Return of Black Lotus system:Taming Cheating Male Leads

Chapter 31: Chapter-31

Duke Robbiston sat to her right, his weathered face grave. To her left, an empty chair—reserved for Prince Ashton, who hadn’t yet arrived. Seraphina stood near the back with the other petitioners, her white dress making her glow like an angel among the darker court attire. Her expression was serene concern, but her eyes were sharp.

”This council is convened,” Heena announced, her voice carrying authority. ”Multiple concerns have been raised regarding the royal consorts’ whereabouts and wellbeing. We will address them directly and completely.”

Marquis Halverton stood immediately. ”Your Majesty, with all due respect, the explanation of a purification ritual doesn’t satisfy the military’s legitimate security concerns. We need confirmation—”

”I understand your concerns,” Heena interrupted smoothly. ”Which is why I’ve convened this council. Transparency benefits us all.”

”Then grant us access to verify their safety,” another noble called out. ”A simple conversation through a closed door—”

”Would violate sacred rites,” a temple priest interjected. ”The Purification Ritual is explicit in its requirements. Any external contact contaminates the spiritual work.”

”Spiritual work doesn’t supersede military necessity!” One of Kieran’s officers stood, his voice sharp with frustration. ”The northern borders need orders. The western front faces raiders. Duke Adrian’s absence has frozen crucial trade negotiations. How long does piety take precedence over practical governance?”

The chamber erupted into argument—half supporting the military concerns, half defending religious tradition. Heena let it continue for exactly thirty seconds before raising her hand.

Silence fell.

”The question before this council is simple,” Heena said. ”Do you trust your Empress’s word that the consorts are safe and engaged in legitimate spiritual practice? Or do you believe I’ve imprisoned them unlawfully and am lying to cover it?”

The bluntness shocked the room into quiet.

Seraphina’s voice rose, soft but clear. ”Your Majesty, no one doubts your honor. We simply seek reassurance for the worried people of the empire. The consorts are beloved figures. Their sudden disappearance creates anxiety that undermines stability.”

”Anxiety you’ve been actively cultivating,” Heena countered, meeting her eyes directly. ”Seventeen letters in six hours. Personal visits to key military figures. Organizing ’prayer vigils’ for the missing. You’ve worked very hard to ensure people are worried, Lady Seraphina.”

Gasps rippled through the chamber. It was a direct accusation, breaking the facade of polite discourse.

Seraphina’s eyes widened, tears immediately welling. ”Your Majesty, I was simply concerned for my friends—”

”Your friends?” Heena’s smile was cold. ”Or your devoted admirers? Tell me, Lady Seraphina—what is the nature of your relationship with my five husbands that makes you so invested in their whereabouts?”

The chamber went deathly silent.

”I... they’ve been kind to me, Your Majesty. Supportive of my charitable work. Nothing improper—”

”Of course not,” Heena said, her tone suggesting she believed otherwise. ”But your concern seems to exceed normal friendship. One might almost think you had some claim on them.”

Duke Robbiston cleared his throat uncomfortably. ”Your Majesty, this line of questioning—”

”Is relevant,” Heena cut him off. ”Lady Seraphina has made herself the face of opposition to my authority. She’s organized nobles, influenced military officers, and now stands before this council demanding I prove myself to her satisfaction.” She stood, her presence commanding. ”So let me ask the council directly: what proof would satisfy you?”

”Let us see them,” someone called out.

”Produce them before this council,” another agreed.

”If they’re truly safe and willing, they can confirm it themselves!”

The chorus of demands grew louder. Heena let it build, watching Seraphina’s face carefully. The saint looked appropriately concerned and hopeful—but there was calculation there too. She thought she’d won. That Heena would either have to refuse and look guilty, or produce five tortured men and reveal everything.

Heena smiled.

”Very well,” she said quietly.

The room went silent again.

”If this council demands to see the royal consorts, I will not refuse such a direct request.” She looked at Duke Robbiston. ”Though I must note that interrupting their spiritual work prematurely may have consequences for their tournament performance. They’ve been fasting for three days.”

”We understand, Your Majesty,” Robbiston said carefully. ”But confirmation of their safety takes precedence.”

”Then you shall have it.” Heena turned to the shadow guard stationed by the door. ”Retrieve the royal consorts from their meditation chamber. Inform them the council requires their presence immediately.”

The guard bowed and vanished through a side door.

Seraphina’s expression flickered—just for a moment—with something that might have been concern. Her system must have been warning her about something, but Heena couldn’t tell what.

The chamber buzzed with nervous energy as they waited. Minutes stretched. Nobles exchanged glances. Military officers shifted in their seats.

Then the main doors opened.

Five figures entered.

Prince Kieran walked first, his silver hair pulled back neatly, wearing his formal military uniform. His ice-blue eyes were clear and sharp, scanning the room with a warrior’s assessment. He moved with controlled grace, showing no signs of weakness.

Duke Adrian followed, his scholarly robes immaculate, glasses perched perfectly on his nose. His golden eyes held their usual calculating intelligence as he surveyed the assembled council with professional interest.

General Lucian strode in with his characteristic military bearing, scarred face impassive, posture straight and strong. His battle-worn features showed no distress, only the patient endurance of a seasoned soldier.

High Priest Raphael moved with ethereal grace, his white-blonde hair flowing, violet eyes serene and distant—the expression of someone who’d spent days in deep meditation. His beautiful face was composed, spiritual rather than suffering.

Lord Damien entered last, his pretty features arranged in that characteristic slight smile, green eyes taking in everything with the spymaster’s perpetual awareness. He moved smoothly, showing no signs of the torture he’d endured mere hours ago.

They all looked... normal. Healthy. Perhaps slightly thinner from fasting, perhaps moving with the careful deliberation of those who’d been still for days—but nothing suggested torture, imprisonment, or unwilling captivity.

The chamber erupted.

”Prince Kieran!”

”Your Grace, you’re well!”

”Thank the gods!”

Seraphina’s face went absolutely white. Her mouth opened slightly in shock. This wasn’t possible. They’d been tortured for three days straight—they should be wrecks, broken, unable to stand let alone walk into a formal council looking composed.

*How?*

Duke Robbiston stood, relief evident on his weathered face. ”Your Highness, Duke Adrian—thank the heavens. We were worried when we couldn’t reach you.”

Kieran inclined his head respectfully. ”Duke Robbiston. I apologize for any concern. Her Majesty informed me of the council’s questions.” His voice was steady, strong. ”I assure you, we’re quite well.”

”But the border situation—” one of his officers started.

”Has been handled through standing protocols, I’m certain,” Kieran replied smoothly. ”Though if there are urgent matters requiring my attention, I’m prepared to address them immediately. The purification ritual has strengthened my clarity of thought considerably.”

Adrian adjusted his glasses. ”Similarly, any financial matters that arose during my brief absence can be reviewed. I apologize if my unavailability caused difficulties, but spiritual discipline requires genuine commitment.”

Seraphina found her voice, though it trembled. ”You... you chose this? All of you?”

Raphael turned his serene violet gaze on her. ”Lady Seraphina. Yes, we chose this path. Voluntarily and with Her Majesty’s gracious permission. The empire has grown too focused on material concerns. We wished to remind ourselves—and through us, the people—that spiritual strength is equally vital.”
