Chapter 55 – 54: The Ogre’s Trail

This peculiar glow immediately caught Rein’s attention.

Rein promptly picked up the ore, and as soon as he held it, he felt an unusually heavy sensation.

“Hiss! Such a high density, it might even be heavier than star iron!”

Having learned how to identify ores from the blacksmith Boris last time, Rein was no longer ignorant about ores.

Rein first squeezed it forcefully, then he lightly hacked at it a few times with his greatsword.

The bizarre ore remained undamaged, which further strengthened Rein’s judgment.

Simply based on its hardness and weight, this piece of ore must be some kind of special ore.

Moreover, according to Rein’s initial judgment, the value of this piece of ore likely was not less than that of the piece of star iron that Boris owned.

Thinking it over, Rein had no inclination to selfishly keep the ore for himself.

Even if this ore was extremely valuable, he would probably receive it during the distribution of spoils based on his contribution, provided he didn’t want anything else.

Consequently, Rein dumped everything from the wooden box into a large cloth bag.

He then picked up the heavy bag and found his team leader, Weilun.

“So much?” After seeing what was inside the cloth bag, Weilun immediately widened his eyes, a surprised expression facing Rein.

“Rein, you really are… our squad’s lucky star!” Watching Rein, who had gathered a lot in such a short time, Weilun didn’t know what to say all of a sudden and could only shake his head and sigh at Rein’s good luck.

“Captain Weilun, when the valuation is done, and we distribute the spoils, I’ll take this ore,” Rein said as he took out the softly glowing stone from the bag and handed it to Weilun.

“Seems like a special ore? That’s indeed rare, no problem!” While Weilun was experienced and knowledgeable, his ability to identify ores was no better than Rein’s, he just knew that this wasn’t an ordinary ore.

“Go on then!” Weilun said as he directly tossed the ore back to Rein.

Just as Rein was puzzled.

He heard Weilun say, “You taking it now is the safest way, waiting until we bring the spoils back to town for the quartermaster to value it, it very well might get assessed into the empire’s required thirty percent share.”

“Just take it now, and if it’s valuable, remember to buy each of us a round of tequila!”

Weilun said, patting Rein’s shoulder with a laugh.

Clearly, in Weilun’s heart, winning over Rein, the promising star of the Night Watchman squad, was much more important than this special ore.

“Haha, of course, no problem, but this…”

Rein certainly understood Captain Weilun’s kindness, he just wasn’t sure if this distribution was really okay, so he didn’t know what to say next.

Just then, a Night Watchman team member waved at Weilun, who was talking with Rein, and called out:

“Captain, you better come take a look at this!”

From the tone, it seemed there was some unexpected discovery.

Curious, Rein followed Weilun over.

They saw a very noticeable trail of huge footprints stretching into the depths of the forest, as this area was near a small river and the ground was moist, the footprints were exceptionally clear.

“Hiss! They’re so big!” Rein exclaimed in surprise as he looked at the row of footprints before him.

“Four toes! These are ogre tracks!!” Unlike Rein’s surprise, Weilun’s expression changed dramatically!

“Rein, we need to leave here immediately! Damn it! To think that ogres appeared here, and it looks like this small tribe of Sinfin fishmen must have been driven here by the ogre.”

“Perhaps the ogres are keeping these fishmen as livestock. If that’s really the case, and we’ve killed so many fishmen…”

“This is bad, we need to leave immediately!”

“Everyone, move! Stop collecting the spoils!” Weilun immediately called out to everyone.

Seeing Weilun look so anxious, Rein felt a tightening in his heart as well.

After all, as the captain of the Night Watchman, Weilun was far more experienced than him, and the enemy had just witnessed his combat power.

The fact that they were now hastily deciding to retreat indicated that the ogre’s strength must far surpass their group.

Soon, everyone put the spoils on the pack horses, and then each leaped onto their horses, heading back the way they had come.

Actually, Rein was still somewhat puzzled.

“Since we really discovered traces of the ogre, shouldn’t we stealthily approach and investigate?”

“Or is it that ogres have extremely acute senses of smell or hearing, making it impossible to approach?”

“After all, we don’t even know the number of ogres.”

After hastily leaving the Glimmer Lake region, Rein could no longer hold back and asked:

“Captain Weilun, are ogres really that fearsome?”

Weilun glanced at Rein and said gravely, “More terrifying than you can imagine. You’ve also fought the savage werewolves before, were they not very strong?”

“Of course!” Rein nodded, that savage werewolf was the strongest enemy he had encountered so far.

“Well, do you know what would happen if that savage werewolf encountered a mature ogre? It would either obediently become the ogre’s subordinate or it would run away immediately. There’s no third option.”

“The gap between them is like that between wolves and brown bears in the forest!” Weilun gestured with his fingers and confidently stated.

“That large?” Rein expressed surprised.

This was far beyond his expectations; ogres were so powerful!

He had thought their strength would be fairly similar.

Weilun nodded and continued, “Yes, Rein, have you heard about the recent ogre attack on Albero Town?”

“This… I think I’ve heard something about it.” Rein immediately recalled the content discussed by some pseudo-rich generation peers on the day he just crossed over, which seemed to be about this Albero Town.

“The sheriff of Albero Town, Knight Hamza Qulin, whose strength is not much inferior to Lord Hamilton, was severely wounded by that roaming ogre that night.”

“If it weren’t for other Night Watchmen risking their lives to distract the ogre, Sir Hamza, a knight of great strength, might have been killed in honor.”

After hearing Weilun’s explanation, Rein raised an eyebrow; this really surprised him.

He had always thought ogres were just large, slow-giant fools with immense strength, but according to Weilun’s description, it seemed not to be the case.

He didn’t know Knight Hamza, but he was aware of Hamilton’s strength.

If a knight like Hamza, whose strength was comparable to Hamilton’s, couldn’t withstand the ogre, Rein also had the awareness that even if he activated his Blacksmith Strength Lv3, he would not be a match for the ogre.

“I’ve been feeling that something’s been off this last year, there’s been too much happening in the Meister County!” Weilun seemed to recall and sighed at this moment.

“After we get back, we must report this matter to Lord Hamilton immediately.”

If Rein felt somewhat complacent after his mass killing at the merfolk camp,

then after understanding the formidable strength of the ogre, that trace of complacency in his heart disappeared without a trace.

“The revolution is not yet successful, comrades still need to work hard!”

A famous saying from his past life naturally came to Rein’s mind.
