Reborn Divine Doctor: The Abandoned Girl's Legend

Chapter 1449: Chapter 509: The Disappearance of the Water Spirit

Earlier, in a nearby mountain village, because of the same drought and their inability to pay grain tax, that Demon Hunter Representative Team led people into the village and went on a rampage, beating and smashing.

Several elders in the village, seventy or eighty years old, were beaten to death on the spot.

Once this spread, the nearby villages were all on edge, terrified and uneasy, which in turn forced the Pan Village chief to go steal grain from the North Warehouse.

From the village chief’s account, Pan Village wasn’t the only one that encountered this; several surrounding villages had also suffered drought in succession and likewise couldn’t pay grain.

Another Representative Team?

Only then did Ye Lingyue and the others realize that there was another Representative Team that had come to Ah County.

This time, there were many Representative Teams participating in the Jiu Provinces Hunting; the Huangquan Team was only one of them, so it wasn’t strange they hadn’t known of the other party’s existence.

Thinking back on the County Magistrate’s reaction earlier, Ye Lingyue and the others finally understood that the reason they had been sent to the North Warehouse to guard the granary must have been that Representative Team’s doing.

The other side’s intent was blatantly obvious: to seize the Merit and leave Ah County as soon as possible.

”Outrageous. There are at least tens of thousands of dan of grain in that North Warehouse. Even if there’s a natural disaster, opening the granary would be enough to feed countless disaster victims from the neighboring three townships and eighteen villages. If an official won’t act for the people, what kind of damned official is he? I’m going to drag that County Magistrate over here.”

As soon as Situ and Lan Feng heard this, their blood boiled; they cracked their knuckles, ready to go teach that County Magistrate a lesson.

”Stop. The both of you calm down. This isn’t Huangquan City. Fang Ah has its own City Lord and its own County Magistrate. Right now we’re only an Ordinary Representative Team. If we really go head‑to‑head with the county government, that’s disrupting order; we’ll very likely be treated as bandits. Do you still want to continue participating in the Jiu Provinces Hunting or not?”

Ling Yue’s scolding left Situ and Lan Feng completely deflated.

”Ling Yue is right. You two only ever mess things up. I think we need to take a long view on this. Why don’t we split up and walk around the village, see whether the situation in the village is really as the village chief says?”

Gong Linxin suggested.

The others agreed one after another and split up to patrol Pan Village.

Ye Lingyue and Guangzi formed a group, bringing Little Zhiyo and Little Wuya with them as they inspected the village wells and the stream at the village entrance.

”The water’s already at the bottom, and the flow is very narrow; it’s already stopped. And the village’s few main wells have all dried up too. The drought is severe.”

Guangzi made a circuit and came back.

”The crops in the fields are at the grain‑filling stage. If they don’t get water, there won’t be a single grain to harvest.”

Ye Lingyue furrowed her brows; the more she saw, the stranger she felt it was.

She remembered that according to the records, the Ah County Region had always had favorable winds and timely rains, with several major rivers flowing through. Precisely because of this, grain crops in this Region had always grown very well.

In the several hundred years since the County annals had been kept, let alone such a severe major drought, they had never even encountered a minor drought.

Generally speaking, a Region’s climate does not become abnormal for no reason.

”Boss.”

Little Wuya, who had been following at Ye Lingyue’s side, suddenly spoke.

”I feel something is off about this place. It’s lacking Water Spirit.”

Little Wuya’s words were like a bucket of cold water waking a dreamer.

Ye Lingyue immediately came to a realization. No wonder she felt something was wrong; just as Little Wuya said, Pan Village lacked Water Spirit.

In the Ancient Nine Provinces, aside from a few cities such as Yanmen and Huangquan where Spiritual Power was insufficient, in most Regions the Five Spirits were still relatively complete.

The more abundant the Five Spirits, the better all things in a place can grow.

It’s just like Ye Lingyue’s Hong Meng Heaven, a rare blessed land of the Five Spirits, so all kinds of crops and even Spiritual Beasts inside it grow extremely well.

Compared to the outside world, even Wuling City can’t match Hong Meng Heaven; the Five Spirits there are at least ten times, even dozens of times more abundant.

Of course, this abundance only applies to Ordinary common folk. For specific Martial Artists and Alchemists, if they want to cultivate the Power of Reincarnation, they still have to go to those super cities or blessed lands like Wuling City.

Little Wuya was a descendant of the Ice Fire Phoenix; she was more sensitive than anyone to the Five Elements Spirit of water and fire attributes.

After she followed Ye Lingyue to Pan Village, she immediately felt that the Five Spirits here were very unbalanced.

After carefully sensing it, she discovered that in this village there was practically no Water Spirit.

Water is the source of all life. Without Water Spirit, the entire village is like being air‑dried; the other attributes of the Five Elements Spirit are rapidly draining away as well.

The trees begin to wither, the soil becomes barren, Golden Stone crumbles into sand, the rivers run dry, turning it into a place of severe drought.

”Lacking Water Spirit, huh...”

Ye Lingyue pondered.

Before long, the other team members also gathered information and returned to regroup.

Through chatting with the villagers, the team members also discovered that everything the village chief had said was true.

”We can’t let this go on. We have to report this to the County Magistrate and find a way to resolve the drought in Pan Village. If the villagers stay here, even if they don’t starve, they’ll die of thirst.”

Everyone was in complete agreement.

So Ye Lingyue took the village chief with her and returned to the county government, recounting in full detail to the County Magistrate the predicament Pan Village was facing.

”Pan Village has a drought? That’s simply absurd.”

”This official has been assigned to Ah County for five years now. In these five years, the winds and rains have been timely; there has never been any natural disaster or man‑made calamity. Besides, none of the villages near Pan Village have reported any drought. Are you telling me that in the space of a few li, the sky is different?”

When the County Magistrate heard this, not only did he show not the slightest bit of sympathy, he instead loudly berated Ye Lingyue and the Pan Village chief.

”County Magistrate, if you don’t believe us, you can go take a look at Pan Village.”

Seeing the County Magistrate being so unreasonable, Ye Lingyue stepped forward, grabbed him, and tried to drag him outside.

”Impudence! How dare you hold the County Magistrate hostage. Seize them all!”

It happened in a flash.

Several burly men suddenly rushed into the county government hall.

Each of these men was tall and thick‑set; the short‑bearded man in the lead was none other than Captain An of the Tian Jun Representative Team.

”You’re the team leader of the other Representative Team stationed in Ah County? I’m Ye Lingyue from the Huangquan Team. There’s a drought in Pan Village; the situation is extremely urgent.”

Ye Lingyue stared straight at Captain An.

Who would have thought that upon seeing she was just a dark‑skinned slip of a girl, thin and frail, without even the Power of Reincarnation, he let out a cold snort.

”What the hell are you, to even think yourself worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as this Captain? Drought or no drought, I only know that failing to pay grain tax is breaking the law. As a team leader, you colluded with villagers to resist tax; that’s an even greater crime.”

Ye Lingyue’s dark eyes dimmed. In the next instant, a fierce gust swept past.

Her shoulder suddenly lifted; in that instant she unleashed the ”Ten Layers of Heaven” Divine Skills, her body accelerating as she rammed her shoulder viciously toward that Captain An.

Captain An’s eyes were full of disdain; he didn’t even bother to dodge, intending to let Ye Lingyue bring humiliation upon herself.
