Chapter 1547: Chapter 13: Holy Healing City and the White Witch

The Central Plains Region of the Dark Raven Continent is said to be perpetually spring-like, quite different from the western part where Su Xiao was before, which is perpetually rainy and has a cold, damp climate.

Based on Su Xiao’s observations during his journey, over 60% of the land on the Dark Raven Continent is undeveloped, filled with wild grasses, yet the soil is fertile.

This continent does not lack resources; it lacks civilization. As long as more than 10% of the land is sown, most civilians’ food issues could be solved. Unfortunately, war has restricted the planting area to less than 4% of the land, which is astoundingly low.

Witches, local lords, slave manors, and indigenous tribes all contribute to the issues that prevent the civilians of the Dark Raven Continent from having enough food and warmth. Overly outdated information prevents the civilians from realizing this. In their view, most of the hunger is caused by climate conditions.

Don’t think this is foolish; most regions suffer from closed information networks. Even if one day the Holy Healing Church, the leading organization here, is wiped out, civilians outside the Central Plains Region would take a month or even half a year to hear the news, while indigenous tribes that still live primitively would not care at all.

During his travels, Su Xiao has read the books obtained from the Royal Palace, among which ”A Brief History of the Dark Raven Continent” and ”Epoch of the Witches” are the most valuable. ”A Brief History of the Dark Raven Continent” was written by a Prophecy Witch seven years ago. Considering the speed of development in this world, this is similar to several months old newspapers; the information isn’t new but still useful.

As described by the witch named Seria, the Dark Raven Continent can essentially be divided into three main areas. The Central Plains and the west are both under the control of the Holy Healing Church, and the rule of law is relatively complete. The east is mostly controlled by indigenous forces. When traveling there, one can easily end up as indigenous barbecue—exceptionally thrilling—but this place has the highest concentration of witches, belonging to the Land of No Law.

The north, on the other hand, is filled with icefields and tundra. Hunting is the primary activity for the civilians, who are highly fierce. In such lands where long winters dominate, crops cannot be grown, so civilians tussle with beasts for survival areas daily, and even breastfeeding women are fierce. One moment they’re feeding their child, the next they’re grabbing a weapon to fend off wolves alongside their husbands.

The King of the North in Winterfell City is very adept at warfare, but unfortunately not at strategy, coupled with poor resources in the territory, he can only occupy the North Border. There are few witches here, not because witches fear the fierce local customs, but because it’s too cold; without understanding the environment, witches may freeze to death here. Indeed, many witches have met their fate due to the relentless blizzards.

In short: the Central and western parts are stable, the east is brutal and lawless, the north is cold, and the south is the witches’ territory—Human Forbidden Zone.

Su Xiao has some basic understanding of the Dark Raven Continent now. He is gradually moving past the exploration stage and is currently in the Central Plains region, just about five kilometers away from Holy Healing City.

After entering the direct control range of Holy Healing City, Su Xiao rarely saw roaming thieves and primitive natives. Along the way, he’s killed at least dozens of thieves. Every few kilometers, he would encounter one or two groups of thieves who did not bother to negotiate with travelers but directly killed and looted their corpses for goods.

Approaching the edge of Holy Healing City, Su Xiao saw many villages primarily engaged in animal husbandry. They were not warm towards travelers, but didn’t mind allowing them to stay if currency was offered.

After another 20 minutes of travel, a majestic city wall appeared in sight, approximately a hundred meters tall, with some patch marks visible—likely caused by witches.

Although he hadn’t entered the city yet, Su Xiao saw patrol teams. They were not wearing heavy armor but instead more advanced and lighter scale armor.

From a distance, the city wall of Holy Healing City looked like a large mountain, and up close, it resembled a Sky Wall.

It’s hard to imagine how, given the technological level of this world, they managed to pile up a wall over a hundred meters high and more than twenty meters thick. Then again, this might not have been the work of humans at all.

Su Xiao just approached the city gate and was immediately met with the bustling sounds of people. After observing for a while, he discovered that entering Holy Healing City was much easier than anticipated; no fee is required, and no inspection either. Soldiers holding old-fashioned shotguns stood on either side of the city gate, their eyes sharp as hawks, scanning each civilian entering the city. If they spotted any suspicious targets, they would conduct further checks.

”Stop.”

Su Xiao’s group had just reached the gate when five soldiers with shotguns approached; their suspicions aroused by A Mu.

One of the soldiers took out a yellow crystal the size of an egg, inside of which was a mercury-like fluid. He brought the yellow crystal close to A Mu, but the crystal showed no change.

”In that case, proceed into the city. Have a pleasant day.”

The soldier was unexpectedly polite. He even smiled courteously at A Mu before reverting to his original serious demeanor.

Just as Su Xiao was about to enter the city, a commotion arose from behind.

”Slowly raise your hands above your head; don’t think we can’t detect your avatar.”

The soldier’s shout drew Su Xiao’s attention.

”Hey, no need to be so serious.”

A lazy female voice followed, prompting Su Xiao to focus on a woman in a shoulder-baring long dress, black gloves, and holding a slender pipe. Her head was filled with wavy purple hair.

”5, 4, 3...”

The dozens of soldiers at the gate counted down in unison. When they reached three, they simultaneously pulled the triggers of their shotguns. After a crisp, synchronized sound, dozens of gun barrels were aimed at the purple-haired woman.

”Oh my, surrendering.”

The purple-haired woman exhaled blue smoke and slowly raised her hands, even yawning lightly.

One soldier raised his right arm, signaling not to fire yet. He inserted a yellow crystal into his mouth and slowly approached the purple-haired woman.

”Your origin, your life, age, whether you are wanted. You have one minute to explain.”

Clearly, the woman was a witch.

”Annie Claudia, the White Witch. As for my age, that’s a secret. As for being wanted, I seem to be wanted for tax issues. I’m here in Holy Healing City because of this matter, but the scenery here is beautiful, I suddenly feel like settling down.”

”Wanted for tax issues?”

The soldier captain was evidently stunned; it was the first time he’d heard of a witch paying taxes.

”Of course, your armor is all my invention, and the tax issues within it are quite troublesome for me.”

”Lady Annie Claudia Frederica Saxton?”

This time, the soldier captain was even more astonished.

”Impressive that you remembered my full name, amazing. Sometimes I even forget it myself~”

”Lady Anni, please provide your identity proof.”

The soldier captain’s attitude did a complete 180-degree turn.

”Almost forgot, I have identification granted by your Holy Society, and I happen to carry it with me.”

As she spoke, the purple-haired woman reached into her chest, contrasting her black silk gloves against her fair skin, causing every man watching nearby to swallow involuntarily.

Su Xiao was also watching this purple-haired woman, thinking, it seems like I’ve run into a big catch.
