Gun of Ashes

Chapter 325: Chapter 15: There Will Always Be Something Beautiful_2

Hig tried to break free from Lorenzo’s grip, but Lorenzo was evidently much stronger than him, and Hig couldn’t move.

”Hello.” Yawei said with a smile.

”You... hello.” Hig said awkwardly.

He was somewhat of an introvert, or perhaps timid, and he didn’t like interacting with these people. From the demeanor of Yawei and Selyu, it was clear to him that they were destined to be people from different worlds. Sometimes this courtesy felt like the pity of the upper class towards the lowly, making him uncomfortable.

”What do you do for work?” Yawei asked casually.

”Mechanician.” Hig said, although he had been fired from the factory.

After quitting hallucinogens, Hig had been taking on odd jobs to make ends meet. After all, he was a mechanician, and in this mechanical city, there would always be a place for him.

Though he earned less than before, he had more leisure time.

Yawei nodded; being a mechanician sounded far more respectable than being a demon hunter.

Thinking of this, his gaze turned to Lorenzo’s face. Lorenzo, who was shoulder to shoulder with him a moment ago, unconsciously sat up straight as if he was under the gaze of a teacher.

The more Yawei looked at Lorenzo, the more irritated he became. The old man forcibly calmed his mood; after all, he was older, and he couldn’t always be angry. He needed a better attitude.

After repeatedly persuading himself a few times, Yawei moved his gaze away. Sometimes ignoring was a good choice too.

Mrs. Van Rudd placed the record on the phonograph, and melodious songs began to play. Under the flickering candlelight, everyone sat on the ammo boxes warmly welcoming the beautiful moments.

The holidays, ah, the holidays are good. A whole year’s worth of fighting and slaying can stop today, regardless of the little thoughts in their hearts. Everyone would be friends tonight, singing and dancing joyfully.

But it was like an illusory dream; once waking from it, the world returned to its cold and merciless state, as if the joy of last night was just a lie.

Or perhaps only today, at this warm moment, people’s tightly closed hearts might open just a little.

Lorenzo suddenly had a momentary trance, like being too immersed in something, suddenly reminded of who he was.

He was Lorenzo, Lorenzo Holmes.

At a moment when no one noticed, Lorenzo quietly disappeared. He returned to his room and after staring blankly for a while, sat by the window.

He liked this spot, like an observation deck; from here, he could see the sunset of Old Dunling, where the gloomy sky seemed set ablaze, burning all the way beneath the horizon.

Picking up that familiar box, it was his only keepsake from the Demon Hunting Order.

After the Night of the Holy Arrival, Lorenzo had brought it to Old Dunling and eventually buried it, saying goodbye to the past. Yet who would have thought the past would come looking for him again, the demons weren’t completely dead, the Night of the Holy Arrival was also shrouded in bizarre conspiracy and secrets, and he couldn’t stop.

He opened the box, the last nail sword was displayed inside, glimmering under the dim light.

Lorenzo was somewhat nostalgic.

On this day many years ago, the Demon Hunting Order captured the Holy Grail and carried out that great execution, the most glorious moment of humanity fighting the unknown, and certainly the last glory.

The origin of all stories, the culprit responsible for all of this.

”Watson?”

Lorenzo suddenly called out, but no one responded to him, he was alone and solitary in the room.

”Ah, happy holidays.”

He muttered to himself, not even sure whom he’s saying it to, when suddenly a voice sounded behind him.

”You too, happy holidays.”

The voice startled Lorenzo so much he jumped, people often have awkward moments, like when you’re brewing sadness, about to indulge in it, suddenly there’s someone watching it all... simply makes you want to die.

”Selyu?”

Lorenzo looked at the girl by the door, she walked without making a sound.

”So what happened?”

Lorenzo sat down, closed the box, and hid the nail sword away.

”Nothing much, just came to see you, and to thank you for saving my life.” Selyu sat beside, her voice indifferent, making Lorenzo a bit unsure of what to do.

”Oh this, that’s simple, after all, you Stuarts have money, why not...”

Before Lorenzo could finish, Selyu said somewhat distressedly.

”Yes, life-saving grace, what’s it even worth without saving the life?”

That life-threatening showdown, every step had been nerve-wracking, a slight mistake would lead to an overall defeat, yet even so, Lorenzo ultimately only perished along with Lawrence.

”Didn’t save?” Lorenzo pondered for a moment, ”Let’s just say you have me as a coffin mate.”

”You think you’re qualified?”

”Alright then...”

It was somewhat of a life-and-death bond, somewhat of a significant experience, logically now should be the end of the story, everyone grateful to be alive, then pour out their hearts and souls.

But for Lorenzo it felt rather odd, he and Selyu were both very rational people, they were restrained about many things, just like at the brink of death, Lorenzo merely died bravely spouting nonsense without shedding any tears or heartfelt words.

That was indeed a death fitting for Lorenzo’s character, saying the worst words and doing the coolest things.

Looking up at the descending starfire, Lorenzo felt no fear but rather a sense of relief at that time.

All the dying wishes were fulfilled, yet he survived, truly born of a laborious fate.

”This reminds me of a long time ago.”

Lorenzo suddenly said.

”Long time ago?” Selyu sat aside, listening as an audience.
