Gun of Ashes

Chapter 330: Chapter 17: Flesh and Blood Heart_2

Lorenzo had some understanding about the celebration. Perhaps it was Arthur’s doing, but during Lorenzo’s days at the farmhouse, it coincided perfectly with the celebration, allowing him to completely miss it.

”So, you mean the foreign delegates haven’t left yet?”

”Not only haven’t they left, but there are still more on the way,” Pres recalled.

”Leiber, Gaulunaro, Villia, Nalo... and so on, neighboring countries have arrived, with many more still on the way,” Pres said. ”The entire Old Dunling has already entered a state of martial law. Haven’t you noticed there are significantly fewer people around?”

He glanced around; there weren’t many people coming to work. He continued, ”Even mounted police aren’t enough. To ensure security, even the Outer City District has started having mounted police patrols.”

Hearing this, Lorenzo finally realized the seriousness of the matter to the authorities. The celebration time had already ended; they weren’t here for singing and dancing. Perhaps some lucrative arms deals would be struck here, along with technical support and complex politics... but these had nothing to do with Lorenzo.

Lorenzo knew his limits well; he understood that his life should be like an action-filled detective novel, not some bureaucratic story. No need to worry about such things.

However, looking at it this way, he understood why Arthur was so eager to kill Lawrence. If Lawrence lived until the delegates arrived in Old Dunling, who knows what he might stir up.

”Then... a day off today?” Lorenzo tentatively asked. Unlike Pres, he was an external detective and didn’t need to work every day.

”Get lost!” Pres didn’t even look at Lorenzo. He was extremely irritable now. He didn’t want this chatterbox detective to bother him, especially since he hadn’t slept all night. He had no desire to go on bizarre adventures with this detective.

Lorenzo shook his head, stood up helplessly, realizing Pres didn’t want to waste his precious time on him.

But as he stood, Lorenzo saw an untimely figure and immediately froze, then sat back down, this time directly leaning against Pres’s desk, as if hiding from someone.

”What are you doing?”

”If you keep quiet, I’ll find a way to get you out of here. How about a paid vacation package?”

Lorenzo directly blocked Pres’s words.

Although in a daze, Pres quickly got alert. He somewhat believed in this ridiculous offer; despite Lorenzo being an unserious detective, seriously speaking, in his eyes, Lorenzo was a mysterious figure who navigated both black and white realms, summoned by mysterious departments, calling Bola a brother.

But he was also somewhat curious, looking around, trying to find what Lorenzo saw. Then a similarly familiar figure appeared in his view... it also gave him a headache.

The girl wore a standard police uniform. Her fiery red hair was neatly tied up, unlike the tired spirits of others. Every time you saw her, she was always full of vitality and spirit.

”So wasn’t she on vacation?” Lorenzo asked softly.

”Can’t take a few months off, right?” Though unsure what happened, Pres answered softly.

”But...”

Lorenzo’s mind was a bit confused. With Arthur’s personality, it was impossible for him to let Eve come back to work, right? Or... or did this old guy finally wise up, thinking it’s better to guide than block?

”Did she get a promotion?”

”She did.”

Pres nodded. The first time he met Lorenzo was with Eve, but he didn’t know why Lorenzo had such a big reaction.

”Are you now... hiding from her?”

”To be precise, I’m caught off guard by this sudden encounter,” Lorenzo shrank further, unexpectedly able to squeeze into such a narrow space.

”I think, given your personality, you’d shamelessly stand up regardless of the situation.” Although their interaction wasn’t long, Lorenzo’s distinctive personality had left a deep impression on Pres.

Lorenzo paused, recalling carefully, realizing he indeed acted like that, but then shook his head.

”Pres, people can change.”

”Change to be more timid?”

Lorenzo didn’t respond, just remained silent.

The last time he saw Eve was when Lawrence first appeared. Just as Arthur said, he was a madman pretending to be normal. The burning rage made him abandon Eve and try to kill Lawrence.

Afterward, Lorenzo wondered if he would make the same choice if he could do it over. The answer was ”yes.”

Yes, the Night of the Holy Arrival took everything from Lorenzo, and the culprit was right before him. Leaving aside Eve, even if Lorenzo himself died there at that time, it didn’t matter.

But now things were different. Lorenzo had returned from the dead, with even the cold cruelty melting away a bit. During the assassination attempt on Lawrence, he became more human, with blood and flesh growing in his stone heart.

Shedding the beastly guise, living as a human.

Therefore, he also contemplated what happened back then.

In such a desperate situation, Lorenzo was her last hope, but this hope at the time was thinking of taking her and Lawrence to die together.

Lorenzo’s thoughts continually evolved, as people often say, with growth, with age and experiences.

Sometimes he comforted himself, thinking he hadn’t known Eve for long anyway. Also, back then he was also caught up in the killing frenzy... Hmm, this sounds somewhat like a jerk.
