The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Chapter 29: Chapter 27: Zhao Tiezhu Pays a Visit to Give Thanks

Leng Yuan told Gu Jiaojiao to continue eating. He was going outside to check.

But Gu Jiaojiao didn’t. She put down her bowl and chopsticks, waiting for Leng Yuan to come back so they could eat together.

”Jiaojiao, come out here for a second.”

Not long after Leng Yuan went outside, he called Gu Jiaojiao’s name.

It was the first time Gu Jiaojiao had heard Leng Yuan call her so familiarly. Her heart gave a little flutter, and she walked outside.

At the doorway stood Zhao Tiezhu, holding a bag of pastries and a basket of eggs. Leng Yuan was standing beside him.

As Gu Jiaojiao walked over, Zhao Tiezhu held out the gifts to her. ”Gu... Gu Zhiqing, I really have you to thank for what happened today. If it weren’t for you, Xiuhua definitely would have lost the baby. This is just a small token of my appreciation.”

Zhao Tiezhu and Wang Xiuhua had a very good relationship, and he cherished his wife dearly. His wife had gone to stay with her family for a few days and had come back on her own today without telling him. Unexpectedly, she wasn’t paying attention and tripped on a stone. Because she was trying to protect her stomach, she twisted her body as she fell, which was how she ended up falling on her leg and dislocating it.

If it weren’t for Gu Jiaojiao, he couldn’t bear to imagine the consequences. It was the middle of the Qiushou harvest, and every production brigade was busy bringing in the crops, so there was hardly anyone on the roads. If no one had seen her, he might have lost both his wife and his child.

The debt of gratitude was so immense that not only had he brought all the eggs they had at home, but he had also gone out of his way to buy pastries to bring over.

Gu Jiaojiao hurriedly refused.

”All I did was run back and pass on the message; I didn’t really do much to help. You don’t have to be so kind. Your wife is about to give birth, so you should take these eggs back for her!”

But Zhao Tiezhu wouldn’t take them back. ”A favor is a favor,” he insisted. ”You must accept these.”

Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t good at handling these kinds of situations, so she instinctively glanced at Leng Yuan. He took the pastries from Zhao Tiezhu’s hands but pushed the basket of eggs back toward him.

”We’ll accept the pastries, but we can’t take the eggs. Please take them back. Otherwise, we won’t accept anything at all.”

When Zhao Tiezhu heard this from Leng Yuan, he thanked them profusely again before finally leaving.

Gu Jiaojiao breathed a sigh of relief.

”He was so insistent.”

Leng Yuan chuckled. ”Nice work.”

With that, he ruffled Gu Jiaojiao’s hair. ”The Zhao family are good people. It would be good to stay on friendly terms with them.”

’By only accepting the pastries, the Zhao family will still feel grateful to Gu Jiaojiao. If she ever needs anything in the future, they’ll be willing to help.’

Gu Jiaojiao nodded obediently. ’She didn’t know the villagers well, but Leng Yuan did. If he said they should stay in touch, then they would.’

’Besides, seeing how much Zhao Tiezhu cared for Wang Xiuhua... A man who loves his wife can’t be all that bad.’

Taking advantage of the moment, Gu Jiaojiao brought up the fish. Upon hearing this, Leng Yuan replied, ”Since they brought it over, we should just accept it.”

”That’s from Uncle Chen’s family. They’re from the same clan as Chen JianShe—even Chen JianShe has to call him Uncle Chen. The boy who delivered the fish is his eldest son’s grandson. He’s in my class, in the eighth grade.”

Leng Yuan explained in detail, and Gu Jiaojiao listened intently. ’If they were going to make a good life here, she had to become a part of the village. The more she understood, the better she’d know how to act.’

’From what Leng Yuan was saying, it seemed Uncle Chen’s family were also people they could be friendly with. She made a mental note of it.’

The incidents with Zhao Tiezhu and Uncle Chen’s family were just a brief interlude. Soon, the two of them were sitting at the dinner table again.

The dining table was a small square table, not very large, but just the right size for two.

Leng Yuan took a sip of the soup. It was incredibly savory—the best he had ever tasted.

’Although it had only been two short days, he was already gaining a profound appreciation for Gu Jiaojiao’s cooking. They were the same simple ingredients, yet whatever she made was exceptionally delicious—even better than the food at the state-run restaurants.’
