Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Originally, Qu Xiaoli meant to give Jing Chu the same things as Wang Menglin. A sewing machine, a radio and all that, all to her. But Xiang Dong refused.

”Dad, the money I earn, the family has never taken any of it, so you don’t need to spend money on me. Just leave it for my younger brothers. When they need money in the future, I’ll definitely chip in too.”

”Xiang Dong, that’s not the same.” Qu Xiaoli sighed. She didn’t want Jing Chu to feel she treated her two daughters-in-law differently.

”Mom, there’s nothing different about it, this is also what Jing Chu wants. This year we can still go back to the Capital early, she’ll go together with me. Those things you’re preparing for us, we won’t even need them.”

Qu Xiaoli sighed. She understood, she just felt uncomfortable inside. Of course it was good that her son was capable, but precisely because of that, her son wouldn’t stay by her side.

”Mom, in the future our whole family will move to the Capital to live together.”

The others all kept quiet. Changhe and Cheng Lin both knew very well in their hearts that Eldest Brother and Second Brother had this kind of life purely on their own ability. Since their older brothers could do it, then they could too.

So they weren’t greedy for their brothers’ things; they were certain they themselves wouldn’t turn out badly in the future.

”Alright, if we’re not buying, then we’re not buying. It really isn’t of any use at home anyway. We’ll just pool it into cash and give it to you. This is what your mom and I earned; it’s only right to spend it on getting a wife for our son.”

”Dad, I’ve got more money in my hands than you do. We don’t want it. There’ll be plenty of places in the family that need money later on. You doing this makes me feel bad.”

Meng Lin didn’t say a single word. In fact she thought the same way as Xiang Dong. The money the old couple earned was theirs. They were still young; if they wanted anything, they should earn it themselves. Besides, right now the three of them were all being supported by the elders. The money the two of them earned as a couple, they didn’t even give it to their parents-in-law and let her keep it herself.

In the end, Li Yungui let out a sigh. ”Alright then. Just work hard on your own. If you need money in the future, just tell us.”

Today Jing Chu was eating at the Wei Family’s. Her heart was a mess. Xiang Dong’s plan was that tomorrow, the first day of the twelfth lunar month, the two of them would go get their marriage certificate.

It was only now that she started feeling uncertain inside.

Jiang Xinyu looked at the distracted Jing Chu and knew she was scared.

After dinner, they went back to the room.

”Stop overthinking. Right now, Xiang Dong is absolutely the most suitable person for you.”

”But what if he changes in the future?”

”Don’t you trust him?”

”Aunt Jiang, it’s not that I don’t trust him. I don’t trust time. I’m afraid we’ll both change.”

”That’s exactly what’s normal, isn’t it? If you don’t change, how is that a life? As long as the two of you keep each other in your hearts, then even if you change, the feelings between you won’t change.”

”But what if he falls out of love?”

”Jing Chu, can you guarantee that you yourself absolutely won’t fall out of love?”

”I can.”

”Then if you ask Xiang Dong, he’ll firmly tell you he won’t either.”

Jing Chu stopped talking at that.

”Those are all just possibilities in the future. The two of you need to trust each other.

Silly girl. Don’t think too much, and don’t think too far. Just hold on tight to the present.”

”Yeah, I get it. Who knows what the future will be like? As long as Xiang Dong treats me well right now, that’s enough.”

”Silly girl, life is something you live through, and a couple’s feelings are something you both have to work at together. You have to firmly believe that the two of you will be happy for a lifetime.”

This girl was going to get her certificate tomorrow, and only now she was starting to feel lost and scared. Well, that was how it was. Women are all like this, aren’t they.

The next day, Xiang Dong drove there. The two of them brought all the paperwork from the village. They just needed to go to the educated youth office to get an approval letter.

”Jing Chu, you have to trust me.”

”Alright, Xiang Dong, I trust you.” Dad and her older brothers all had happy lives now; she definitely could too.

She had figured it out. Yes. She was sure she would be happy, living a happy life with Xiang Dong for the rest of her days.

Xiang Dong got the marriage certificate and his face was all smiles. He didn’t even know how to express his excitement and joy right now, so he just kept grinning stupidly.

”Okay, stop smiling like that. You look so silly.” Jing Chu laughed and shot Xiang Dong a sideways look.

The two of them sat in the car, and Xiang Dong suddenly turned and wrapped his arms around Jing Chu. ”Wife, now I’m your legal husband. And you’re my legal wife.”

”Right, we’re a legally married couple.”

”Okay, let’s go home.”

”Mm, let’s go home. Red Army still has to drive over to pick up Uncle’s whole family.”

The two of them reached the township. ”Xiang Dong, is that Xiang Dong?”

”It really is.”

Xiang Dong stopped the car. ”Xiang Dong!”

”You two are...?”

”We went to get our certificate. You heading home? Get in the car.”

”Yeah, I’m taking my fiancée home for a visit. When’s your wedding? I just got back the day before yesterday.”

”Tomorrow. You’ve come back at just the right time.”

”Congratulations to you two. This is my fiancée, Zhou Mengqian. Mengqian, this is my Second Uncle’s second son, the same age as me. This is Second Sister-in-law, the village’s educated youth.”

At this point Xiang Dong and Jing Chu both got out of the car.

Zhou Mengqian saw Jing Chu and was genuinely envious inside. How could she be this pretty? Xiang Dong looked quite good too. The two of them standing together really looked well-matched.

Zhou Mengqian smiled and greeted them as Second Brother and Second Sister-in-law.

”Hahaha, Comrade Zhou, you’re the first one to call her Second Sister-in-law.”

”Alright, let’s get in the car.”

Xiang Dong truly hadn’t known Xiang Dong was getting married. He was always running around outside; ever since the last time he came back, he hadn’t been back again.

These past few years out there, he was no longer that fool he used to be. And his mindset was much calmer now too.

All the way back it was Xiang Dong talking excitedly. He just couldn’t rein it in, and only by talking nonstop could he calm himself down.

When they reached the village, Xiang Dong parked directly at Fourth Uncle’s door. Only then did he drive off to drop Jing Chu home.

Xiang Dong and Mengqian pushed the door open and went inside. This was the first time Xiang Dong had come to the new house.

The yard was especially tidy, swept very clean, and the glass windows in the house were bright.

Yue Lanfeng heard the commotion and thought it was Li Yunqiang coming back; she didn’t look closely. She was in the middle of making clothes for her son. Tomorrow was Xiang Dong’s big wedding day; all five in the family needed new clothes. Her own son’s clothes were the last set she was making.

”Mom, someone, someone.”

Hearing her son, Yue Lanfeng froze for a moment, then immediately got up from the kang. She saw Xiang Dong coming in.

”Aunt Yue.”

”Xiang Dong’s back. Hurry and come inside, it’s too cold outside.”

”It’s okay, we caught up with Xiang Dong and rode back in his car.

Mengqian, this is Aunt Yue. Aunt Yue, this is my fiancée Mengqian.”

”The girl is really pretty. Hurry, sit down, I’ll go pour you some water. Coming back by car is cold too.”

Li Hongjie sat on the heated kang, curiously looking at Xiang Dong and Mengqian.

Xiang Dong knew this was his little brother. Judging from his looks, he was probably better-looking than all four of the older brothers.

Yue Lanfeng carried in two bowls of sugar water. ”Xiang Dong, you two rest here at home. I’ll go call your dad.”
