Pregnant During An Apocalypse [BL]

Chapter 307: Chapter 308 - Foggy

The soldier gulped loudly and licked his lips before he began spilling everything, words tumbling like stones loosed from a cliff.

”The virus... it wasn’t an accident,” he rasped. ”It was a weapon—sent by another country. We had reports, months—no, years—before the outbreak. But we underestimated it. By the time it spread, it had already adapted, mutated. Human DNA twisted beyond recognition. Flesh-eating monsters... not even human anymore. We couldn’t stop it.” His voice cracked. ”So the military scrambled. They created the special squad... fifty researchers, countless officers, soldiers. Our task was to study the infected... and the awakened like you.”

A chill surged down Yunfeng’s spine. His hands trembled as he clenched his fist until his nails embedded into his palm. The pale blue-green glow of his eyes sharpened like blades in the dark.

”So the poison you told Yuki to slip into our food...” Yunfeng’s voice was raw, trembling with rage.

The soldier nodded, throat bobbing hard. ”It... it was the virus. A pure, unmutated sample. A concentrated dosage.”

Yunfeng’s breath hitched. He gritted his teeth, head pounding as a dull ache grew sharper, sharper—like nails clawing into his skull. That explains it... His thoughts twisted back to that night—Jai’s sudden, unbearable heat, Shao’s trembling body, their unbearable hunger and frenzy. He had thought it was coincidence. Natural. But no—no, they had been poisoned. Used. Tested.

”They wanted to see how your bodies would react,” the man added, voice dropping.

Yunfeng staggered back half a step, hand pressing against his temple as pain pulsed through him.

”Then the drug... the one they injected me with recently,” he asked, voice hoarse, almost breaking. ”What was that?” a strange kind of white energy swirled around him.

The man shook his head quickly, panic flickering in his eyes. ”I don’t know everything! I swear! All I know is... they’re desperate. They’ll try anything to find an antidote. Anything.”

Yunfeng’s control snapped. His voice exploded in the night air. ”Do you think experimenting on us is okay?!”

The man’s lips pressed into a hard line. ”If it means saving Millions... the country will sacrifice as many as needed. Even more of you. That’s the truth.”

”You bastard,” Yunfeng whispered, shaking.

The man gave a hollow breath. ”That’s all I know. This drug you speak of... it’s beyond me.”

Yunfeng’s hand trembled as he reached for the so-called package, tearing it open. Inside, nestled in a black foam lining, was a small glass box. Within it, a vial—filled with smoke-like yellow substance that seemed alive, twisting languidly as if it breathed.

His throat went dry. ”What is this?”

The soldier licked his lips. ”Knockout agent. They ordered me to deliver it, then leave. Fast. And if I don’t report back soon...” His gaze flicked up desperately. ”They’ll send others. More of us. You should get me out of here while you can.”

Yunfeng’s grip on the vial tightened until his knuckles whitened. ”And what do they plan to do after they knock us out?”

The soldier’s expression sagged, hopeless. ”Experiment. Piece by piece, they’ll tear you apart. Dissect you. Learn from you... until nothing’s left.”

The words hit like daggers. The silence afterward was unbearable—until a soft, broken murmur pierced it.

”...I can’t believe this...”

Yunfeng spun around, stunned. His heart dropped into his stomach.

”Hana...”

She stood there, barefoot on the wooden floor, her white nightshirt clinging to her frame. Her small hands were trembling, hair a mess around her face, her eyes shimmering with shock. She had been awake. She had heard everything.

”You people...” Her voice cracked, raw and childlike. ”You’re so cruel... we just... we just want to survive too. How could you... how could you have the heart to do this to us?” Tears welled, spilling silently down her cheeks.

As her sobs broke, the air around her shifted. The space warped faintly, a fog gathering like her grief was seeping into the world itself.

”Hana?” Yunfeng’s voice was sharp, panicked. He shot forward, reaching out. ”Stay calm!”

She clutched at her hair, shoulders trembling, lips quivering as more tears fell. ”We want to live too... I just want to go home... to see Mama again... Why is the world... so cruel?”

