54: Honor in defeatVictoria Park Stadium was already engulfed by a surging sea of blue and white.

The stands were packed to capacity.

Songs, like mountains roaring and seas surging, converged from all directions, pounding every corner of the stadium, deafening.

This was Hartlepool United’s most important home match in its history, and their closest approach to Wembley Stadium.

In the home team’s locker room.

Old John Mcdonald stood in front of the tactics board, his face flushed with excitement, his forehead beaded with fine sweat.

Lin Feng’s tactics were etched in his mind, every detail clear.

”Lure them in deep, midfield strangulation.” He took a deep breath, using all his strength to make his voice penetrate the tense air, trying to overpower the faint roars of the fans from outside the door.

”Lads, listen!” All eyes instantly focused on him, with a hint of unease, but also with strong desire.

Jamie Vardy rubbed his hands, feeling them a little damp. Kasper Schmeichel tightened his gloves, his gaze firm.

”We have two away goals, that’s our advantage, and their pressure!”

Old John’s gaze swept over the players. He knew the deep-seated unease within these young men, but he had to convey the belief Lin Feng had given him, without the slightest deviation.

”We are the challengers, all the pressure is on them, Arsenal!” He pointed to Arsenal’s crest on the tactics board, ”They are a giant, they can’t afford to lose!”

”We won’t compete with them on skill, we won’t fight them for possession. We’ll give up the midfield, retreat all lines, and turn our half into a suffocating swamp for Arsenal!”

With a red marker, he drew a tight triangle made of three magnets in the midfield area of the tactics board, heavily circling the names of Gary Liddle, Mark Tinkler, and Gylfi Sigurðsson.

He emphasized each player’s defensive zone and movement routes.

”Every tackle, every interception, must make them feel that this isn’t Emirates Stadium, this is Victoria Park, it’s their nightmare!”

Lin Feng stood silently in the corner of the locker room, just watching.

His gaze swept over each player’s face; he could see the tension in their eyes, and also the deep-seated desire.

He knew that words were no longer important at this moment; what they needed was to feel this belief, and then take it onto the field.

The second half whistle pierced the damp, cold air of Victoria Park Stadium.

The pace of the game instantly escalated to its maximum.

Both sides quickened their attacking tempo, and the repeatedly trampled midfield turf became a white-hot battlefield, every tackle sending up splashes of mud and grass.

Arsenal was desperate for that crucial away goal, while Hartlepool United, like a lurking beast, patiently awaited a deadly counter-attack opportunity.

The midfield battle was exceptionally fierce; Gary Liddle and Mark Tinkler were like two tireless meat grinders, constantly running and tackling.

Sigurdsson, behind them, covered the gaps with precise anticipation.

Arsenal’s passing and possession game struggled to advance here; the ball was often intercepted during passes, and then Hartlepool United quickly sent it forward, seeking Jamie Vardy’s speed.

The match reached a stalemate for a time, with both sides trading blows but lacking clear chances.

In the fifty-eighth minute, the deadlock was broken.

Arsenal, with their characteristic fluid combinations in the attacking third, tore open Hartlepool United’s defense.

Thierry Henry on the right flank drew the attention of two defenders; instead of forcing a breakthrough, he used his heel to deliver an imaginative diagonal pass.

The ball cut through the crowd, accurately finding Robin van Persie, who was surging in from deep.

Robin van Persie, inside the box, held off Ben Clark with his body. Without even adjusting, he struck the ball, calmly slotting it into the far corner of the goal.

0-1!

Arsenal took the lead away from home, making the aggregate score 3-2!

Victoria Park Stadium fell silent for a moment.

The deafening singing was cut off.

Fans stared blankly at the pitch, their excitement frozen into shock.

But just a few seconds later, a louder roar erupted again from all corners of the stands, as fans cheered on their team with even hoarser, louder songs.

They had not given up hope; they used their voices to tell the players on the field that they were still there.

In the VIP box, Lin Feng’s face was expressionless. He calmly picked up the walkie-talkie and pressed the talk button.

He said, ”Kyle, warm up.” On the sidelines, Old John immediately understood. He turned and shouted to the substitutes, ”Kevin! Warm up! Quick!”

