Chapter 243: Chapter 242: The Calm Before the Storm

---

It was six in the evening, the village was in hues of orange and violet because of the sun setting. The lanterns along the main street flickered to life, casting a warm, inviting glow over the busy crowd.

Haku walked slowly, savoring the feeling of solid ground beneath his feet after a month of frictionless sliding and gravity-defying maneuvers.

He wasn’t wearing his heavy training gear, just his standard casual kimono. To the passersby, he looked like any other civilian... a pretty boy enjoying a stroll.

But inside, his senses were a roar of information.

The Ashura no Mon seal on his back, now fully integrated with his chakra network, acted like a sonar. He didn’t just see the mother holding her child’s hand three shops down; he heard the rhythmic thump of their hearts. He didn’t just see the steam rising from the dango shop; he could smell the individual ingredients in the sauce from fifty meters away.

’Peace,’ Haku thought, watching a pair of Chunin haggle over the price of radishes. ’This village... it is soft. But there is strength in that softness.’

He stopped at a stall selling takoyaki. The vendor, an old man with a kind smile, handed him a steaming boat of octopus balls.

”Careful, it’s hot!”

Haku took a bite. The heat would have burned a normal tongue, but he simply regulated the thermal energy in his mouth instantly. ”It is delicious. Thank you.”

He continued walking, the warmth of the food settling in his stomach. He hadn’t realized how much he yearned this... the simple, mundane act of living.

He turned into the quiet residential district, arriving at the modest house assigned to them. He slid the door open.

”I’m home!”

Inside, the living room was dim. Zabuza sat at the low table, a half-empty bottle of sake in front of him. The Demon of the Hidden Mist was yawning, looking more like a tired uncle than an S-rank missing-nin.

Zabuza froze mid-yawn. He blinked, looking at the open door, then down at Haku who was removing his sandals.

His eyes narrowed. He put the sake cup down slowly.

”Haku?” Zabuza asked, his voice rough.

”Yes, Zabuza-sama?” Haku walked into the room, placing the takoyaki on the table. ”I brought dinner.”

Zabuza stared at him. He scanned the boy with his senses... honed by decades of killing in the silent mist.

Nothing.

Visually, Haku was standing right there. But to Zabuza’s chakra sense, the space in front of him was empty. It was like staring at a ghost. There was no killing intent, no chakra fluctuation, not even the sound of breathing until Haku chose to be heard.

”Heh,” Zabuza let out a short, sharp chuckle, shaking his head. He reached for a takoyaki, popping it into his mouth.

”Every time you come back with that blonde bastard,” Zabuza grunted, chewing thoughtfully, ”you get so much stronger. It’s starting to piss me off.”

Haku smiled, a genuine expression that reached his eyes. ”I just had a good teacher.”

”Yeah, yeah,” Zabuza waved him off, pouring another cup. ”Eat. You look like you haven’t slept in a month.”

Above the village, the night sky was clear, the stars twinkling innocently above the village.

High above the Hokage Rock, a figure floated in the air, defying gravity with casual ease. Alaric lay on his back as if resting on an invisible hammock, his crimson coat fluttering gently in the high-altitude wind.

”Peaceful,” Alaric murmured, looking down at the grid of lights below. ”Too bad it’s about to get loud.”

His eyes shifted, zooming in on the roof of the Hokage Tower.

There, standing in the cool night breeze, was a gathering of Konoha’s elite. Hiruzen Sarutobi stood at the center, flanked by Kakashi, Asuma, Kurenai, and Guy. A dozen other Jonin and ANBU captains knelt in the shadows.

”Guess that’s my cue.”

Alaric rolled over in mid-air and dropped.

”The shifts for the stadium security have been finalized,” Asuma was saying, holding a clipboard. ”But we’re still short on the perimeter sensors.”

”We’ll have to rely on the Hyuga clan for that,” Hiruzen said, puffing on his pipe. ”I’ve already spoken to Hiashi.”

Kakashi looked up, his eye narrowing. ”Incoming.”

The Jonin tensed, hands going to their weapons.

Thump.

Alaric landed softly in the center of the group, dust barely rising from his boots. He straightened up, adjusting his coat.

”Yo,” Alaric greeted, raising a hand. ”Nice night for a secret meeting.”

”Alaric,” Hiruzen didn’t flinch. In fact, he looked relieved. ”Your timing is impeccable as always.”

”I try,” Alaric grinned, looking around at the tense faces of the Jonin. Guy gave him a thumbs up; Kurenai looked curious; Asuma looked tired.

”We were just discussing the logistics for tomorrow,” Hiruzen said, his face hardening. ”The finals. And the invasion.”

Alaric raised a brow, nodding slowly. ”So, you’re finally calling it what it is. An invasion.”

”We have confirmed reports,” Hiruzen said grimly. ”Wind Country troops moving toward the border. Sound Ninja infiltrating the village under civilian disguises. And... Orochimaru.”

The name hung in the air like a curse.

”It’s going to happen tomorrow, during the finals,” Hiruzen continued. ”Konoha will be a battlefield.”

He looked at Alaric, his old eyes sharp and commanding.

”Join us in the meeting,” Hiruzen said, gesturing to the circle of elites. ”Seeing as you’re a Jonin of Konoha... I expect you to earn that paycheck I gave you.”

Alaric chuckled, stepping forward to stand beside Kakashi.

”Don’t worry, old man,” Alaric smirked, lighting a fresh cigar. ”I plan to get my money’s worth.”
