WHO SHOULD EXIST?

Adrian stared at the question.

Then at the second line.

YOU ANSWERED ONCE.

And finally—

ANSWER AGAIN.

His first instinct was to laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because after everything he had learned, the universe had somehow managed to make the biggest question sound like an exam.

He looked around the white room.

The Audience was there.

The first witness.

The woman.

Eve.

Cael’s forgotten possibilities.

Sol.

His brother.

People who had never existed.

People who had existed and been forgotten.

Versions of himself that had taken roads he never walked.

They were all watching.

For once, Adrian hated being the center of attention.

He looked toward Permission.

”Do I have to?”

Permission shook its head.

”No.”

Adrian blinked.

”That’s it?”

”That’s it.”

”You brought me here to answer a question.”

”No.”

Permission pointed toward the words.

”The question brought you here.”

Adrian looked back.

WHO SHOULD EXIST?

The letters remained still.

He slowly shook his head.

”I don’t like the question.”

The child smiled.

”Good.”

Adrian looked at him.

”Why is that good?”

”Because the first time, you answered without questioning it.”

Adrian frowned.

”You want me to question it.”

”I want you to choose.”

”There’s a difference.”

The child nodded.

”That’s why you’re here.”

Adrian took a breath.

”Fine.”

He looked at the question again.

”Who should exist?”

His mother wasn’t there.

His father wasn’t there.

Nobody from his family was physically beside him.

But Adrian could feel them.

Their voices.

Their memories.

The choices they had made.

He remembered his mother choosing him.

His father answering him.

Cael choosing to remember.

Echo choosing to stay.

Sol choosing to leave.

His brother choosing himself.

The Null choosing a single raindrop.

The forgotten child choosing to stay.

All of them had one thing in common.

Nobody had been told what they should become.

They had chosen.

Adrian looked toward the countless figures.

”Nobody should exist.”

Silence.

The Audience didn’t move.

The first witness stared.

Permission remained calm.

The child smiled.

Adrian continued.

”Nobody should have to exist.”

The words echoed.

”Nobody should be forced to exist.”

The white room trembled.

”Nobody should be created because someone decided they needed to be.”

The woman lowered her head.

Adrian looked at her.

”Nobody should have their life turned into an experiment.”

Then he looked toward the Audience.

”Nobody should have to perform just because someone is watching.”

One of the enormous eyes opened.

Adrian didn’t flinch.

”And nobody should be erased just because their existence became inconvenient.”

Cael’s forgotten possibilities moved.

Some of them looked at him.

Adrian took another step.

”So who should exist?”

He smiled.

”Anyone who chooses to.”

The room became completely silent.

Then the question changed.

WHO MAY CHOOSE?

Adrian frowned.

He already knew the answer.

”Everyone.”

The question changed again.

WHO DECIDES WHETHER THEY MAY?

Adrian looked toward Permission.

Then toward the First Choice.

Then toward the Audience.

”No one.”

The white room shook violently.

A crack opened beneath Adrian’s feet.

The countless figures began disappearing.

One by one.

Not being erased.

Released.

Possibilities that had spent eternity waiting for someone to decide whether they deserved to exist simply turned away.

Some walked.

Some flew.

Some vanished.

Some became stars.

Some became ideas.

Some became nothing.

And for the first time, Adrian understood.

They didn’t need him to choose for them.

They only needed permission to choose themselves.

The question disappeared.

In its place appeared a single word.

ACCEPTED.

Adrian stared.

Then another message appeared.

FIRST ANSWER: EXISTENCE.

SECOND ANSWER: FREEDOM.

Adrian smiled.

”That’s it?”

The child shook his head.

”No.”

A third line appeared.

THIRD ANSWER: CONSEQUENCE.

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

The white room darkened.

The countless freed possibilities stopped.

Something was coming.

Adrian felt it before he saw it.

A pressure.

Not the Audience.

Not Permission.

Not the Questioner.

Something else.

Something that didn’t belong to any layer Adrian had encountered.

The child stepped backward.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Adrian noticed.

”What is it?”

The child didn’t answer.

”Tell me.”

The child looked toward the darkness.

”It is what happens after an answer.”

Adrian’s expression tightened.

”Consequence?”

The child nodded.

A figure stepped out of the darkness.

It had no face.

No name.

No identity.

It looked like a person made from every consequence Adrian had ever caused.

Every choice.

Every mistake.

Every life changed because of him.

Every person he had saved.

Every person he had failed.

Every possibility he had abandoned.

All of it stood in one shape.

Adrian stared.

”What are you?”

The figure answered.

”I am what you owe.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

”I don’t owe existence anything.”

”You answered.”

”So?”

”An answer creates responsibility.”

Adrian shook his head.

”That’s not always true.”

”It is for you.”

”Why?”

”Because existence began with your answer.”

The figure stepped closer.

”Every life that came after is connected to it.”

Adrian looked around.

The freed possibilities had stopped.

They were watching again.

The figure raised its hand.

A scene appeared.

Adrian saw a world.

A peaceful world.

No war.

No hunger.

No death.

No suffering.

Every person had everything they wanted.

Adrian stared.

”What is this?”

”The first possibility.”

”First?”

”A world created from your answer.”

Adrian watched.

People smiled.

Families laughed.

Children played.

Nothing bad happened.

Then he noticed something.

Nobody was choosing.

They simply existed.

Their lives moved perfectly.

Every event happened exactly as expected.

Every relationship worked.

Every decision led to the correct outcome.

There was no loss.

No regret.

No uncertainty.

No freedom.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

”That’s not life.”

The figure nodded.

”Correct.”

