With Yuan Shao’s death, Lie Fan now loomed large in his mind as he is the only rival he had. Cao Cao had long recognized in him a kindred spirit, a man driven by ambition and an unyielding will to achieve greatness. Their paths would inevitably cross, and when they did, the outcome would shape the fate of the land.

Meanwhile, the whole land was abuzz with the shocking news of Yuan Shao’s demise and the rapid fall of his once-mighty domain. Yuan Shao, a warlord often counted among the three strongest in the land, had been toppled with such speed and decisiveness that it left everyone in disbelief. Whispers of his downfall spread like wildfire, reaching even the most remote villages and far-flung strongholds.

Liu Bei, upon hearing the news, was particularly shaken. He had struggled during this time to secure a single major town, Lingling, from the hands of Sun Ce and Shi Xie. Now, to see Lie Fan sweep through the north and consolidate an entire region, a feat many thought impossible, stirred an unspoken envy within him.

Despite his virtuous persona, Liu Bei could not help but feel the pang of inadequacy. Yet, he maintained his facade of a benevolent and righteous leader, offering words of admiration for Lie Fan’s success when speaking to his advisors.

”Lie Fan has accomplished what many of us could only dream of,” Liu Bei said, his tone laden with a mix of respect and veiled frustration. ”But we must remain steadfast. Our cause is just, and the people’s support will ensure our eventual triumph.”

In Chengdu, Liu Zhang reacted to the news with a mixture of surprise and relief. His advisors, Fa Zheng, Zhang Song, and Meng Da, were summoned immediately to discuss whether Lie Fan’s meteoric rise would pose a threat to their stronghold in the land of Shu. Fa Zheng, hearing what Liu Zhang said, was the one who spoke first.

”My lord, the land of Shu is a fortress unto itself. Its mountainous terrain and natural defenses make it nearly impenetrable. Lie Fan’s conquests in the north are impressive, but they will not easily translate to success here.”

Zhang Song nodded in agreement. ”Indeed, my lord. Shu is secure. For now, we should focus on fortifying our borders and ensuring the loyalty of our people.”

Meng Da added, ”Lie Fan’s ambitions may not yet stretch this far south. We should observe and prepare, but there is no immediate cause for alarm.”

Liu Zhang heaved a sigh of relief, trusting his advisors’ reassurances. However, unbeknownst to him, Fa Zheng, Zhang Song, and Meng Da had long harbored loyalties to Lie Fan. They viewed him as the future unifier of the land and silently awaited the day he would march on Shu. When that time came, they intended to deliver Liu Zhang’s domain into Lie Fan’s hands without resistance.

Shi Xie paced nervously in the grand hall of his capital, his mind swirling with the news of Lie Fan’s crushing victory over Yuan Shao and the rapid consolidation of the north. His advisors, who normally filled the chamber with suggestions and strategies, were uncharacteristically quiet, sensing their lord’s inner turmoil.

Shi Xie finally stopped and faced them. ”Lie Fan’s strength has grown beyond what any of us imagined. His armies, his resources, his strategies—none can compare. Even Cao Cao, with all his cunning, cannot rival this new force.”

One advisor, an elder statesman named Wu Can, hesitated before speaking. ”My lord, Lie Fan’s rise is indeed formidable, but it is not yet certain that he seeks to unify the land. His focus may remain on solidifying his holdings in the north and east.”

Shi Xie shook his head, his expression grim. ”And what if he does turn his gaze south? Our forces are diminished, our coffers drained. After our loss at Lingling, we are but a shadow of what we once were. Should Lie Fan decide to expand further, how could we possibly withstand him?”

Another advisor, Shi Hui, spoke cautiously. ”Perhaps, my lord, it is time to consider aligning with Lie Fan. His generosity toward the Sun Clan has shown that he values loyalty and partnership. A gesture of submission now could preserve your domain and ensure your legacy.”

Shi Xie clenched his fists, the suggestion cutting at his pride. ”Submit? To a man who was once no more than a minor governor? Have we truly fallen so low?”

Wu Can stepped forward, his voice calm but firm. ”My lord, the Sun Clan chose their path wisely. They have flourished under Lie Fan’s support by allying with him, while we struggle to recover from defeat. Pride is a luxury we can no longer afford. If survival is our goal, then aligning with the strongest force in the land may be our only option.”

Shi Xie sighed deeply, the weight of the decision pressing down on him. ”Let us observe him further. If he continues to rise, we will send envoys to gauge his intentions. Until then, we must focus on rebuilding what we can.”

Meanwhile, in the Sun Clan’s capital, Sun Ce and Sun Jian sat at a low table in a sunlit courtyard, enjoying tea with their trusted advisors Zhang Zhao, Zhang Hong, and Huan Jie. The atmosphere was light, their conversation centered on the remarkable success of the agricultural reforms implemented with Lie Fan’s assistance.

