Meanwhile, at the main gate, Zhang Fei’s booming voice echoed as he rallied his troops. ”Smash those gates! Let them see the might of our army! Push harder, you dogs, or I’ll have your hides myself!” His fierce determination drove his men forward, but the Sun Clan defenders above poured boiling oil onto the battering ram, forcing the attackers to abandon it temporarily.

The Sun Clan soldiers, emboldened by their superior position and high morale, counterattacked with ruthless efficiency. Cheng Pu, leading a detachment on the western wall, personally led a charge against the soldiers who had managed to breach the first layer of defenses. With his blade flashing, he cut through the ranks of Liu Bei’s men, his shouts of ”For Lingling!” galvanizing his comrades.

Zhou Tai, on the other hand, led the fight at the eastern wall. His dual sabers whirled in deadly arcs as he dispatched wave after wave of attackers. The ground around him was littered with the fallen, but he stood firm, his armor smeared with blood and sweat.

Zhou Yu watched the battle unfold, his strategic mind calculating every move. ”Their morale is faltering,” he observed, noticing the disorganized movements among the enemy ranks. ”Send reinforcements to the eastern gate. Zhou Tai needs more archers. Signal the cavalry to prepare for a counter-charge if they breach the walls.”

Liu Bei’s forces, despite their determination, were beginning to falter. Exhaustion and the relentless defense of the Sun Clan were taking their toll. Guan Yu, seeing the mounting casualties, made a swift decision. He turned to his officers and said, ”Prepare to issue a challenge. Perhaps a duel will shift the tide in our favor.”

Meanwhile, Zhang Fei, frustrated by the lack of progress, bellowed, ”Enough of this nonsense! Let’s see if their generals have the guts to face me in combat! Cowards hiding behind their walls, I, Zhang Fei, challenge any of you to a duel! Come and face your doom!”

His voice carried over the battlefield, reaching the ears of Zhou Yu and his commanders. On the walls, Cheng Pu sneered. ”Zhang Fei... a brute who relies on strength alone. If he wishes for a duel, I shall grant it.”

Zhou Yu held up a hand. ”Not yet. Let them stew. Their desperation will grow. We have the advantage. There is no need to rush.”

But Zhang Fei’s taunts grew louder and more personal. ”Are the Sun Clan generals so frightened that they’ll let their soldiers die rather than face me? Zhou Yu, Cheng Pu, Zhou Tai, Han Dang! Any of you! Show yourselves!”

At last, Zhou Tai stepped forward. ”I’ll face him,” he said calmly. ”His bluster will be his undoing.”

Zhou Yu nodded. ”Very well. But remember, this is not just about defeating Zhang Fei. It is about breaking their spirit. Show them the might and discipline of the Sun Clan warriors.”

Zhou Tai descended from the wall and made his way to the battlefield. As he approached, Zhang Fei’s eyes lit up with anticipation. ”Finally! A man with courage. Let us see if you can match my strength!”

The two warriors faced each other, the battlefield falling silent as soldiers from both sides paused to witness the duel. Zhou Tai’s calm demeanor contrasted sharply with Zhang Fei’s fiery energy. They circled each other, their weapons at the ready.

Zhang Fei struck first, his serpent spear thrusting forward with incredible force. Zhou Tai sidestepped gracefully, his twin sabers slicing toward Zhang Fei in a counterattack. The clash of metal rang out as Zhang Fei parried the blows, his strength evident in every move.

But Zhou Tai was no ordinary opponent. His movements were precise and calculated, exploiting openings in Zhang Fei’s aggressive style. With a deft maneuver, he forced Zhang Fei to step back, his balance momentarily disrupted.

”You rely too much on brute strength,” Zhou Tai said, his voice steady. ”Skill and discipline will always triumph.”

Zhang Fei roared in defiance, launching a flurry of attacks. The ground around them became a whirlwind of dust and steel as the two warriors clashed. Zhou Tai’s sabers danced, parrying and striking with unerring accuracy. Each time Zhang Fei pressed forward, Zhou Tai turned his aggression against him, forcing him to retreat.

The duel raged on, but it was clear to those watching that Zhou Tai held the upper hand. His composure and skill were unmatched, and Zhang Fei, despite his strength, began to tire. At last, with a swift strike, Zhou Tai disarmed Zhang Fei, sending his serpent spear flying from his grasp.

Zhou Tai stepped back, his sabers pointed downward in a gesture of restraint. ”Yield, Zhang Fei. This battle is over.”

Zhang Fei, his chest heaving, glared at Zhou Tai. For a moment, it seemed he might refuse. But then, seeing the respect in Zhou Tai’s eyes and hearing the cheers of the Sun Clan soldiers, he let out a deep sigh and nodded. ”You are a worthy opponent. I yield.”

The battlefield erupted in cheers from the Sun Clan and murmurs of disbelief from Liu Bei’s troops. Guan Yu, watching from the rear, clenched his fists. He knew the loss of the duel would further dampen their already faltering morale.