The fog thickened, the room’s air pressing heavy as Yunfeng’s heartbeat thundered in his ears.

The fog was swirling madly, thick tendrils lashing about as if alive, coiling and breaking apart around Hana’s trembling frame. She stood there, her face buried in her hands as sobs wracked her body.

”Hana—snap out of it!” Yunfeng’s voice cut through the mist as he tried to approach, his steps steady but cautious.

Just as his hand stretched forward, the fog shuddered. A bright spark of white lightning suddenly flared out from its heart and struck his fingertips. A sharp sting jolted up his arm, forcing him to stagger back.

”—agh!” Yunfeng hissed, shaking his hand. His eyes widened as he examined his fingers. The tips were blackened, faint wisps of smoke curling upward.

This... this feels like thunder...

His gaze shot back to Hana, still lost in the swirling white haze, and his chest tightened. She had awakened—her power had awakened.

”Hana,” he tried again, his tone softer this time, urgent but steady. ”Open your eyes, please... I want you to try and calm yourself. Alright?”

”What the heck do you want? Can’t I just—” her voice cracked as she lifted her tear-stained face, but then her eyes widened in terror. The fog coiled tightly around her, glowing faintly with threads of lightning. ”What is this... Yunfeng, what is going on?!”

”Shhh, calm down. It’s your power.”

”My... power?” Her voice faltered, her breathing coming fast and uneven. Tentatively, she reached her trembling hand outward. The fog brushed against her palm. Cold. Cool like mountain mist, slipping through her fingers like a passing cloud. She gasped. ”What... what is my power?”

”I think... something tied to weather,” Yunfeng muttered from the edge of the storm. His sharp eyes tracked the crackling arcs of static leaping inside the mist.

”Yunfeng—” Hana’s voice shook. ”I can’t see properly!” Her hands swatted helplessly at the air, but each frantic motion only seemed to make the fog churn more violently. It grew denser, darker, buzzing with the sharp scent of ozone. ”What the heck is this? How do I control it?!” Her pitch climbed in panic.

”I need you to calm down.”

”Shouting calm down isn’t going to make me calm, you asshole!” Hana snapped, her voice breaking.

Yunfeng clenched his jaw, every instinct screaming at him to stay out—the shocks had nearly seared his skin. But seeing her trembling, swallowed in that raging storm, was worse. He braced himself.

Then he plunged in.

The moment the fog wrapped around him, his body convulsed. Tiny shocks rattled through him in waves, each like a stun-gun pressed to his flesh, multiplied by a hundred. His jaw clenched to stop his teeth from grinding, his muscles spasming under the invisible barrage.

But he kept moving.

Reaching her, Yunfeng threw his arms tightly around Hana, pulling her against his chest. Lightning snapped across his back, stinging him raw, but he didn’t let go.

”There,” he rasped through the crackling air, his lips pressed close to her ear. ”Listen—to my heartbeat, okay?” He squeezed her tighter, anchoring her against him. ”Slowly. Slowly, slow down your breathing.”

Hana’s fingers clutched at his shirt desperately, her small frame trembling. She pressed her ear against his chest, hearing the steady, fierce rhythm of his heart pounding. Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

Her own frantic breaths hitched, then softened, then slowed. She drew one long breath through her nose.

The fog answered her calm. It thinned. Slowly, slowly, the violent currents eased, the sparks fading into faint glimmers before snuffing out. The white haze dissipated like dew in morning light, retreating until the air was clear again.

Yunfeng let out a long exhale, sweat slicking his forehead, but he didn’t release her. He kept her in his arms until the very last shred of mist was gone.

Hana finally pulled back, her face pale, streaked with tears, her body trembling still. ”I... I didn’t mean to...” she whispered.

”I know,” Yunfeng said softly, his voice low and uncharacteristically gentle. His hair still gleamed ghostly white, and his blue-green eyes glowed faintly, reflecting the remnants of her storm. ”It’s not your fault.”

Her lips trembled, and for once, she didn’t argue. She only buried her face back into his chest, too shaken to let go.
