Lord of Perverted Ladies

The shirt was folded incorrectly again.

Adrian stared at it.

Then he looked at Lena.

She looked back at him.

”Don’t,” she said.

”I haven’t said anything.”

”Your face has.”

”My face is innocent.”

”Your face is holding a grudge against a piece of clothing.”

Adrian picked up the shirt and folded it a third time.

Lena sighed, took it from him, and fixed it in two movements.

”There. See? Not difficult.”

”I was testing whether you would intervene.”

”Of course you were.”

She placed the shirt on the pile and handed him another.

Adrian accepted it with the solemnity of a man receiving a dangerous assignment.

For the next ten minutes, he folded clothes under supervision.

It was humiliating.

Not because he was bad at it. He was beginning to suspect he could become reasonably competent with enough practice.

It was humiliating because Lena had discovered that correcting him was more entertaining than letting him struggle.

Eventually, she declared the laundry finished and went to put the kettle on.

Adrian remained on the sofa, looking at the neat pile of clothes.

He had faced the beginning of existence with less anxiety than he had faced a bedsheet.

There was probably a lesson in that.

He decided not to look for it.

His phone rang.

The caller was Noah.

Adrian answered.

”Have you burned anything else?”

”No.”

”Progress.”

”Can you come over?”

The humor disappeared from Adrian’s face.

”What happened?”

”Nothing serious. I just—”

Noah stopped.

Adrian waited.

”I don’t really want to be alone right now.”

”All right. I’ll come.”

He ended the call and stood.

Lena appeared from the kitchen, holding two cups.

”Where are you going?”

”Noah needs company.”

She studied him for a moment, then placed one of the cups on the table.

”Take an umbrella. It might rain.”

Adrian glanced at the clear window.

”The sky is completely clear.”

”Take the umbrella.”

He picked it up.

He had learned that arguing with Lena about weather predictions was an excellent way to waste an afternoon.

Before leaving, he kissed her forehead.

”I’ll be back soon.”

”I’ll be here.”

The answer was simple.

It stayed with him all the way downstairs.

---

Noah lived in a small apartment above a convenience store.

Adrian found him sitting on the floor beside the coffee table, surrounded by takeout containers and several unopened letters.

There was no television playing. No music. No attempt to make the room look more welcoming than it was.

Noah had simply been sitting there.

For how long, Adrian couldn’t tell.

”You look terrible,” Adrian said.

Noah glanced up.

”Thank you.”

”You’re welcome.”

Adrian took off his shoes and entered.

”Have you eaten?”

”Yes.”

Adrian looked at the containers.

”That isn’t an answer.”

”I ate.”

”What?”

Noah pointed vaguely toward the kitchen.

”Food.”

”Wonderful. I’ll alert the medical authorities.”

Noah laughed, and the tension in his shoulders loosened slightly.

Adrian sat on the floor opposite him.

For a while, they talked about nothing important.

Noah complained about his apartment’s terrible plumbing. Adrian told him about Lena’s campaign to improve his laundry-folding abilities. They argued about whether instant noodles counted as a proper meal.

It was easy.

That was the strange thing about friendship.

Sometimes the most useful conversation was the one that never reached the subject a person had called you to discuss.

Eventually, Noah leaned back against the sofa.

”My coworker resigned.”

Adrian turned toward him.

”What?”

”He submitted his resignation this afternoon. He said he couldn’t keep working there after what happened.”

”Did he blame you?”

”Not directly.”

Noah rubbed his face.

”He sent me a message saying he hoped I was happy with the outcome.”

Adrian frowned.

”That’s unfair.”

”Maybe.”

”You’re not responsible for his decision to resign.”

”I know.”

Noah said it too quickly.

Adrian waited.

”I keep thinking about what I could have done differently,” Noah admitted. ”Maybe I could have spoken to him privately before telling the company. Maybe I could have given him more time. Maybe I could have found a way to protect him without lying.”

”Could you have?”

”I don’t know.”

”Then you don’t know whether those options would have worked.”

Noah looked at the ceiling.

”I hate uncertainty.”

”You’re in good company.”

”You’re supposed to be the one who has answers.”

”I used to think that, too.”

Noah turned toward him.

”What changed?”

Adrian considered the question.

”I realized that having an answer isn’t the same as understanding a problem. Sometimes an answer is just something you say because you don’t want to sit with the uncertainty.”

Noah was quiet.

”And sometimes,” Adrian continued, ”you can spend so much time imagining better ways you could have handled something that you forget the decision you actually had to make.”

”So I should stop thinking about it?”

”No. Think about it. Learn from it. Just don’t turn every possibility into evidence that you failed.”

Noah stared at him.

”That sounds suspiciously reasonable.”

”I’m trying something new.”

”Don’t overdo it.”

Adrian laughed.

Then Noah’s expression became serious again.

”I don’t think my coworker will ever forgive me.”

”Maybe he won’t.”

”You don’t think I should try to explain myself?”

”Have you already explained yourself?”

”Yes.”

”Did he listen?”

”Not really.”

”Then perhaps you’ve said enough for now.”

Noah looked down at his hands.

”I don’t like leaving things unfinished.”

Adrian understood that more than he wanted to.

He had spent an enormous amount of time trying to finish things that had never been his to finish.

Every unanswered question had seemed like a problem. Every departure had felt like an incomplete story. Every broken connection had become something he needed to repair.

It had taken him years to understand that other people were not obligations waiting to be fulfilled.

They were people.

They could walk away.

They could refuse to listen.

They could decide that the version of a relationship they had known was no longer something they wanted.

And he had to let them.

”Maybe you don’t get to finish this one,” Adrian said.

Noah closed his eyes.