”The new tools and techniques have transformed our lands,” Zhang Zhao said, his tone filled with admiration. ”What was once barren now yields abundance. Our people are well-fed, and our coffers grow heavier with each harvest.”

Sun Jian nodded, his expression one of satisfaction. ”Lie Fan’s aid has been invaluable. Without his support, we might still be struggling to maintain our armies and feed our people.”

Sun Ce smirked, leaning back with a confident air. ”It was a gamble to align with him, but one that has paid off handsomely. His vision for the land aligns with ours, prosperity through strength and innovation.”

As they spoke, a messenger rushed into the courtyard, bowing deeply before addressing them. ”My lords, urgent news from the north! Yuan Shao has fallen. Lie Fan has claimed his territories and now controls the largest domain in the land.”

The announcement brought the conversation to an abrupt halt. Sun Ce’s confident demeanor faltered for a moment as he processed the gravity of the news. Zhang Zhao and Zhang Hong exchanged glances, their expressions a mixture of astonishment and concern.

”It seems we aligned ourselves just in time,” Sun Ce finally said, his voice steady but tinged with awe. ”No one could have predicted that Yuan Shao would fall so quickly. Lie Fan’s power is now unmatched.”

Zhang Hong nodded. ”This changes the landscape of the entire realm. With Yuan Shao gone, only Cao Cao stands as a potential rival to Lie Fan. But even Cao Cao must tread carefully now.”

Huan Jie, ever the pragmatist, leaned forward. ”We must ensure that our allegiance remains firm and visible. Lie Fan has shown favor to those who support him, but he is also known to deal harshly with those who falter. Our continued prosperity depends on maintaining his trust.”

Sun Jian, who had remained silent during the exchange, finally spoke. ”This is no time for complacency. We must strengthen our own position within his sphere of influence. If Lie Fan moves to unify the land, we must ensure that the Sun Clan is seen as an indispensable ally.”

Sun Ce grinned, his confidence returning. ”Agreed. Let us send a formal envoy to congratulate him on his victory and reaffirm our loyalty. At the same time, we will continue to develop our lands and build our armies. If we play our cards right, the Sun Clan will rise alongside Lie Fan.”

Back in Zhongshan, the town was abuzz with the anticipation of justice. The fall of the Yuan family had left a bitter taste in the mouths of the people, who had long suffered under the oppressive yoke of Yuan Shao and his sons.

Now, the remaining scions of that once-mighty clan, Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang, were to face the judgment of the law. The trial was to be held publicly in the main square of Zhongshan, a testament to Lie Fan’s commitment to transparency and fairness, even if the outcome was already all but certain.

Lie Fan presided over the court, seated on a raised dais adorned with the symbols of his authority. Flanked by his trusted advisors, Sima Yi and Xun You, who acted as prosecutors, he maintained an air of solemnity that commanded the attention of the crowd.

The people of Zhongshan filled the square, their expressions a mixture of anger and grim satisfaction. For them, this was not just a trial but a cathartic reckoning for years of suffering.

Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang stood at the center of the square, their faces pale but defiant. They were dressed in simple garments, stripped of the finery that once symbolized their noble status.

No lawyers were assigned to them, a decision that underscored the inevitability of their fate. They were left to defend themselves, a task made all the more difficult by the palpable hostility of the crowd.

Sima Yi began the proceedings with a sharp, precise indictment of the Yuan brothers. His voice was calm but carried a cutting edge that left no doubt about the gravity of their crimes. ”The defendants, Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang, stand accused of treason, corruption, and the exploitation of the people. Their actions have led to countless deaths, widespread suffering, and the destabilization of the northern territories. They have betrayed the trust of their subjects and abused the privileges of their noble station.”

Xun You followed, his tone measured but equally damning. ”The evidence against them is overwhelming. Testimonies from their former subjects, records of their misdeeds, and the devastation they have wrought speak for themselves. Their attempt to resist the righteous authority of Lie Fan has further compounded their guilt.”

The crowd murmured in agreement, their anger rising with every word. Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang, sensing the futility of their situation, attempted to defend themselves.

Yuan Tan spoke first, his voice trembling with desperation. ”I am innocent of these charges! It was my brother, Yuan Shang, who orchestrated the policies that led to the people’s suffering. I merely followed orders as a dutiful son and subordinate.”

Yuan Shang’s face contorted with fury as he turned on his brother. ”Liar! You were the one who controlled the troops and enforced those brutal policies. Do not dare lay the blame at my feet to save your own skin!”

Their bickering only served to heighten the contempt of the crowd. The people’s resentment, simmering for years, boiled over as they jeered and shouted insults at the brothers. It was a scene of complete humiliation for the once-proud scions of the Yuan family.
