the players’ morale was high, every confrontation filled with power.

The opponent for the EFL Trophy Northern Final had also been confirmed – League One side Doncaster Rovers.

The two-legged tie would decide who would represent the North and reach the Wembley Final, a symbol of supreme glory.

Lin Feng was equally determined to win this highest honor for lower-League teams.

He knew that for these young players and this small club, the experience of playing at Wembley would be an invaluable asset, and an indispensable piece of the glory puzzle in his “Northern Empire” blueprint.

It was not just a trophy, but a declaration to the world that Hartlepool United had risen.
