The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Chapter 62: Chapter 60: Counting Family Treasures

Gu Jiaojiao listed the things they needed to prepare for the New Year one by one, rattling them off as if she had gone over the list a thousand times.

She recited each item as if she knew them by heart.

This picture of a virtuous wife and loving mother left Leng Yuan in a bit of a daze.

It seemed as though she truly intended to build a life with him now.

At this thought, he couldn’t help but look at Gu Jiaojiao.

He realized that ever since the night she drugged him, Gu Jiaojiao had changed.

”Jiaojiao.”

”Hm?”

Gu Jiaojiao, who was in the middle of figuring out how many corn stalks to buy, looked up when she heard Leng Yuan speak.

”I caught three rabbits and five pheasants today, and I also found several nests of wild eggs. I gave Chen JianShe one rabbit and two pheasants, but I kept the eggs. There are over twenty of them under the shed. I’ll clean the game in a bit. What are you planning to make with them?”

When Gu Jiaojiao heard there was meat to eat, her face lit up with a smile. ”I picked a lot of mushrooms on the mountain today. We can have pheasant stew with mushrooms for dinner. I’ll go ask Aunt Zhao to trade for a few potatoes to add in. That should be enough for us.”

Leng Yuan had no objections. ”Sounds good.”

But before Gu Jiaojiao could leave for Aunt Zhao’s house, Chen JianShe arrived, wearing a raincoat and carrying a few potatoes and radishes.

He didn’t stay long, just dropped off the items and left.

Gu Jiaojiao knew the two had a good relationship, so she didn’t stand on ceremony.

Just as Chen JianShe left, the Brigade Leader arrived, wearing a straw raincoat.

His pants were rolled up to his knees, and he wore straw sandals on his feet.

”Leng Yuan, the newspaper office called me. They’re rushing you for your manuscript!”

The fact that Leng Yuan submitted articles to the newspaper and magazines every month was something only the Brigade Leader and Chen JianShe knew in the entire village.

Sometimes, when Leng Yuan wasn’t around, the Brigade Leader or Chen JianShe would sign for his mail.

And so, to save on phone fees, the newspaper office had contacted the Brigade Leader directly.

The Brigade Leader had immediately come to notify him.

Gu Jiaojiao was at a loss for words.

’So even back in these times, editors were already hounding writers for their manuscripts.’

Leng Yuan grunted in acknowledgment.

The Brigade Leader’s eyes crinkled with a smile. ”Keep up the good work. This is the kind of gig countless people would kill for.”

”Mail it out in the next couple of days. They’re waiting to publish it!”

The Brigade Leader gave Leng Yuan a few more instructions.

Leng Yuan went to the shed, picked up a pheasant, and offered it to the Brigade Leader, but the Brigade Leader wouldn’t take it.

”Keep it for yourself!”

Despite his words, he couldn’t help but swallow hard.

It couldn’t be helped. In these times, it was hard enough to get enough grain to eat, let alone meat.

Everyone craved it.

Gu Jiaojiao suddenly felt much better about her own cravings.

She wasn’t the only one who craved meat so badly.

Leng Yuan was momentarily speechless.

’Why did Chen Beiguo’s expression just now look a little like Gu Jiaojiao’s?’

Without taking no for an answer, he thrust it into the Brigade Leader’s hands.

Seeing Leng Yuan’s insistence, Chen Beiguo finally accepted it.

”Well then, I’ll take it. You get back to your work. I’m off!”

With that, he left with the pheasant.

Normally, the Brigade Leader wouldn’t have dared to carry it home so openly, but since it was raining, there was no one on the road to see him.

Although whatever you brought back from the mountain was yours to keep.

It was still best to avoid being seen by others.

Otherwise, it would be easy to attract jealousy.

After the Brigade Leader left, Leng Yuan went to clean the rabbits and pheasants, leaving Gu Jiaojiao with nothing to do.

Only then did Leng Yuan speak.

”Jiaojiao, my manuscript is finished. Could you proofread it for typos for me?”

”If there are no problems, I’ll take it to the County Town tomorrow to mail it.”

Gu Jiaojiao didn’t think it was a big deal and nodded in agreement.

Leng Yuan told Gu Jiaojiao the manuscript was in the left drawer of the desk, then focused on cleaning the rabbits.

Gu Jiaojiao went back to the room and looked at the tidy desk. This was the first time she had ever opened Leng Yuan’s drawer.

It was something rather private, and Gu Jiaojiao normally wouldn’t touch his things without permission.

The last time, when Leng Yuan had held her on his lap, was the closest she had ever been to his desk.

Thinking of the man’s taut thighs and arms, which held boundless strength, Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t help but blush.

She took a deep breath and opened the drawer.

Inside the drawer were neat stacks of folded paper. On the very top, Gu Jiaojiao saw the manuscript Leng Yuan had mentioned.
