The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Gu Jiaojiao looked at Yu Fangfang’s belly.

”You must be about to give birth, Fangfang!”

Yu Fangfang nodded, stroking her belly affectionately. ”Yes! My due date is in January.”

It was already the twelfth lunar month, so there was only one month to go.

”How about I check your pulse?”

Yu Fangfang’s eyes lit up.

Gu Jiaojiao knew medicine and was very skilled. The last time Yu Fangfang almost had a miscarriage, her baby would have been lost if not for Gu Jiaojiao’s help.

But from Gu Jiaojiao’s demeanor, it seemed she didn’t want to broadcast her medical skills, so Yu Fangfang hadn’t kept asking for her help.

Now that Gu Jiaojiao had offered on her own, Yu Fangfang looked as if she had struck gold.

”That would be wonderful. I’d feel so much more at ease if you checked my pulse.”

Gu Jiaojiao had Yu Fangfang hold out her hand. She placed her fingers on Yu Fangfang’s wrist, feeling the left one first, then the right.

”Fangfang, where are you planning to give birth?”

In the countryside, people usually just found a midwife to deliver at home.

Yu Fangfang simply replied, ”At home.”

”Is there a problem?”

Gu Jiaojiao shook her head. ”It’s nothing serious, but the baby is on the larger side, and your body is weak, lacking vital energy and blood. Giving birth at home would be a bit dangerous. I suggest you go to the hospital.”

To be frank, the baby was large and the mother’s body was weak, which could easily lead to a crisis. If something unexpected were to happen, they could treat her immediately at the hospital.

If she gave birth at home and there was an emergency, she’d lose precious time getting to the hospital.

Yu Fangfang’s face turned a little pale.

Gu Jiaojiao comforted her, ”This is quite common, so don’t worry too much. It’s normal for a large baby to be difficult to deliver. Going to the hospital is just a precaution.”

Yu Fangfang nodded and thanked Gu Jiaojiao gratefully.

Then, remembering her reason for coming, she asked, a little embarrassed, ”Actually, I came here to ask if you have any brown sugar ration tickets. I’d like to buy some from you.”

Yu Fangfang was indeed a bit sheepish.

Brown sugar tickets were scarce these days, and everyone wanted them. People who had them were reluctant to part with them, saving them in case they were needed for an emergency.

But since no one in her family had a formal job, her only option was to ask acquaintances.

Gu Jiaojiao didn’t mind. She thought for a moment. ”I do. I’ll go get them for you.”

The last time Leng Yuan’s manuscript payment arrived, it had included some ration tickets—all for scarce pastries and brown sugar. Leng Yuan had specifically requested them.

But she had made a lot of brown sugar herself before and didn’t eat it often, so she still had plenty and hadn’t paid much mind to the tickets.

”How many do you need, Fangfang?”

”Would two pounds be possible?”

For the month-long postpartum confinement, two pounds of brown sugar would be about right.

Gu Jiaojiao rummaged around and took out two brown sugar tickets.

Each one was for a pound, making two pounds in total.

”Here you go, Fangfang.”

Gu Jiaojiao placed the brown sugar tickets on the table, and Yu Fangfang’s eyes filled with gratitude.

”Jiaojiao, thank you so much.”

With that, she quickly pulled money out of her pocket.

”On the market, a ticket goes for one-fifty. I’ll give you one-fifty for each, how does that sound?”

Gu Jiaojiao nodded. That was perfectly fine.

Yu Fangfang hurriedly took out the money.

Even at one-fifty a ticket, they were incredibly hard to come by. Some people were willing to pay even more just to get some.

Gu Jiaojiao accepted the three yuan from Yu Fangfang, and the women sat in the room chatting.

As they talked, the conversation turned to Xu Wenwan.

The two women were both exasperated with their young sister-in-law and couldn’t help but vent to Gu Jiaojiao.

Gu Jiaojiao listened with great interest. She hadn’t expected that Xu Wenwan had actually been beaten so badly that she was bedridden.
