Chapter 242: Chapter 241: One Month Training

---Konoha Hospital - Recovering Room---

The dust of the preliminaries had barely settled when the official bracket for the final round was posted in the hospital lobby, where most of the genin were recuperating.

In the lobby, the final tournament bracket had been posted on a simple wooden board.

Naruto Uzumaki vs. Neji Hyūga

Sasuke Uchiha vs. Gaara of the Desert

Shino Aburame vs. Haku Yuki

Shikamaru Nara vs. Temari

Kankurō’s name was absent... his preliminary match had ended in mutual incapacitation, removing both combatants.

”Shino Aburame,” Haku whispered. The quiet one with the bugs. ”A logical fighter.”

”Stop staring,” Alaric’s voice cut through Haku’s focus. The tall man was leaning against the doorframe, twirling a sealed scroll in his hand. ”The bracket doesn’t matter. Your opponent isn’t Shino. Your opponent is the ceiling of your own potential.”

Alaric pushed off the wall, his expression serious. ”We have thirty days. Pack your things. We’re leaving the village proper.”

They departed Konoha through a seldom-used eastern gate and traveled three hours into the deep forest until the village was very far.

The Training Ground - Deep Forest Sector 44 (Restricted Zone)

’So I’ll train in where I did the second phase of the exams,’ Haku thought, looking around, before silently nodding in understanding. ’Cool...’

They arrived at a secluded gorge where a massive waterfall crashed into a deep, rocky basin. The noise was deafening, drowning out the world.

”Twenty-nine days of hell,” Alaric announced, his voice cutting through the roar of the water. ”Rest will be on the last day. We don’t sleep more than two hours a night. The Ashura no Mon will handle the biological fatigue. Your mind is the only thing that can break.

Alaric unrolled the scroll he had been carrying. Putting a miniscule amount of chakra on the paper, he unsealed the contents. Kai.

Smoke hissed, revealing a set of black, metallic bands. They looked simple, almost innocuous.

”Strip down to your training gear,” Alaric ordered.

Haku complied, removing his heavy outer coat. Alaric picked up the bands. They didn’t clink like metal; they hit the ground with a heavy, muted thud that cracked the stone beneath them.

He strapped them onto Haku’s ankles, wrists, and a heavy belt around his waist.

The moment the final seal locked, gravity redoubled.

Haku’s knees slammed into the rock. Breath exploded from his lungs. His vision tunneled. Every tendon screamed; every organ felt compressed into half its size.

He tried to stand... but could not.

Alaric watched his student struggling, allowing Haku to have some time adapting.

”These weights... are heavier... than Lee’s... I pressume?” Haku rasped, forcing the words through clenched teeth.

Alaric inclined his head once. ”Correct... and you will wear them for twenty-nine days straight.”

”Lee trains for endurance and explosive power,” Alaric said, walking around his struggling student. ”I am training you for dominance. so yes, they are heavier. Significantly so.”

Haku gritted his teeth, his legs were trembling violently. He forced himself to stand upright. The Ashura no Mon seal on his back flared hot, pumping regenerative chakra into his micro-tearing muscles, knitting them back together stronger, instantly.

”Walk,” Alaric commanded.

The Hyoton user rose. One inch. Two. Spine straight. Knees locked.

Alaric’s eyes held no approval... only measurement. He wasn’t here to comfort his student nor to babysit. Haku only had one month to get his desired result.

”Walk to the waterfall and back. Begin.”

---

For the first week, Haku existed in a state of constant, grinding agony. Every movement was a war against gravity. But the seal was a miracle engine. It fueled a hyper-accelerated evolution, but despite that, Haku’s mind reeled from constant pain.

Haku crawled on the third day. On the fifth, he walked slow, shaking, but upright. On the seventh, he managed a labored jog across the basin.

The seal worked ceaselessly. Muscle fibers tore and regrew denser. Bones micro-fractured and recalcified stronger. Tendons thickened. Capillaries multiplied. The weights never became lighter; Haku’s body simply ceased to acknowledge them as limits.

On the evening of the seventh day, he stood before Alaric without tremor.

”I move at my previous baseline speed,” Haku reported, voice calm. ”While wearing them.”

Alaric nodded once. ”Good, that means you’ve stabilized. Tomorrow we break the ceiling... ready yourself.”

---Week Two---

Alaric forbade running.

”You do not run like Lee,” he said. ”You do not rely on torque and you don’t need to focus on endurance as the regeneration will naturally build it for you. You arrive. Friction is your enemy. Eliminate it.”

The new regimen began at dawn.

Haku learned to coat the soles of his feet with an atom-thin layer of ice... perfectly frictionless, formed and shattered in the same instant. Propulsion came not from pushing against the ground, but from explosive directional chakra bursts released from his tenketsu.

The first attempts were catastrophic. He overshot, slammed into granite walls, rebounded helplessly. Blood streaked the mist.

Alaric offered no aid... only observation. He knew his student is a genius that surpasses lots of people. And... this was the first time he had a shinobi student so he couldn’t give Haku the treatment he gave Thulani and Reuben, who were normal people at first.

