Breaking SSS-Rank Heroines

Jinhae

I planted the cane in the packed earth and let my weight settle on it the way everyone expected.

Instructor Hwang stood three paces from Seojun.

The man was still thick through the chest and shoulders even past fifty. Scarred forearms. Knuckles like old oak. Seojun’s personal instructor—scarred outer-disciple out of a mid-tier Orthodox sect—had drilled the second son for years. He had even tried with me once, years ago, when the meridians first collapsed. There had been nothing left to train. He had looked at my ruined leg, set the practice sword aside, and never asked again.

Today he looked at me the same way he looked at a cracked pot that somehow still held water.

He raised one heavy hand.

“Both of you. Center.”

I limped forward. The cane tapped a slow rhythm. Seojun swaggered in like the courtyard already belonged to him. His wooden practice sword rested on one shoulder.

“Rules are simple. First to yield, first to be knocked unconscious, or first who cannot continue loses. Strikes to the head are permitted. Joint locks are permitted. Internal energy is permitted. Killing blows are not. If I call stop, you stop. Clear?”

Seojun’s grin showed teeth.

“Crystal.”

I inclined my head once.

“Clear.”

On the northern veranda my father sat like carved stone. Iron-gray hair. Disappointment already settled into the lines around his mouth. He didn’t speak. He simply watched with that same cold gaze he had worn at every banquet.

Hwang turned a slow circle so the entire household could hear.

“Silence.”

The whispers died.

Seojun’s eyes locked on mine. Fury, years in the making. The second son who had always been told he would inherit everything the first son could not hold.

He spun the wooden sword once and let the tip rest in the dirt.

“I’m going all out, Hyung. No holding back. Try not to die too fast. I want the servants to get their money’s worth.”

I smiled with all my teeth.

“I’ll savor it a little longer then.”

Seojun’s face twisted. “You fucking cripple—keep running that mouth and I’ll break every bone you have left!”

Hwang looked between us.

“Ready?”

“Ready,” Seojun barked.

I shifted my grip on the cane.

“Ready. And Seojun—” I let the words carry just far enough for the front rows to hear. “Don’t hold back. If you do, you’re going to lose to a cripple. That would be embarrassing for both of us.”

A ripple of shocked laughter moved through the servants. Seojun’s jaw flexed. The Qi pressure around him thickened.

Hwang dropped his hand.

“Begin.”

Seojun exploded forward.

Kang Family Iron Palm Style. Straight-line power. Palm strikes chained into elbow, elbow into knee, knee into a rising forearm smash meant to cave a ribcage. He had drilled these combinations since he could walk. The wooden sword stayed planted in the dirt for now; he wanted to break me with his hands first.

I watched the hip turn a full half-second before the first palm left his shoulder.

Too wide. Too eager.

I let the strike come. At the last possible instant I shifted my weight onto the cane, twisted my shoulders a finger-width, and the palm cut empty air beside my cheek. The wind of it stirred my hair.

Seojun’s eyes widened a fraction.

He chained immediately. Low kick to the ruined knee. I hopped it on the good leg, cane planting for balance, and the follow-up elbow whistled past my collarbone.

I did not counter.

I simply was not there.

Thirty seconds. Forty. A full minute of him pressing and me sliding half-steps, cane tapping, body turning just enough. Every combination that should have dropped a healthy man met only air or the ghost of a sleeve.

Seojun’s breathing roughened. Color rose in his neck.

From the edge of the ring, the first murmurs rose.

“He’s… dodging?”

“Seojun isn’t taking it seriously yet.”

“Luck. Pure luck. One clean hit and the eldest folds.”

I let a small smile show and spoke just loud enough.

“When are you going to take this seriously, little brother?”

Seojun snarled.

Qi flared. The next palm strike carried real force—enough to pulp the soft scholar’s body everyone still believed I owned. I read the shoulder, the pivot, the exact line of power. At the final heartbeat I dropped my weight, cane sweeping in a short arc that looked like desperate defense, and the strike screamed past my ear close enough that the heat of his skin brushed my ear.

The crowd noise changed.

“Did you see that?”

“He’s reading him.”

Seojun’s fury climbed like a fever. He abandoned the clean family forms and started throwing heavier, uglier combinations. A rising knee aimed at my gut. A hammer-fist at the collarbone. A spinning back-fist that would have broken my jaw if it landed.

I slipped each one by centimeters.

Mind Evolution painted every trajectory in cold blue light across my vision. Will sat coiled behind my eyes, ready, but I kept it leashed. Not yet. Let him dig the hole deeper. Let every missed strike carve another crack in the image of the untouchable second son.

At the ring’s edge Ahyun’s eyes had gone huge. From the eastern veranda Seolhwa tracked every near-miss.

Seojun overextended on a lunging palm.

I stepped inside the pocket, cane braced, and for the first time I touched him—two fingers, barely a touch, against the inside of his wrist as I turned the strike past my ribs.

Will sank in.

Not enough to stagger. Just enough to fray the Qi flow for a single breath. A tiny stutter in the power that made his next combination half a beat late.

I was already gone when the follow-up arrived.

“Still playing, Seojun?” I asked, voice calm, almost bored. “I thought you said all out.”

He roared and tore the wooden sword free.

The blade whistled. Horizontal cut meant to take my head. I ducked under it as the wind parted my hair, and came up on the other side already smiling.

The crowd was no longer murmuring.

They were shouting.

Some still insisted it was luck. Others had gone silent with something closer to awe. A kitchen auntie near the weapon racks actually covered her mouth with both hands.

My father’s expression never changed.

But his fingers had tightened once on the arm of his seat.

Seojun came again, sword and free hand working together now. The combinations were faster, dirtier, fueled by the public humiliation of missing a cripple in front of the entire household. Sweat flew from his chin.

I let him push me in a slow circle around the ring.

Every step looked like retreat.

Every dodge looked narrower than the last.

Five more exchanges, I thought.

Seojun’s eyes were murder.

Behind him, Instructor Hwang’s scarred face had gone carefully blank. The old man had drilled Seojun since childhood. He knew exactly how clean those misses were.

I planted the cane, shifted my weight as if my left knee had finally betrayed me, and watched Seojun take the bait with everything he had.

“There it is,” I said. “Took you long enough.”
