”WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE?”

The question hung above the ruined sky.

Adrian stared into the darkness.

For once, he didn’t have a clever answer.

No ancient memory surfaced.

No hidden door opened.

No message appeared in front of his eyes.

Nothing came to rescue him from the question.

He was simply standing on a hill with Eva and Eira while something beyond existence demanded an explanation for his life.

Honestly, he preferred the wooden toy.

At least that had instructions.

”Adrian,” Eva whispered.

He looked at her.

”Don’t answer it.”

”Why?”

”Because I don’t know what answering will do.”

”That’s reassuring.”

”I’m serious.”

”So am I.”

The darkness shifted.

The voice returned.

”WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE?”

Adrian looked up.

”I don’t know.”

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Eva closed her eyes.

Eira grabbed his arm.

But nothing happened.

The sky remained dark.

The voice said nothing.

Adrian waited.

Then he frowned.

”That’s it?”

Eva stared at him.

”You answered.”

”Yes.”

”And nothing happened.”

”Apparently.”

Eira slowly released his arm.

Adrian looked toward the sky.

”I don’t know who gave me the right to choose. I don’t know whether anyone did. But I chose anyway.”

The darkness rippled.

”You admit that you acted without permission?”

Adrian considered the question.

”Yes.”

Eva stepped forward.

”Adrian, stop.”

He glanced at her.

”I can’t keep refusing to speak just because I don’t know what the consequences will be.”

The voice became louder.

”THEN YOU ADMIT YOUR EXISTENCE WAS AN ACT OF DEFIANCE.”

Adrian frowned.

”No.”

”You acted without permission.”

”Yes.”

”You chose without authority.”

”Yes.”

”You changed what should have remained unchanged.”

Adrian paused.

”Maybe.”

The darkness pressed against the hill.

”THEN WHY SHOULD YOU BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE?”

Adrian looked at Eira.

She was trembling.

Not because the voice was loud.

Because she understood something he didn’t.

”What is it?” he asked quietly.

Eira shook her head.

”It wants you to justify your existence.”

Adrian looked back at the darkness.

”Why?”

”Because if you can justify it, then it can decide whether your answer was acceptable.”

Adrian went still.

He understood.

The question wasn’t really about permission.

It was about authority.

Someone had decided that every choice needed approval from something greater.

Every existence needed a reason.

Every person needed to prove that they deserved to remain.

Adrian had spent so long trying to answer the universe’s questions that he had forgotten something obvious.

He didn’t owe the universe a perfect explanation for wanting to live.

He looked up.

”I don’t have a justification.”

The darkness became still.

”I don’t know whether my existence was necessary. I don’t know whether it was planned. I don’t know whether someone wanted me to exist.”

He took a breath.

”But I want to.”

The hill shook.

”DESIRE IS NOT AUTHORITY.”

”I know.”

”CHOICE IS NOT PERMISSION.”

”I know.”

”EXISTENCE IS NOT A RIGHT YOU CAN GRANT YOURSELF.”

Adrian looked directly into the darkness.

”Then why are you asking me to defend it?”

For the first time, the voice stopped.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then something appeared above them.

A doorway.

Not a physical door.

A rectangular opening in the darkness.

Beyond it, Adrian saw a white room.

A table.

Two chairs.

And someone sitting in one of them.

He couldn’t see the person’s face.

The voice came from the doorway.

”COME.”

Eva immediately grabbed Adrian’s shoulder.

”No.”

Adrian looked at her.

”What is it?”

”I don’t know.”

”Eva.”

She swallowed.

”But I know what happens when someone enters a place where every choice must be justified.”

”What happens?”

”They stop choosing.”

Adrian looked at the doorway.

The person beyond it remained seated.

Waiting.

Eira stepped forward.

”I’ll go.”

Adrian turned toward her.

”No.”

She looked surprised.

”You don’t know what it is.”

”Neither do you.”

”But I’m the one who answered first.”

”And that doesn’t mean you have to answer for everyone else.”

Eira stared at him.

Adrian smiled faintly.

”You taught me something.”

”What?”

”That making the first choice doesn’t mean you own every choice that comes after.”

Eira’s expression softened.

For a moment, she looked as though she might cry.

Then she stepped back. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Adrian faced the doorway.

”I’m coming.”

Eva caught his arm again.

”Adrian, please.”

He looked at her.

”I don’t know what’s waiting in there.”

”Then why go?”

”Because it’s asking a question that affects everyone.”

He paused.

”And because I’m tired of letting fear decide where I can go.”

He stepped through.

The doorway closed behind him.

---

The room was smaller than he expected.

No endless corridors.

No cosmic machinery.

No impossible architecture.

Just a white room.

A table.

Two chairs.

And a man.

He looked ordinary.

Middle-aged.

Dark hair.

A tired face.

He wore a plain grey shirt.

There was nothing unusual about him.

Adrian almost felt disappointed.

After everything, he had expected something more impressive.

The man gestured toward the empty chair.

”Sit.”

Adrian remained standing.

”Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

”Does it matter?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because I prefer knowing who I’m talking to.”

The man smiled faintly.

”Then call me the Judge.”

Adrian stared.

”That’s a terrible name.”

”It isn’t a name.”

”That makes it worse.”

The man chuckled.

Adrian finally sat.

The Judge folded his hands.

”You have been asked to justify your existence.”

”Yes.”

”Do you understand why?”

”Because someone believes I had no right to choose.”

”Correct.”

”Do you?”

The Judge didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened a drawer and placed a sheet of paper on the table.

It contained a list of names.

Adrian recognized some.

His mother.

