Chapter 1422: Chapter 1423: Choosing a Mentor

Ye Luo and Yun Liancheng walked together towards the Royal Academy, but along the way, Ye Luo noticed that Yun Liancheng kept looking at him with a peculiar gaze.

Therefore, Ye Luo asked in confusion, ”What are you looking at?”

Yun Liancheng smiled slightly, ”Brother Ye, you really seem quite pleased with yourself. Tell me, did you encounter some good fortune?”

Ye Luo was slightly stunned by the question. In fact, it seemed that he should have encountered bad luck, and moreover, rather serious bad luck at that. After all, that mandatory Border Guard task treated Ye Luo like a pawn to be manipulated, leaving him with no way to refuse.

Suddenly, Ye Luo was taken aback again as he noticed Yun Liancheng’s nose twitching.

In an instant, Ye Luo realized he had misunderstood the intention. Yun Liancheng was actually referring to the events of last night.

Such matters were not something Ye Luo wanted to discuss openly, so he merely passed it off with a laugh and swiftly changed the subject, ”Brother Yun, I am now also a member of the Royal Academy, but I’m not sure what cultivation arrangements we have today?”

Seeing Ye Luo change the subject, Yun Liancheng naturally would not be so tactless as to press further. Instead, he answered along the lines of Ye Luo’s question, ”It’s hard to say, given that each mentor has their own method of training. By the way, don’t you have your own mentor yet?”

The Royal Academy is different from Sect practices, but it’s also unlike school models.

Upon entering the Royal Academy, every student is assigned a mentor, and all subsequent training will be designated by this mentor. This is similar to taking a master within a Sect, but unlike taking a master, mentors do not prevent students from learning from other mentors.

In fact, they often proactively assign tasks to students to learn from other mentors.

However, typically, as long as you enter the Royal Academy, you would be assigned a mentor.

Of course, Ye Luo knew his situation was exceptional, and whether or not he would be assigned and who would determine it was not solely up to the Royal Academy - it was for the Border Guard to decide!

Of course, in front of Yun Liancheng, Ye Luo did not find it appropriate to be too explicit, so he could only say, ”Probably because I passed the assessment yesterday and immediately went home, there wasn’t time for an assignment!”

”Oh, I see. That’s my oversight. I forgot to remind Brother Ye. But it’s not a problem. If you go today, the academy will surely assign you a mentor. However, Brother Ye, do you have an ideal mentor in mind?”

Yun Liancheng was prepared to inquire if Ye Luo had a preferred mentor; if so, he would be willing to speak to his own mentor on Ye Luo’s behalf.

But how could Ye Luo have an ideal candidate in mind? Not to mention that Ye Luo was completely unaware of who the mentors at the Royal Academy were, even if he had known, he was essentially powerless to choose.

However, Ye Luo did want to hear Yun Liancheng’s suggestion after all, since he still didn’t know how long he would be staying at the Royal Academy.

”Do you have a good candidate in mind, Brother Yun?”

Ye Luo asked directly.

Yun Liancheng thought for a moment, then said, ”The mentors at the Royal Academy are divided into five ranks, and their identities are distinguished by the number of dragon patterns on the jade pendants they wear. A five-dragon jade pendant represents the highest rank, but there are only three individuals with such status in the entire Royal Academy, so don’t even consider it.”

”As for what you can consider now, it would only be mentors with either a one-dragon or two-dragon jade pendant. Of course, the prerequisite is that you must obtain the mentor’s approval.”

Ye Luo nodded slightly; he naturally understood the implication in Yun Liancheng’s words.

However, what kind of mentor Ye Luo could choose seemed not to be something he could decide on his own. Instead, he had to wait for instructions from the Border Guard.

Ye Luo remembered that before he was sent back, the Border Guard had informed him to always be ready for new missions. The Border Guard would communicate with Ye Luo about what those tasks were!

It was likely that the message had now arrived.

After all, selecting a mentor was indeed a very important matter. If Ye Luo was not a person from the Border Guard, then he would face many difficulties in carrying out certain missions in the future.

Indeed, as Ye Luo had guessed, suddenly a communication alert sounded; it was a message. This should be the first message Ye Luo received since he arrived in the Martial Realm. Regrettably, its purpose was to issue an order to Ye Luo.

Ye Luo opened the bracelet on his arm, which served as his identity proof in the Martial Realm and also had many other functions.

The content of the message was simple: it was a request for Ye Luo to choose You Ji as his mentor. But who was this You Ji?

Ye Luo noted this name to himself and nonchalantly asked Yun Liancheng: ”Brother Yun, I’ve heard that there is an instructor named You Ji in the Royal Academy who’s quite good. I’m thinking of choosing her as my mentor!”

”What did you just say? You Ji? You want to choose You Ji?”

Yun Liancheng stood there, looking utterly astonished at Ye Luo, with an expression of disbelief. Yun Liancheng had considered many possible choices for Ye Luo, but never ever contemplated that Ye Luo would actually pick You Ji.

”What’s the matter, can’t I?”

Ye Luo smiled.

Yun Liancheng’s expression was odd, seeing Ye Luo insist on choosing You Ji, Yun Liancheng could only nod repeatedly: ”Of course, you can. You want to choose You Ji? Not just you, I’m afraid most people in the Royal Academy would want to choose You Ji as their mentor! Ye Luo, Ye Luo, I don’t know where you heard the name You Ji, but do you know what kind of person she actually is?”

Ye Luo had no idea who You Ji was; this was merely a task given by the Border Guard, and it seemed that there was no room for refusal!

”What’s so special about this You Ji?”

Ye Luo asked curiously.

”Haha, you actually ask what’s the matter!”

Yun Liancheng’s expression changed again and again, not sure whether Ye Luo was truly ignorant or pretending. Regardless, Yun Liancheng continued to explain: ”You Ji is one of the only three Five-Dragon Instructors at the Royal Academy. However, she only accepts members of the Royal Family as her disciples because You Ji herself is a member of the Royal Family.”

”It is said that You Ji was a princess of the Royal Family, a legitimate princess. However, the Emperor chose a marriage for her which You Ji herself did not like. Afterward, because of this marriage, You Ji had a fallout with the Royal Family and went to the Royal Academy in a huff, vowing never to marry in this life. Instead, she decided to spend her remaining years nurturing more talents for the Empire.”

”Let me put it to you this way, You Ji has a total of only seven disciples. Apart from the current Crown Prince, the remaining six are all Commandery Princesses and the likes. What do you think, do you stand a chance?”
