The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Gu Jiaojiao asked Leng Yuan to go to the cellar and get some pork and cured meat.

The pork had been bought.

Because of the busy farming season, Leng Yuan had gone to the County Town before it began. He used up half a year’s worth of meat ration coupons to buy five catties of pork.

Gu Jiaojiao had made the cured meat herself during the winter. You only had to make it once a year, and as long as it was prepared properly, it wouldn’t spoil.

But in later generations, experts would say you couldn’t eat a lot of things. This was bad for you, that was bad for you. Yet people in the past ate these things their whole lives and never seemed to have any problems.

Gu Jiaojiao then had someone go to the backyard and pick a few chili peppers.

She minced the pork, seasoned it, sliced the chili peppers into sections, and then stuffed the filling inside.

There were still plenty of edible things to be found in the mountains at this time of year, so even with just a little preparation, Gu Jiaojiao had a lot of food.

Just then, Chen JianShe came over. ”Sister-in-law, you’ve prepared so much food today. Isn’t it a bit too much?”

Gu Jiaojiao replied casually, ”Not at all. I’m planning to invite a few friends over to eat with us.”

”Then, well...” Chen JianShe stammered for a long time, but couldn’t get the words out.

Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t help but look at Chen JianShe.

The six-foot-tall young man was scuffing the ground with the toe of his shoe, his hands clasped together in an awkward posture.

’Something’s up,’ she thought.

’Could it be he’s taken a liking to some girl?’

Although Gu Jiaojiao had no interest in playing matchmaker, Chen JianShe was Leng Yuan’s brother and was on good terms with their family. If he really did like a girl, Gu Jiaojiao would be happy for him.

After a moment of fidgeting, Chen JianShe finally spoke.

”Sister-in-law, do you think Chen Zhiqing... might like me?”

Chen Ruoyu?

’I didn’t expect the girl Chen JianShe likes to be Chen Ruoyu,’ Gu Jiaojiao thought.

It was just that Chen Ruoyu was an educated youth.

There was nothing wrong with that status. On the contrary, Chen Ruoyu was well-read and had a good personality.

However, educated youth were expected to return to the cities eventually. Plus, the college entrance exams were next year. If she really were to marry Chen JianShe, her family might not agree to her taking the exam in the future.

She hadn’t lived through this era herself, but she knew that quite a few people had abandoned their spouses and children for the sake of the college entrance exams.

For a moment, Gu Jiaojiao didn’t say anything.

Seeing Gu Jiaojiao’s silence, Chen JianShe scratched his head.

’What’s going on? It seems like I keep offending people today,’ he thought.

’First I offended Brother Leng, and now I’ve offended Sister-in-law, too?’

After a moment’s thought, Chen JianShe decided to apologize first.

”Sister-in-law, did I make you angry? I’m sorry.”

Gu Jiaojiao snapped back to the present. ’Anyway, things haven’t gotten to that point yet. Maybe Chen Ruoyu doesn’t even like Chen JianShe!’

’Why worry about it unnecessarily?’

”I’m not angry.”

”Actually, I was planning on inviting Chen Zhiqing over for dinner today anyway. Why don’t you go get her for me?”

She had been planning to invite Chen Ruoyu over all along.

When people had been gossiping about her before, Chen Ruoyu had often spoken up for her, making a few enemies in the process. For this barbecue, she wanted to invite not only Chen Ruoyu, but also the team leader and the Xu Brothers.

When it comes to barbecue, the more the merrier.

She could also ask Chen Ruoyu what she thought after the meal.

As for returning to the city and the college entrance exams, as long as the two of them liked and understood each other, she believed those issues could be resolved.

’In life, everything is a small matter, except for life and death.’

A look of joy spread across Chen JianShe’s face. He said a quick goodbye to Gu Jiaojiao and then took off running, full of youthful energy and drive. Though he wasn’t a dashing hero on a fine steed, he still had the vibrant spirit of youth.

Gu Jiaojiao had Leng Yuan go invite the Xu Brothers, and told him to also call on the team leader, as well as Zhao Tiezhu and his wife, on his way back.

With everyone gone, Gu Jiaojiao went back to the yard to pick a few cucumbers.

Just as she reached the backyard, she spotted Jiang Baishu standing in the distance with a girl. The faint sound of their conversation drifted over.