His father.

Cael.

Echo.

Sol.

Noah.

Nameless.

Lena.

Michael.

The Null.

At the bottom was his own name.

Adrian Cross.

Beside each name was a small empty box.

”What is this?”

”An assessment.”

”Of what?”

”Whether these individuals should have been allowed to exist.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

”Allowed by whom?”

”By the one who possesses the authority to determine whether existence should continue.”

”And that’s you?”

”No.”

The Judge pointed toward the empty chair opposite Adrian.

”That seat belongs to the one who asks the question.”

Adrian looked at it.

”Then where are they?”

The Judge’s expression became unreadable.

”You’re looking at the seat.”

Adrian stared.

The empty chair.

The place where someone should have been sitting.

He suddenly understood.

The question wasn’t coming from the Judge.

The Judge wasn’t the one demanding justification.

He was merely conducting an assessment on behalf of something else.

Something that didn’t need a body.

Something that had never needed to exist as a person.

Adrian looked at the list.

”Who made this assessment?”

”The question did.”

Adrian slowly raised his eyes.

”Questions don’t make things.”

”Most don’t.”

The Judge leaned forward.

”But some questions become the rules by which everything else is judged.”

Adrian looked at the empty chair.

”What happens if I fail?”

”Your existence will be reconsidered.”

”Meaning?”

”You will be removed from the sequence of events that followed your first answer.”

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

”Everyone I know?”

”Not necessarily.”

”Don’t lie to me.”

The Judge looked at him.

”Your mother would still have existed. Cael would still have existed. The worlds that emerged afterward might still have formed.”

He paused.

”But they would not have become what they are now.”

Adrian understood.

Without him, the people he loved would still have choices.

But their lives would be different.

The connections would be different.

Some might never meet.

Some might never become family.

Michael might never have become his friend.

Lena might never have left.

His mother might never have created him.

He looked at his name.

Then at the names beneath it.

”What happens if I pass?”

”You will be permitted to continue.”

Adrian laughed without humor.

”How generous.”

The Judge remained silent.

Adrian picked up the paper.

”Can I change the assessment?”

”No.”

”Can I refuse to participate?”

”You already did.”

Adrian looked at him.

”What?”

”The first time you answered the question of existence, you refused to justify your desire to live.”

The Judge tapped the paper.

”This is the consequence of that refusal.”

Adrian slowly put the paper down.

”So this is punishment.”

”No.”

”Then what is it?”

”An attempt to determine whether your choice was legitimate.”

Adrian leaned back.

”And if you decide it wasn’t?”

”Then the consequences will follow.”

Adrian looked at the empty chair.

Something bothered him.

The Judge was talking about authority.

Legitimacy.

Permission.

Consequences.

But he never said the question itself had the right to decide.

Adrian leaned forward.

”Can I ask you something?”

”Go ahead.”

”Who gave the question authority?”

The Judge stopped moving.

Adrian watched him carefully.

”Who decided that every existence had to justify itself?”

The Judge said nothing.

”Who decided that the question could judge the answer?”

Silence.

Adrian looked at the empty chair.

”Who gave it the right?”

The room trembled.

The Judge stood abruptly.

”Stop.”

Adrian didn’t.

”You asked me to justify my existence.”

The white walls began cracking.

”But you haven’t justified yours.”

The Judge’s expression changed.

For the first time, Adrian saw fear in his eyes.

Adrian stood.

”You’re judging me for choosing without permission.”

He pointed at the empty chair.

”Then tell me who gave permission to whoever sits there.”

The table disappeared.

The paper caught fire.

The empty chair remained.

And from somewhere beyond the room, a voice spoke.

Not the voice from the sky.

A different one.

A voice Adrian recognized.

His own.

But older.

Colder.

”Because someone had to decide.”

Adrian froze.

The Judge stepped back.

The voice continued.

”Someone had to decide which choices were allowed to exist.”

A figure appeared in the empty chair.

It looked exactly like Adrian.

But unlike the other versions he had encountered, this one wasn’t smiling.

It looked exhausted.

Angry.

Almost human.

Adrian stared at it.

”Who are you?”

The figure looked at him.

”I am the one who answered before you.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

The figure continued.

”And I am the reason you were never supposed to be the first.”

Adrian stepped closer.

”You’re Eira?”

The figure shook its head.

”No.”

It looked toward the empty space where the sky should have been.

”I am the answer that came before hers.”

Adrian stared.

”Then what was the question?”

The figure’s expression hardened.

It spoke three words.

”Who decides existence?”

The room collapsed into darkness.

And the figure reached toward Adrian.

”You were never supposed to answer that question.”

Its hand closed around Adrian’s wrist.

”You were supposed to leave it unanswered.”

For the first time since the beginning, Adrian felt something he couldn’t explain.

Not fear of losing himself.

Not fear of losing someone he loved.

Fear that the entire life he had fought to protect had begun with a mistake nobody had ever been allowed to question.

The figure leaned closer.

”And now, Adrian Cross, you must answer for the one choice you were never meant to make.”

The darkness swallowed them both.

Outside the room, Eva and Eira stood beneath the broken sky.

The doorway had vanished.

Eira looked at Eva.

”Did he find it?”

Eva nodded.

”Yes.”

Eira closed her eyes.

”And now?”

Eva stared into the darkness.

”Now we find out whether the first answer was ever allowed to exist.”

Far away, in a room that had never belonged to any world, Adrian opened his eyes.

The figure wearing his face sat opposite him.

Between them lay a single sheet of paper.

On it was written one question.

WHO SHOULD HAVE ANSWERED FIRST?