”That’s depressing.”

”Yes.”

”You’re really bad at comforting people.”

”I brought no promises and questionable company.”

”At least you’re honest.”

They sat in silence.

After a while, Noah reached for one of the unopened letters on the table.

”My landlord sent me this three days ago.”

Adrian stared at him.

”Why haven’t you opened it?”

”I don’t like letters.”

”You work in an office. Surely you receive letters.”

”Those are other people’s problems.”

”And this is?”

Noah looked at the envelope.

”Probably rent.”

Adrian slowly turned his head toward him.

”You’re telling me you called me here because you’re worried about your coworker, but you’ve been avoiding a letter about your rent?”

”I can be concerned about multiple things.”

”That’s impressive.”

Noah opened the envelope.

They read it together.

It was, in fact, a notice about rent.

Nothing dramatic. No eviction. No financial catastrophe. Just a reminder that the payment date was approaching and a request to confirm the renewal of his lease.

Noah exhaled.

”That could have been worse.”

”It could also have been opened three days ago.”

”Don’t ruin the moment.”

Adrian laughed.

Noah set the letter aside and leaned his head against the sofa.

”I think I called you because I didn’t want to spend the whole evening thinking about what happened.”

”That’s fine.”

”I don’t need you to solve it.”

”I couldn’t even solve the laundry.”

Noah smiled.

For the first time since Adrian had arrived, he looked comfortable.

They ordered dinner.

It arrived late, and the delivery driver called Noah twice because neither of them had heard the buzzer. The food was slightly cold, the drinks were wrong, and Noah spent five minutes arguing with Adrian about whether they should complain.

They decided not to.

Then they complained about the food anyway.

It was a good evening.

Not because anything had been resolved.

Because, for a few hours, Noah had stopped treating his life like a problem he needed to solve before he could enjoy it.

When Adrian finally left, Noah walked him to the door.

”Thanks for coming.”

”Anytime.”

”I mean it.”

”I know.”

Noah hesitated.

”Do you think things will get better?”

Adrian looked at him.

”Eventually, some things will.”

”Some things?”

”I can’t promise you everything will.”

Noah shook his head, smiling faintly.

”You’re impossible.”

”So I’ve been told.”

They said goodbye.

Adrian walked down the stairs and stepped onto the pavement.

The sky had clouded over.

He opened the umbrella Lena had insisted he take.

Then he stood beneath it for several seconds, looking at the dry pavement.

She was going to be unbearable about this.

He could already hear her.

---

When Adrian returned home, Lena was reading on the sofa.

She glanced at the umbrella.

”See?”

”Not a drop of rain.”

”Yet.”

”You’re very committed to being right.”

”Someone in this apartment has to be.”

He closed the umbrella and placed it beside the door.

Then he sat next to her.

”How was Noah?” she asked.

”Lonely.”

Lena’s expression softened.

”Is he all right?”

”I think so. Not happy, exactly. But better.”

She nodded.

They sat together for a while, listening to the quiet sounds of the apartment.

Then Lena asked, ”Did you tell him everything would be fine?”

”No.”

”Good.”

Adrian looked at her.

”Why does everyone seem determined to stop me from comforting people?”

”Because you keep confusing comfort with promises.”

He leaned back.

”Is there a difference?”

”Of course.”

She closed her book.

”Comfort is sitting beside someone when things aren’t fine. A promise is telling them things will become fine, even when you don’t know that.”

Adrian considered this.

”I suppose that makes sense.”

”It does.”

”You’re very wise tonight.”

”I’m always wise.”

”That’s debatable.”

She nudged him with her shoulder.

He smiled and took her hand.

After a moment, he asked, ”Do you ever worry about people leaving?”

Lena looked at him.

”Of course.”

”Even now?”

”Especially now.”

He hadn’t expected that answer.

She rested her head against his shoulder.

”Loving someone doesn’t mean you stop being afraid of losing them. It just means the fear isn’t the only thing you feel.”

Adrian looked down at their joined hands.

He remembered all the times he had mistaken fear for a warning. All the times he had tried to prevent loss before it happened, believing that if he understood enough, he could make certain people stay.

He had been wrong.

People stayed because they chose to.

They left because they chose to.

And sometimes, no matter how much he loved someone, he wouldn’t be able to determine which they would do.

He couldn’t make that uncertainty disappear.

He could only decide how he wanted to live with it.

”I’m glad you’re here,” he said.

Lena squeezed his hand.

”Me too.”

They didn’t say anything else.

They didn’t need to.

Later, when Lena went to bed, Adrian remained on the sofa for a little longer.

His phone rested on the table.

There were no new messages from Mara. No updates from Noah. No strange letters or mysterious invitations.

For once, nobody needed him.

The realization was unexpectedly comforting.

He had spent so much time believing that being needed was proof that he mattered. If someone asked him for help, he had a purpose. If someone depended on him, he had a place in their life.

But there were evenings when the people he loved didn’t need him to do anything.

They didn’t need an answer.

They didn’t need advice.

They didn’t even need him to be particularly interesting.

They simply wanted him to be there.

And when they didn’t need him at all, he was still allowed to exist.

That was something he was learning slowly.

Perhaps more slowly than he should have.

But he was learning.

Adrian switched off the lamp and stood.

Tomorrow, he would probably make another mistake. Someone might disagree with him. A conversation might end badly. He might find himself trying to fix something that couldn’t be fixed.

He would deal with it when it happened.

For now, there was a bed waiting for him, a woman sleeping in the next room, and an umbrella that had successfully protected him from absolutely nothing.

He smiled to himself.

Then he went to bed.

Outside, the rain finally began to fall.

And for once, Adrian didn’t feel the need to know how long it would last.