Another world appeared.

This one was different.

People had complete freedom.

They could choose anything.

But every choice had consequences.

People hurt each other.

They failed.

They lost people.

They made mistakes.

Some choices created happiness.

Others created pain.

Adrian looked at it.

”That’s life.”

”Correct.”

Adrian understood.

Existence without choice was meaningless.

Choice without consequence was meaningless.

And consequence without freedom was punishment.

The three had to coexist.

Existence.

Freedom.

Consequence.

Adrian looked at the figure.

”So what do you want?”

”An answer.”

”To what?”

The figure pointed toward him.

”Should existence continue?”

Adrian stared.

That question again.

The oldest one.

The question that had started everything.

But this time, Adrian wasn’t alone in answering.

He looked at the people around him.

His mother.

His father.

Cael.

Echo.

Sol.

His brother.

The Null.

The forgotten child.

The first friend.

All the people who had made choices.

All the people who had suffered.

All the people who had loved. ℴ

He realized something.

He couldn’t answer for them.

Not anymore.

So Adrian turned toward the figure.

”I don’t know.”

The room went silent.

The figure tilted its head.

”You don’t know?”

”No.”

”Then answer.”

Adrian shook his head.

”I can’t.”

”Why?”

”Because it’s not my question anymore.”

The figure stared at him.

Adrian pointed toward the countless beings around them.

”If you want to know whether existence should continue, ask them.”

The figure remained silent.

Adrian smiled.

”I already answered once.”

He placed a hand against his chest.

”I said I wanted to exist.”

Then he looked around.

”But I don’t get to decide whether everyone else should.”

The child smiled.

Permission smiled.

Even the Audience seemed to change.

For the first time, the eyes weren’t watching Adrian.

They were watching everyone.

The figure slowly lowered its hand.

Then something unexpected happened.

It disappeared.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

It simply ceased to have a reason to remain.

The white room became bright.

A final message appeared.

THIRD ANSWER ACCEPTED.

Adrian waited.

Nothing happened.

He frowned.

”That’s it?”

Permission laughed.

”You’re disappointed?”

”A little.”

”You expected another monster.”

”I’ve been doing this for a while.”

The child laughed.

Adrian looked toward him.

”Can I ask something?”

”Yes.”

”Who are you?”

The child stared at him.

For a moment, he looked almost embarrassed.

”I don’t know.”

Adrian smiled.

”Fair.”

The child thought for a moment.

”Maybe that’s okay.”

Adrian nodded.

”Yeah.”

The white room began disappearing.

Adrian felt himself being pulled backward.

Before he vanished, he looked at Permission.

”Will I see you again?”

Permission smiled.

”Only if you ask.”

Adrian laughed.

”Of course.”

Then everything went white.

Adrian opened his eyes.

He was home.

His family was gathered around him.

His mother immediately hugged him.

His father stood beside them.

Cael looked relieved.

Echo was crying.

The Null was holding Adrian’s shirt.

His brother stood near the doorway.

Sol leaned against the wall.

Adrian looked around.

Everyone was there.

For once—

everyone.

He smiled.

”What happened?”

Cael asked.

Adrian thought about it.

”I answered.”

”Answered what?”

Adrian looked toward the window.

The sky was normal.

No eyes.

No cracks.

No symbols.

Just stars.

”The question.”

His mother smiled.

”Which one?”

Adrian looked at her.

”All of them.”

She laughed.

”That sounds like you.”

Adrian sat down.

For a while, nobody spoke.

Then his brother walked over.

”Adrian.”

”Yeah?”

”I remember something.”

Adrian looked at him.

”What?”

His brother hesitated.

”I remember leaving.”

Adrian smiled.

”You chose to leave.”

”Yes.”

”And?”

His brother looked around the room.

”I chose to come back.”

Adrian nodded.

”Then welcome home.”

His brother smiled.

The moment felt strangely ordinary.

And Adrian realized that was exactly what he wanted.

Not cosmic truth.

Not ancient mysteries.

Not endless observation.

Just this.

People choosing where they wanted to be.

People returning when they wanted.

People leaving when they needed to.

No one forcing them.

No one deciding for them.

Adrian looked at his family.

Maybe that was the answer.

Not who should exist.

Not why existence existed.

Not who created everything.

Maybe the answer was simply—

let them choose.

That night, Adrian went outside alone.

He looked at the stars.

Nothing watched him.

Or maybe something did.

He didn’t care.

For the first time, being watched didn’t change what he wanted to do.

He sat on the steps.

The door opened behind him.

His mother stepped outside.

”Can’t sleep?”

”No.”

She sat beside him.

”Thinking?”

”Always.”

She smiled.

”About what?”

Adrian looked toward the stars.

”I think I finally understand why I chose to stay.”

His mother waited.

”I didn’t stay because existence was good.”

He paused.

”I stayed because I wanted to find out.”

His mother leaned against him.

”And?”

Adrian smiled.

”I’m still finding out.”

They sat together.

The night passed quietly.

But far beyond the stars—

something watched.

Not the Audience.

Not the Questioner.

Something new.

Something that had learned from Adrian’s answer.

A single eye opened.

Then closed.

It didn’t judge.

It didn’t record.

It simply observed.

And somewhere beyond it, another voice whispered:

”Then the experiment is over.”

A second voice answered.

”No.”

A pause.

”The experiment was never the point.”

”Then what was?”

The answer came quietly.

”To see whether the answer would choose again.”

And somewhere inside Adrian’s sleeping mind—

a new door appeared.

This one had no handle.

No lock.

No symbol.

Only a single word written across it.

BEGIN.
