The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Chapter 54: Chapter 52: An Agreement to Go Up the Mountain

Seeing Chen JianShe let out a huge sigh of relief, Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t help but find it amusing.

”Even if it does rain, it won’t be your fault. Otherwise, you could just say ’get rich’ and money would appear out of nowhere.”

At this, Chen JianShe immediately deflated. ”I wish I could really get rich. But doing farm work every day, where’s the opportunity for that?”

He had hated farm work since he was a child and had gotten countless scoldings from his mother for it. But there was nothing he could do; he was just born with a dislike for it.

Right now, for instance, he felt completely drained.

With this in mind, Chen JianShe looked at his Brother Leng. ”Brother Leng, if it doesn’t rain, should we go up the mountain this afternoon?”

’I’m really craving some meat.’

Gu Jiaojiao was a little worried. ”Won’t it be dangerous?”

Leng Yuan shook his head. ”It won’t be. If it starts raining, we’ll just come down the mountain right away. And don’t worry, even if it rains too hard for us to get down, we can just wait for it to stop before heading back.”

He went up the mountain year-round and had encountered every kind of situation. As long as heavy snows didn’t seal off the paths, there wouldn’t be a problem.

Once Leng Yuan agreed to go up the mountain that afternoon, Chen JianShe finally went home in high spirits.

After Chen JianShe left, Leng Yuan spoke up.

”Let’s head back.”

Gu Jiaojiao nodded, and the two of them left together.

Everyone dispersed, and the people from the educated youth dormitory went back as well.

As they were leaving, Gu Jiaojiao and Leng Yuan happened to walk along the path right in front of Yun Hao.

Seeing Gu Jiaojiao’s smile, as radiant as a flower, Yun Hao’s gaze lingered on her face. He couldn’t quite put a finger on the feeling in his heart, but it felt heavy and stifling.

The team captain, who had been frowning all day, was now all smiles.

As long as all the grain was safely in the granary, he had nothing left to worry about.

He said a few brief words and then dismissed the remaining people.

The people of the Qingshan Team all did the exact same thing. After washing up, they all skipped their meals and collapsed into bed to sleep.

Gu Jiaojiao and Leng Yuan did the same.

After a long, tiring night, they were now utterly exhausted.

It was the same at the team captain’s house. He got home, lay down on his bed, and was soon fast asleep.

But he hadn’t been asleep for long when a loud banging echoed from his front door.

The sound was deafening, jolting the team captain awake in an instant.

The team captain got up, scowling. ’I’ll see who this is. If they don’t have a good reason for this, I swear I’ll beat them senseless.’

When he pulled the door open and saw the person outside, he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. But after rubbing them, the person was still there, so he couldn’t help but speak.

”Li Dashan, aren’t you busy with the Qiushou in your own team? What are you doing here?”

This was Li Dashan, the captain of the neighboring Li Jiawan Team. He held the same position as Captain Chen, and the two often sat together during commune meetings. They were old acquaintances.

As a matter of fact, most people in the Li Jiawan Team had the surname Li—over half of them, in fact. Similarly, over half the people in his own team had the surname Chen.

Of course, there were other surnames too. For instance, the village’s Party Secretary was surnamed Xu, and Leng Yuan was surnamed Leng. There were others, but they were less common.

Li Dashan grinned, showing a mouthful of white teeth. ”Captain Chen, I heard your village developed a thresher. I made a special trip to come take a look.”

Li Dashan was drenched in sweat from his bike ride, a clear sign that he had rushed over the moment he heard the news.

With the weather looking grim, he was terrified he wouldn’t be able to get his team’s grain harvested in time. The second he heard about a thresher over here, he hopped on his bike and came straight away.

He had been pedaling for dear life the entire way.

”Ah, that...”

The moment Chen Beiguo saw Li Dashan, he knew what he was here for. But he had no intention of letting the man off easy.

The last time the commune handed out pig-raising quotas, this guy had fought the hardest for them, completely disregarding their bond as comrades.

And it was precisely because of that incident that Li Jiawan got to raise pigs while the Qingshan Team did not.

So now, he hesitated, deciding to play hard to get.

Captain Chen could afford to be patient, but Li Dashan could not. Staring at the gloomy sky, not knowing when the rain would start, he didn’t dare take any chances.

”Old Chen, for the sake of our many years of friendship, you can’t just stand by and watch me suffer! We’re talking about grain here. If we can’t get it harvested, people are going to starve.”

His words moved Captain Chen.

”Alright, alright. Don’t say I never do anything for you. I’ll take you over to ask about it now. But you should know, the thresher doesn’t belong to the team. One of our villagers developed it themselves.”
