Despite his outward display of sorrow, anger simmered beneath the surface. Liu Bei had hoped for an easy transition of power, one that would strengthen his position without requiring excessive resources. Now, he faced not only the monumental task of rebuilding Lingling but also the challenge of repairing his reputation, which Zhou Yu had so skillfully tarnished.

Kuai Liang, his elder advisor, stepped forward, his tone calm and measured. ”My lord, Lingling may be a ruin, but its strategic importance remains. If we commit to its restoration, it will eventually become a stronghold that solidifies our influence in the southern region. This will require patience and careful management, but the rewards will be worth the effort.”

Ju Shou, whose schemes had played a role in sparking the conflict, nodded in agreement but looked uneasy. ”Zhou Yu is clever, and his sabotage extends beyond the physical. His accusations have sown doubt among the people. We must act quickly to dispel these falsehoods. Our actions in Lingling must demonstrate your commitment to the common people’s welfare, lest his words take root in the hearts of the people.”

Wang Xiu, thinking of more pragmatic ways, added, ”We must also be cautious of overextending ourselves. The resources required for Lingling’s reconstruction are significant. If we divert too much attention and manpower to this endeavor, we risk weakening our position elsewhere. Zhou Yu’s intent may have been to lure us into such a trap.”

Liu Bei nodded, his features calm but his mind racing. The challenges were many, and each required careful deliberation. ”Your counsel is wise,” he said. ”We must balance compassion with practicality. I will send further aid to Lingling to support its people and ensure the city begins its recovery. At the same time, we will launch a campaign to refute Zhou Yu’s lies. Let the truth be known, it is not I who caused their suffering, but Zhou Yu and his unprovoked sabotage of Lingling.”

The advisors murmured their agreement, but the tension in the room was palpable. The task ahead was daunting, and even Liu Bei’s closest advisors and generals could see the strain it placed on their resources and morale.

As the meeting seemed to conclude, the messenger cleared his throat hesitantly. ”My lord,” he said, his voice tentative. ”There is one more matter. Zhou Yu left behind a series of flyers throughout Lingling, accusing you of betraying the tripartite agreement and using Ju Shou’s schemes to provoke the war. The people are being told that you care only for expanding your domain and not for the suffering of the common folk.”

The room fell silent. Liu Bei’s mask of benevolence slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing the flicker of rage beneath. His fingers tightened into a fist, but he quickly regained his composure, his expression turning somber.

”Zhou Yu is a master of deception,” he said softly. ”He seeks to tarnish my name because he knows the strength of my bond with the people. We will not let him succeed.”

Ju Shou looked visibly uncomfortable. Though he had acted with Liu Bei’s interests in mind, he knew that his schemes had, in part, laid the groundwork for Zhou Yu’s accusations. ”My lord, I will take responsibility for crafting a counter narrative. We must highlight Zhou Yu’s treachery and the Sun Clan’s role in destabilizing the region. The people need to see you as the beacon of hope and unity.”

Liu Bei nodded, though his gaze lingered on Ju Shou for a moment longer than necessary. ”See to it, Master Ju Shou. This is not just a matter of truth, it is a matter of survival. Our cause cannot endure without the trust of the people.”

Wang Xiu stepped forward. ”We must also act quickly in Lingling. If the people see our forces repairing the city, distributing food, and tending to their needs, their anger will subside. Actions speak louder than words, and Zhou Yu’s lies will falter in the face of tangible results.”

Kuai Liang added, ”In the long term, Lingling’s recovery will strengthen our legitimacy. Zhou Yu may have sought to weaken us, but his sabotage gives us an opportunity to prove our resolve and compassion. This is a test, my lord, and we must rise to meet it.”

Liu Bei sighed, leaning back in his chair. The weight of the situation pressed heavily on him, but his advisors’ words gave him some measure of clarity. ”Very well,” he said. ”We will proceed as you have advised. Master Kuai Yue will oversee the reconstruction efforts in Lingling, with additional support from the treasury and reinforcements from Xiangyang. Master Ju Shou, you will coordinate the propaganda campaign to counter Zhou Yu’s accusations. Master Wang Xiu, prepare contingency plans to ensure our other holdings remain secure during this period of strain.”

The advisors bowed, their expressions a mix of determination and apprehension. As they left the room, Liu Bei remained seated, his mind churning with thoughts of the challenges ahead.

Zhou Yu had dealt him a severe blow, but he would not allow it to define his legacy. The people of Lingling and the entire southern region of Jing Province would see him as the virtuous leader he claimed to be, no matter the cost.

On the other hand, as news of Liu Bei’s victory at Lingling spread, it ignited a wildfire of discussion and debate throughout the southern parts of Jing Province. While some heralded the victory as a testament to Liu Bei’s strength and determination, others were deeply disturbed by the accompanying rumors.

The whispers painted a picture of betrayal and self-serving ambition, with accusations that Liu Bei had deliberately destroyed the tripartite agreement, plunging Lingling into chaos for his own gain.