Trailing in the score, Lin Feng decisively played his trump card. The tall striker Kevin Kyle took off his training bib, replacing the exhausted left winger Adam Boyd.

Boyd’s steps were already a bit unsteady as he left the field, but he still waved to the fans.

Hartlepool United’s formation shifted to the most direct, most primitive two-striker system.

They aimed to attack Arsenal’s defense in the simplest way possible.

As soon as Kyle came on, he used his tall physique to create chaos at the edge of Arsenal’s box.

In the seventy-fifth minute, Hartlepool United, in desperation, found their moment of glory.

The team earned a throw-in opportunity on the right flank in the attacking third, not far from the box.

Matty Robson threw the ball with all his might deep into Arsenal’s penalty area.

Chaos ensued in the box; Arsenal’s defenders tried to win the header, but the newly introduced Kevin Kyle, like an iron tower, leaped high, flicking the ball on with his head at the near post.

The ball changed direction, falling towards the far post!

A black figure burst out from the crowd!

It was Jamie Vardy! He beat William Gallas to the falling ball, and without a moment’s hesitation, unleashed a powerful volley!

The ball rocketed into Arsenal’s net!

1-1! Aggregate score 3-3! Hartlepool United, victory once again swung back to Hartlepool United!

Victoria Park Stadium absolutely erupted!

Fans jumped, hugged, and roared in a frenzy.

Jamie Vardy sprinted towards the corner flag, roaring and pumping his fists, as his teammates swarmed him, embracing him tightly.

”Jamie Vardy! It’s Jamie Vardy again!” In the commentary box, Arsenal legend Ian Wright jumped up from his seat, his voice trembling with excitement.

”He’s like a tireless cheetah! At the most crucial moment, he once again saved Hartlepool United!

Victoria Park Stadium is absolutely boiling! This match is too exciting!”

On the sidelines, Wenger’s face showed a helpless expression as his team was equalized again.

He used his last substitution, bringing on the lightning-fast Walcott for Flamini, attempting to settle the match with a final surge.

Walcott’s young face was etched with eagerness; he knew this was his chance to prove himself.

The Gunners’ regal style was fully on display in the final moments of the match.

In the eighty-sixth minute, Arsenal launched a deadly counter-attack after winning the ball in midfield.

Hartlepool United’s players were at their physical limit, and their defense showed a slight crack.

Cesc Fàbregas dribbled through the middle, looked up, and delivered a precise through-ball that tore through Hartlepool United’s entire defense.

The ball pierced deep into the heart of the defense. Thierry Henry, with his world-class positioning and terrifying explosiveness, shook off Danny Simpson’s marking, creating a one-on-one opportunity.

Simpson desperately reached out, but couldn’t even touch Henry’s shirt.

Facing the onrushing Kasper Schmeichel, Henry showed no panic, calmly using the inside of his foot to gently push the ball into the far corner of the goal.

1-2! Aggregate score 3-4!

This goal virtually killed the match.

The storm of the North, at this moment, dramatically drew to a close.

The clamor of Victoria Park Stadium instantly cooled down.

Although Hartlepool United’s players did not give up in the final moments, desperately pushing forward, they were powerless to turn the tide.

At the final whistle, Hartlepool United lost 1-2 at home to Arsenal, with an aggregate score of 3-4, regrettably ending their League Cup semi-final journey.

The fans at Victoria Park Stadium rose to their feet.

There was no sadness, no blame, only the most fervent and sustained applause for the heroes on the field who had given their last ounce of strength.

The applause surged onto the pitch, long and unending.

Hartlepool United’s players, though their faces were filled with disappointment and reluctance, held their heads high, accepting the tribute from all the fans.

Jamie Vardy lowered his head, sweat and rain mixing as they streamed down his face, but he still walked with his teammates towards the stands, waving to the fans.

In the VIP box, Lin Feng watched everything on the field, his eyes showing no disappointment, but rather a more resolute glint.

He knew that this defeat was an incredibly valuable experience. This young team would learn much from this setback.

His gaze was already fixed on a more distant future, on the upcoming FA Cup journey.
