Return of Black Lotus system:Taming Cheating Male Leads

Chapter 28: Chapter-28

Heena absorbed this, calculating rapidly. Multiple pressure points converging simultaneously. Seraphina was skilled—attacking from every angle at once, making it impossible to address all concerns quietly.

”Lady Seraphina’s personal movements?” she asked.

”She spent two hours at the main temple this morning, praying very publicly for the consorts’ safe return. Dozens of nobles witnessed her tearful devotion. She’s also organized a charity event for tomorrow evening—’supporting the families of missing loved ones.’ The timing is deliberately provocative.”

”Of course it is.” Heena’s jaw tightened. ”Physical security? The chamber where the consorts are held—any indication someone’s discovered its location?”

”None. The chamber remains secure. We’ve detected no surveillance attempts, no unusual activity in that sector. Only shadow guards know its exact location.”

”Good. But if someone starts systematically searching the palace...”

”We can delay and misdirect for a time, but if Duke Robbiston or other high officials demand authorized searches backed by imperial law, we cannot deny them access to all areas without arousing fatal suspicion.”

There it was—the real problem. She could hide the consorts from casual discovery, but not from official investigation backed by authority that rivaled her own.

”Public sentiment?” she asked. ”How are people responding to these whispers?”

”Divided. Your supporters point to your recent reforms and dismiss the concerns as baseless. Lady Seraphina’s network amplifies worry and paints you as potentially tyrannical. The uncommitted majority is starting to ask questions—not hostile yet, but curious. Common folk in the market districts are beginning to discuss it. If this continues unchecked for another two days, the narrative shifts from casual concern to legitimate accusations.”

Heena stood, pacing to the window despite her ankle’s protest. After the guard left, System 427 spoke aloud, his voice worried.

”She’s building a perfect storm. Multiple fronts, coordinated timing, public sympathy on her side. And I still can’t get a read on her system’s capabilities. Every time I try to scan for it, there’s just... nothing. Like it doesn’t exist, but we know it does.”

”Sophisticated shielding,” Heena muttered. ”Which means it’s powerful and whoever’s running it knows how to avoid detection.” She turned from the window. ”We need to control this before it controls us. I’ll grant Seraphina the formal audience she’s requested—tomorrow at noon, full court attendance.”

”You’re going to face her publicly? With all these questions brewing?”

”I’m going to control the narrative before she does. If she wants answers, she’ll get them—carefully curated, completely believable answers that shut down the speculation.” Heena’s smile was cold and sharp. ”And I need Prince Ashton here faster. Send word to accelerate his journey. Three days, not five.”

The day of council.

The Grand Hall glittered with afternoon light streaming through stained glass windows, casting rainbow patterns across marble floors. Every seat was filled—nobles in their finest silks, military officers in dress uniforms, merchants in their most expensive velvets. The air buzzed with barely suppressed curiosity.

Heena sat on her throne with perfect posture, the ruby tiara catching light like drops of blood. Her dark green gown—chosen specifically to project power rather than femininity—flowed around her like shadows given form. Her injured ankle throbbed beneath the heavy fabric, but not a flicker of pain crossed her serene expression.

System 427 hovered invisibly beside her, running constant threat assessments. *”Two hundred and forty-seven attendees. Seventeen are confirmed Seraphina supporters. Duke Robbiston is front row, left side. Three of Kieran’s military officers scattered throughout. Temple priests in the back. Everyone’s watching.”*

*I know,* Heena thought back. *Let them watch.*

The Royal Herald struck his staff three times against the floor. ”Her Majesty, Empress Heena Valeriya Drakonhart, will now hear petitions and concerns from the assembled court!”

A murmur rippled through the crowd. This was unusual—typically court was for administrative matters and formal edicts, not open petitions. But Heena had specifically structured today’s audience this way, giving Seraphina the perfect stage for her performance.

Better to control the battlefield than let the enemy choose it.

”Lady Seraphina Whitmore requests an audience, Your Majesty,” the Herald announced.

”Granted,” Heena said, her voice carrying effortlessly. ”Let Lady Seraphina approach.”

The massive doors at the far end opened.

Seraphina entered like a vision from a painting—white gown flowing, golden hair crowned with simple flowers, her face the picture of gentle concern. She moved with ethereal grace, each step measured and perfect. Whispers of admiration followed her progress down the crimson carpet.

*”Protagonist entrance sequence detected,”* System 427 muttered. *”Soft lighting effect, enhanced crowd reaction, background music—wait, there’s no music. Why do I hear music?”*

*Her system is manipulating perception,* Heena realized. *Making her entrance seem more dramatic, more sympathetic. Clever.*

Seraphina stopped at the appropriate distance and executed a perfect curtsy—deep enough to show respect, not so deep as to seem subservient. ”Your Majesty. Thank you for granting me this audience. I know how valuable your time is.”

”Lady Seraphina.” Heena inclined her head fractionally. ”What matter brings you before the throne today?”

”I come with a heart full of concern, Your Majesty.” Seraphina’s voice trembled slightly—perfectly calibrated vulnerability. ”And I pray it is unfounded concern, easily dismissed by your wisdom.”

*Opening move: establish herself as reasonable, deferential, just a worried friend.* Heena kept her expression neutral. ”Speak freely. This court values honest discourse.”

”It regards the royal consorts, Your Majesty.” Seraphina’s blue eyes glistened with unshed tears. ”I... forgive my boldness, but I haven’t seen them in three days. Not since the recent court session where there was some... tension.”

Calculated pause. Let the crowd remember that ”tension”—when Heena had publicly humiliated Seraphina by removing her court access.

”Duke Adrian was supposed to review orphanage funding with me,” Seraphina continued, her voice soft and worried. ”Prince Kieran had scheduled a meeting about temple security. High Priest Raphael always leads the dawn prayers, but the junior priests say he’s absent. And Lord Damien...” She pressed a hand to her heart. ”I’ve heard nothing. From any of them.”

The crowd shifted, exchanging glances. Duke Robbiston’s weathered face remained impassive, but his eyes were sharp.

”Three days without word,” Seraphina said, louder now. ”Three of the empire’s greatest servants, simply... vanished. Your Majesty, I don’t mean to presume, but...” She let tears finally fall, just two perfect droplets tracking down porcelain cheeks. ”I’m frightened for them. Please tell me they’re safe.”

Brilliant. Heena had to admire the craftsmanship. Seraphina hadn’t accused her of anything—just expressed worry, asked for reassurance. If Heena dismissed her concerns coldly, she’d look guilty. If she got defensive, she’d look suspicious. The saint had boxed her in beautifully.

The court waited, two hundred faces turned toward the throne, watching for the Empress’s response.

Heena smiled. Not cold, not angry—genuinely amused.

”Lady Seraphina, your concern for my husbands’ wellbeing is touching.” She let that word—*my husbands*—hang in the air, a subtle reminder of ownership. ”And I’m pleased to ease your worries immediately. The royal consorts are perfectly safe and engaged in an important spiritual undertaking.”

Seraphina’s eyes widened slightly. ”Spiritual undertaking, Your Majesty?”

”Indeed.” Heena gestured to one of her attendants, who stepped forward with a scroll. ”Before the Grand Tournament, High Priest Raphael petitioned me for permission to observe the Ancient Rite of Purification—a week-long ritual of fasting, prayer, and meditation to cleanse both body and spirit before competition.”