Zhou Tai returned to the walls, where Zhou Yu greeted him with a rare smile. ”Well done. You have not only won the duel but also demonstrated the discipline and skill that define the Sun Clan warriors.”

As the battle resumed, Liu Bei’s forces fought with diminished resolve. The Sun Clan, reinvigorated by Zhou Tai’s victory, pressed their advantage, driving back the attackers at every turn. By nightfall, the battlefield was littered with the remnants of siege engines and the bodies of fallen soldiers.

Liu Bei’s army retreated, their hopes of taking Lingling dashed. In the command tent, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei convened with their officers, their expressions grim. ”We underestimated them,” Guan Yu admitted. ”Zhou Yu is a formidable foe, and his soldiers are as disciplined as they come. We must regroup and rethink our strategy.”

Meanwhile, within the walls of Lingling, Zhou Yu and his commanders celebrated their hard-fought victory. ”This is just the beginning,” Zhou Yu said, raising a cup in a toast. ”Today, we have shown that Lingling stands strong. Let this victory be a message to all who dare to challenge the Sun Clan.”

The defenders cheered, their spirits high. The siege had tested their strength and resolve, but they had emerged victorious. And as the stars lit up the night sky, the Sun Clan soldiers prepared for the battles yet to come, their confidence unshaken and their loyalty unwavering.

Meanwhile, in the city of Zhongshan, the town was bustling with life as news spread of Gongsun Gong’s arrival and his formal allegiance to Lie Fan. The announcement reverberated across the land, signaling to both allies and rivals the growing might of Lie Fan. The Gongsun Clan, once an isolated force in the far northeast, was now an integral part of a domain that stretched across the northern plains and beyond.

The ceremony to mark this allegiance was held in Zhongshan’s grand hall, where Lie Fan sat at the center of power. Gongsun Gong, dressed in his finest ceremonial robes, knelt before him, his voice ringing with conviction. ”From this day forward, the Gongsun Clan pledges its loyalty to Lord Lie Fan. We shall serve under your banner and contribute to the vision of a united and prosperous land.”

Lie Fan nodded, his expression calm but commanding. ”Your loyalty is recognized, Gongsun Gong. Together, we shall ensure that peace and prosperity reach every corner of this domain. Let this be a new Chapter for your clan and for all who seek a brighter future.”

The hall erupted in cheers, the gathered officials, generals, and citizens recognizing the importance of this moment. With Gongsun Gong’s formal submission, Lie Fan’s dominion extended even farther, encompassing strategic territories that opened new opportunities for trade and diplomacy, especially with Goguryeo and other potential allies or threats beyond the northeastern borders.

Later that evening, away from the pomp and ceremony, Lie Fan and Gongsun Gong met in private. The room was lit by a single lantern, casting warm shadows as the two leaders sat across from each other. The atmosphere was relaxed, yet there was an undercurrent of strategy in their conversation.

Lie Fan began, his tone measured. ”It has been some time since we last met, Gongsun Gong. Your governance of the northeastern territories has been commendable. Now that your lands are connected to the rest of the domain, the opportunities for growth are immense.”

Gongsun Gong bowed his head slightly, a gesture of both respect and gratitude. ”It is only through your wisdom and support, my lord, that we have come this far. The consolidation of Beiping and Ji has strengthened our position. I eagerly await the influx of supplies and merchants, as you promised. With easier access to Goguryeo, we can solidify our ties and ensure a steady flow of trade.”

Lie Fan leaned forward, his gaze intent. ”Indeed. The merchant clans under my rule will soon expand their operations into your lands. This will not only benefit your region but also create a direct link with Goguryeo’s merchants. The trade routes we establish will bring wealth and stability. However, there is another matter I wish to discuss.”

Gongsun Gong’s expression grew attentive as Lie Fan continued. ”You have mentioned investigating the areas near Goguryeo for potential threats in one of the letters you have sent. This is a wise initiative. I will assign some of my most trusted individuals to assist you in this endeavor. Their expertise will ensure that we identify and neutralize any dangers before they arise.”

A broad smile spread across Gongsun Gong’s face. ”I am grateful, my lord. With your support, I am confident we can maintain order and even expand our influence. Rest assured, I will govern my land with the utmost diligence and ensure that Goguryeo remains cooperative.”

Lie Fan nodded, a faint smile playing on his lips. ”See that you do. Our strength lies in unity, but vigilance is key. I will send Oriole agents to aid your efforts. They are skilled in uncovering hidden threats and ensuring loyalty.”

Gongsun Gong’s excitement was palpable, though he remained unaware of Lie Fan’s deeper motives. For Lie Fan, the Oriole agents served a dual purpose, assisting Gongsun Gong in his investigations while monitoring him closely. Trust was essential, but so was caution.

Over the following days, the integration of the Gongsun Clan’s territory into Lie Fan’s domain progressed rapidly. Merchant caravans began traversing the newly connected routes, bringing goods from all parts of Lie Fan’s domain to the northeast and vice versa. Exotic wares from Goguryeo started appearing in much large number in the markets inside Lie Fan’s domain, drawing crowds eager to glimpse and purchase these foreign treasures.