By day ten, Haku could cross the basin in three bursts without touching the ground more than thrice.

By day twelve, he learned mid-air redirection... manifesting small, angled ice mirrors as momentum anchors. A kick against the mirror transferred velocity at perfect efficiency; the mirror shattered an instant later, leaving no trace.

He began to move in straight lines and perfect angles... like light refracted through prisms. No curves. No wasted motion.

Alaric increased the difficulty relentlessly. Wood Release constructs erupted from every surface... vines, spears, walls... forcing Haku to chain ten, fifteen, twenty ricochets without landing.

On the night of the fourteenth day, Haku crossed the entire gorge and returned in the space of a single heartbeat. Afterimages lingered in the mist like frozen ghosts.

”You are no longer bound by terrain. Good.” Alaric finally spoke approval. ”Now we train for monsters.”

---Week Three---

Alaric became Gaara.

Wood Release morphed into shifting sand-like tendrils, totally copying Gaara’s... slow to accelerate, but relentless, automatic, responding to killing intent and proximity.

”The sand armor reacts after threat detection,” Alaric lectured, voice cold. ”There is delay. Exploit it.”

He taught Haku to move without intent until the final meter... chakra signature suppressed, killing will held back until the instant of arrival.

He taught thermal shock: infusing strikes with cold chakra a fraction before impact, flash-freezing sand grains, disrupting chakra cohesion, turning armor brittle.

He taught mirror feints: manifesting dozens of small mirrors simultaneously, each emitting false chakra signatures, overwhelming automatic defenses with decoys while the real strike came from an impossible vector.

The training was merciless. Alaric’s constructs crushed Haku against walls, pierced skin, fractured ribs. The seal healed everything within hours, but pain accumulated in the mind.

Haku learned to strike before the sand fully formed intent. He learned to arrive inside the defense radius before the armor could mobilize. He learned to shatter cohesion with cold, then follow with a senbon coated in freezing chakra directly to tenketsu.

On day twenty-one, Alaric’s sand construct managed only a half-formed shield before Haku’s palm struck its core. The entire simulation froze solid and shattered into glittering dust.

Alaric dispelled the jutsu. Silence fell, broken only by the waterfall.

”You now possess the tools to kill a one-tailed Jinchūriki before it fully awakens,” he said quietly. ”Do not waste them on Shino Aburame.”

---Week Four---

The final eight days were not about learning new techniques. They were about making the impossible feel trivial.

Alaric removed all restrictions. Haku trained at full output from dawn to exhaustion... chaining hundreds of micro-teleports, striking phantom Gaaras from every angle, moving so quickly that the mist itself lagged behind him.

His reaction time compressed to instants. His battlefield control became absolute... he dictated angles, distances, tempo.

The weights remained. They were no longer burdens; they were calibration tools, ensuring every motion remained perfectly efficient.

On the evening of the twenty-ninth day, Alaric stood atop the highest cliff. Haku stood at the basin floor two hundred meters below.

”No jutsu announcement,” Alaric called down. ”Full intent. Kill me.”

Haku exhaled once. Frost bloomed from his breath.

Then he moved.

There was no sound of departure... only a sharp crack of displaced air arriving at Alaric’s position a heartbeat later.

Haku materialized behind his teacher, senbon of ice pressed to the base of Alaric’s skull. Four shattered mirrors hung frozen in the air along his path, marking perfect ricochet points.

The wind from his passage arrived two full seconds later, whipping Alaric’s coat forward.

Despite that, Alaric did not flinch.

”Time?” Haku asked softly.

”Zero point four eight seconds,” Alaric answered. ”Lee required the Fifth Gate... and near-fatal injury... to achieve comparable burst velocity.”

He turned, meeting Haku’s eyes.

”You did it at resting heart rate. Without tearing a single fiber.”

Haku lowered the senbon. His hand did not shake.

Alaric placed a hand on his shoulder.... a rare physical contact.

”You are no longer the boy who needed Zabuza to survive. I hope that at least with this training... it’ll help you find the path you seek.”

---Day 30---

The final day was silent. No training. No weights... Alaric had removed them the night before, and Haku had spent the first hour simply marveling at how light his own body felt. He felt as if he could jump into the stratosphere.

They sat by the campfire, eating a simple meal.

”You’ve changed,” Alaric noted, poking the fire with a stick. ’His Chakra and Chakra control has gotten even better... at least when it comes to long fights, he’ll persevere.’

”Hm... I don’t know...” Haku looked at his hands. They were calloused, scarred, but steady. ”I was a tool, Sensei. Then a student. Now...”

”Now?”

”Now I am the ice,” Haku said softly. ”Oh, but I’m not saying I’m no longer your student. I mean-”

”Relax, I know what you mean.” Alaric smiled, a genuine, proud expression. ”Tomorrow is the finals. Don’t hold back. Show them what it means to train under Alaric Jonathan Kenway.”

Haku bowed his head, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying resolve.

”I will give them a show they will never forget.”
