The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Chapter 32: Chapter 30: Chen JianShe Was Envious

The two of them had just finished eating when the whistle to start work blew.

The corn harvest was finished, leaving only the soybeans and rice in the fields. Today, they would either be harvesting soybeans or reaping rice.

There was also lighter work: going to the threshing ground to shell the corn. Compared to the labor in the fields, the tasks at the threshing ground were a bit easier.

For the past two days, as the corn was being harvested, people at the threshing ground were shucking it. The husks could be distributed to each household to be used for starting cooking fires in the winter.

The corn stalks could also be burned for fuel, and everyone scrambled to get them.

These were all valuable resources and weren’t just given away; they had to be distributed according to work points.

But that was all for later. Today was Gu Jiaojiao’s first day of work. As she and Leng Yuan left their house, they ran into many villagers along the way. Everyone stared, their eyes wide with shock, seeing Gu Jiaojiao and Leng Yuan walking together.

Gu Jiaojiao had been in Qingshan Team for over half a month and had never once worked in the fields. ’Is she actually going to work today?’

None of this affected Leng Yuan, however. When the villagers saw him, they would call out greetings, and he would respond in kind. If they met an elder, Leng Yuan would even take the initiative to greet them first.

As for Gu Jiaojiao, she was completely ignored.

But she didn’t mind. She just calmly followed beside Leng Yuan on the way to work.

When they arrived at the work site, the Team Leader first gave a short speech before assigning tasks.

When his eyes landed on Gu Jiaojiao, he was surprised for a moment. But then he figured that perhaps marrying Leng Yuan had made her realize she needed to contribute to their livelihood, so he even made a point of praising her.

This unexpected praise made Gu Jiaojiao feel quite bashful, but thankfully, she kept her composure, her expression remaining perfectly calm.

Seeing how composed Gu Jiaojiao was, the crowd couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration.

After finishing his praise, the Team Leader assigned Gu Jiaojiao to the threshing ground.

Shelling corn was a simple job; even a seven or eight-year-old child could do it. At worst, she would just be a little slow and earn fewer work points, which wasn’t a big deal.

Gu Jiaojiao and Leng Yuan were assigned to different tasks. Before they parted, Leng Yuan handed her a pair of gloves. ”Don’t push yourself too hard. Rest if you get tired.”

He could afford to support her even if she earned fewer work points.

Nearby, Chen Jianshe was filled with envy. ’Brother Leng is way too good to his wife,’ he thought. ’If I were a woman, I’d want to marry Brother Leng too. Then I could slack off.’

During this Qiushou, he had been worked to the bone. He wished he could be more like Gu Jiaojiao and just feign illness to skip work.

But few people had the nerve to do that.

A single work point was equivalent to a handful of grain. Whether you could eat your fill next year depended entirely on the work points you earned this year.

If you weren’t willing to work hard, you’d have no grain, and you could literally starve to death.

Besides, he wasn’t willing to stop working and resort to petty theft like the loafers and delinquents in the village.

With these thoughts, Chen Jianshe’s gaze toward Gu Jiaojiao grew even more envious.

Gu Jiaojiao was so moved her heart felt as turbulent as Chen Jianshe’s. But since she had already decided to change everyone’s impression of her, she certainly wasn’t going to slack off.

”Don’t worry about me. I won’t get tired.”

Hearing this, Chen Jianshe felt that his Brother Leng’s worry was completely unnecessary.

’Who didn’t know about Gu Jiaojiao?’ he thought. ’Despite her beauty, not a single man in the entire village dared to marry her and bring her home as a wife.’

’Why?’

’She was too lazy.’

’These days, when every household was short on grain, marrying a lazy wife who did nothing but eat and drink—wasn’t that just asking for disaster?’

For this very reason, even though Gu Jiaojiao had been here for less than a month, her reputation had already hit rock bottom.

Of course, Chen Jianshe would never say any of this out loud.

As for Leng Yuan, one look at the young woman’s earnest eyes told him she wouldn’t slack off.

He was surprised that a person could change as much as Gu Jiaojiao had.

’The person who was once lazy, cunning, and sharp-tongued—how could she have transformed in the blink of an eye?’

’He used to get annoyed just by seeing Gu Jiaojiao. Now, he actually found himself worrying that she couldn’t handle the intensity of farm work and was patiently giving her advice.’

’This would have been absolutely impossible before.’

”Sister-in-law, you’re so lucky.”

Chen Jianshe was incredibly envious. It was great to have someone dote on you.

He couldn’t help but wonder if he should find a wife to come home and dote on him.

Gu Jiaojiao noticed Chen Jianshe’s gaze and couldn’t help but find it amusing.

Chen Jianshe had a good relationship with Leng Yuan, so naturally, Leng Yuan often pushed him to improve himself. Under Leng Yuan’s influence, Chen Jianshe’s future achievements would also be quite impressive.

’However, since he was a supporting character with even less of a role than Leng Yuan, the author only mentioned him briefly,’ she recalled. ’When the male and female leads went to a business conference, Chen Jianshe went along with Leng Yuan.’

’At that time, the story simply mentioned his accomplishment: he was the boss of a cosmetics company.’