In towns and villages near Lingling, the common people felt a growing sense of disillusionment. Many had once believed in Liu Bei as a virtuous leader who prioritized the well being of the people above all else. But now, as conflicting reports reached their ears, doubts crept in.

Had they misjudged him? Could it be true that Liu Bei was no different from the other warlords, willing to sacrifice the innocent in his pursuit of power?

Yet, even as skepticism grew, Kuai Yue’s counter-narrative began to take root. His efforts to spread the truth about Zhou Yu’s sabotage painted a different story, one where Liu Bei was the victim of a cunning adversary’s schemes.

Flyers and messengers detailed how Zhou Yu had ruined Lingling to undermine Liu Bei’s reputation, and how Liu Bei had responded with compassion, sending large amounts of aid to rebuild the city and alleviate the suffering of its people.

This clash of two opposite narratives created a storm of confusion among the populace. Some sided with Liu Bei, believing in his benevolence and the sincerity of his actions.

Others, swayed by Zhou Yu’s accusations, remained skeptical. The battle for hearts and minds raged on, creating a tense and uncertain atmosphere across the region.

Meanwhile, far to the northeast, the air in Xiapi was thick with celebration. Lie Fan and the Qilin Army had returned victorious, and the people of Xiapi welcomed them with open arms.

The streets were adorned with banners, and the sounds of drums and cheering echoed through the city. Merchants handed out food and trinkets, while children ran through the streets, their laughter mingling with the jubilant cries of the crowd.

At the forefront of the procession rode Lie Fan, his posture regal yet relaxed. His armor gleamed in the sunlight, a testament to the hard-fought victories he and his army had achieved.

Beside him, Lu Lingqi rode her horse with equal grace, her presence commanding admiration from the onlookers. The bond between the two was evident, as the people of Xiapi adored their lord and lady.

Behind them rode three of the Yellow Ghosts, Lie Fan’s elite personal bodyguards, their silent and imposing figures a stark contrast to the festive atmosphere.

Around them were Zhang Liao, Man Chong, Zhao Yun, Ji Ling, Wen Pin, and Huang Chao followed, their expressions a mix of pride and relief. Each man carried the weight of battle, yet the sight of their beloved Xiapi reinvigorated their spirits.

To Lie Fan and Lu Lingqi’s left and right rode his two advisors who accompanied him, Sima Yi and Xun You. Both men exuded a quiet confidence, their sharp minds already calculating the next steps to consolidate the victories and maintain stability within the region.

As they passed through the city gates, the crowd’s cheers grew louder. Flowers were thrown into the air, and citizens knelt in respect as Lie Fan’s horse trotted past. The atmosphere was electric, a testament to the deep connection Lie Fan had cultivated with the people of Xiapi.

Lie Fan and Lu Lingqi waved to the ecstatic crowds, their smiles genuine as they basked in the warmth of their people’s adoration. The cheers of the citizens grew louder with each wave, and the streets filled with joy and celebration.

Flowers rained down like confetti, and banners bearing the Qilin Army’s emblem fluttered proudly in the breeze. The sight of their lord and lady returning victorious after such a demanding campaign filled the hearts of Xiapi’s people with pride and reassurance.

As the procession continued toward Xiapi’s Governor Castle, the festive atmosphere only intensified. Merchants offered free food and drinks to soldiers and civilians alike, while musicians played triumphant melodies. Children, too young to understand the full gravity of Lie Fan’s achievements, danced and laughed alongside their families. The spirit of unity and celebration swept through the city like a wave.

At the gates of the Governor Castle, Lie Fan’s remaining advisors stood in a neat line, their expressions a mixture of relief, pride, and anticipation. Chen Gui, Jia Xu, Chen Qun, Liu Ye, Chen Gong, and Lu Su, who didn’t join Lie Fan in his campaign and to govern his domain, were all present to welcome their lord home.

As Lie Fan and Lu Lingqi dismounted their horses, they were joined by the rest of the entourage. The Yellow Ghosts, silent as ever, formed a protective perimeter, while Zhang Liao, Zhao Yun, Ji Ling, Wen Pin, and Huang Chao dismounted with practiced ease. Sima Yi and Xun You exchanged subtle glances with their fellow advisors, the unspoken bond of shared responsibility evident.

Lie Fan stepped forward, his expression warm as he greeted each of his advisors in turn. He clasped hands with Chen Gui, offered a respectful nod to Jia Xu, and exchanged words of camaraderie with Chen Qun and Liu Ye. To Chen Gong and Lu Su, he gave reassurances of his gratitude for their efforts in maintaining stability in his absence.

”My friends,” Lie Fan began, his voice steady but filled with emotion, ”it is good to be home. This victory is not mine alone, but it belongs to all of us, to the brave soldiers who fought valiantly, to the people who supported us from afar, and to you, my trusted advisors, who ensured the smooth governance of our lands.”
