Chapter 238: Chapter 237: The Serpent and the Anomaly

---The Tower - Central Hall---

Five days had passed since the start of the second exam. The central hall, once empty save for Haku and the Sand siblings, was now buzzing with a low, nervous energy as more teams trickled in.

Most were battered, bruised, and on the verge of collapse.

Just as the sun began to dip below the horizon on the final day, the heavy doors creaked open. Team 7 stumbled inside.

Naruto was supporting a limping Sasuke, and Sakura looked like she hadn’t slept in a week, her hair unevenly chopped and her eyes haunted. They were a mess of dried blood, dirt, and exhaustion.

Kakashi Hatake appeared in a swirl of leaves, his single eye widening slightly as he took in the state of his students.

’They made it,’ he thought, relief washing over him, quickly followed by a heavy pang of guilt. ’But look at them. I threw them into the deep end too soon.’

He recalled the Third Hokage’s grim warning from days ago. Orochimaru. The Curse Mark.

He walked over, his usual laid-back demeanor replaced by a quiet seriousness. ”Yo. You guys look terrible.”

”Kakashi-sensei!” Sakura teared up, looking ready to collapse into his arms.

”We made it, believe it!” Naruto grinned, though he winced as he shifted his weight.

Kakashi patted Naruto’s head, but his gaze was fixed on Sasuke. The boy was pale, sweating profusely, and clutching his neck where a sinister black seal pulsed faintly.

”Sasuke,” Kakashi said, his voice leaving no room for argument. ”Come with me.”

---The Secluded Chamber---

Kakashi led Sasuke deep into the bowels of the tower, to a ritual room used for sealing ceremonies. It was dark, illuminated only by a few flickering candles.

”Take off your shirt,” Kakashi ordered.

Sasuke hesitated, then complied. The three-tomoe Curse Mark on his neck looked angry and inflamed against his pale skin.

”That mark...” Kakashi murmured, kneeling to inspect it. ”It’s giving you power, isn’t it? But it’s also eating away at you.”

”It makes me strong,” Sasuke grit his teeth, his hand trembling.

”It makes you a slave,” Kakashi corrected. ”We need to seal it. It won’t remove the mark, but it will help you control it. If you let it rampage, it will consume you. And you won’t be able to achieve your ambition.”

Sasuke clenched his fist. He hated the idea of suppressing power, but he remembered the loss of control in the forest. He remembered Haku putting him down like a child.

”Fine,” Sasuke spat. ”Do it.”

Kakashi nodded. ”Lie down.”

As Sasuke lay on the stone altar, drifting into a meditative trance induced by Kakashi, the candles in the room flickered violently.

A cold, reptilian presence flooded the chamber. It smelled of damp earth and snakes.

”Are you about to perform a sealing jutsu?”

The voice was raspy, sliding over Kakashi’s nerves like sandpaper.

Kakashi didn’t turn. He stiffened, his hand hovering over his kunai pouch. ”Orochimaru.”

”You’ve grown, Kakashi,” the Sannin stepped out from the shadows, his golden snake eyes gleaming with amusement. ”To think the boy who used to follow Minato around is now playing sensei.”

Kakashi spun around, lightning chirping to life in his hand. The blue glow not of the Chidori... but the Raikiri... illuminated the dark room.

”Don’t come any closer!” Kakashi warned, his sharingan spinning wildly. ”I may not be your match, but I can take you down with me if I have to.”

Orochimaru paused, a mocking smile playing on his pale lips. He took a confident step forward, completely unbothered by the assassination technique.

”My, my. So fierce. But you know you can’t-”

Orochimaru stopped mid-sentence. His eyes widened, pupils constricting into slits. He whipped his head to the side, looking at a darkened corner of the room that should have been empty.

”Yo,” Alaric said.

The blonde man was leaning against a pillar, a lit cigar in his hand, looking for all the world like he was watching a boring play.

”Who are you!?” Orochimaru’s voice rose, losing its composure.

He hadn’t sensed him. He, a legendary Sannin, a master of stealth and detection, hadn’t felt a whisper of chakra, a breath of air, or even a heartbeat until the man spoke.

”It’s useless to ask,” Alaric replied, blowing a stream of smoke toward the snake. ”I know you’re not here to fight. You’re just here to brag. To check on your little investment.”

Orochimaru stared at him, his mind racing. He analyzed the man... the crimson coat, the relaxed posture, the complete lack of fear.

”My, my,” Orochimaru regained his smirk, though his muscles remained coiled. ”I didn’t know there was such an interesting fellow in the village. Are you another one of Sarutobi-sensei’s watchdogs?”

”Watchdog?” Alaric chuckled, pushing himself off the pillar. ”No. I’m just the guy who cleans up the mess.”

He took a step forward. ”You should leave, snake. Before I decide to make this permanent.”

”Is that a threat?” Orochimaru hissed, his killing intent flaring.

”It’s a promise,” Alaric said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. ”I know how you work. Curse marks. Soul fragments. Anchors to keep you immortal.”

Alaric grinned, a terrifying expression that didn’t reach his eyes. ”I can kill you anytime I want, really. I could use the Shiki Fujin (Reaper Death Seal) on every soul fragment you have planted on anybody. I could rip you out of this world, piece by piece, from the comfort of my living room.”

The silence that followed was deafening.

Kakashi, with his raikiri cancelled, stared at Alaric, sweat trickling down his mask. The Reaper Death Seal? That forbidden jutsu? He can use it remotely?

Orochimaru froze. A bead of sweat rolled down his pale temple. The threat was specific. Too specific. This stranger knew the mechanics of his immortality... mechanics he hadn’t told a soul. And if he truly could target the soul fragments...

Orochimaru weighed his options. He was injured from his fight with the Third (in the future) and currently limited by his vessel. Fighting Kakashi was one thing. Fighting an unknown variable who spoke of the Reaper like an old friend was another.

”Hmph,” Orochimaru scoffed, forcing a nonchalant shrug. ”You talk big. But I have no business with you today.”

He began to sink into the floor, melting into the shadows. ”We will meet again... stranger.”

”Don’t count on it,” Alaric waved him off.

Once the oppressive presence of the Sannin was gone, Alaric let out a sigh, looking at his cigar.

’Someone like Orochimaru... I can deal with him,’ Alaric thought, watching the spot where the snake vanished. ’He relies on tricks and fear. But what about the true monsters? Madara? Hashirama?’

He flexed his hand. ’I have their physique. I have their Taijutsu. But ultimately, they are the originals. I’m just a very expensive copy. Well... I do have my Phoenix rebirth, and close to unlimited stamina from the System...’

He made a mental note. ’I should probably buy the Tailed Beast chakra when I return to the shop... having a few reservoirs of Kurama’s chakra wouldn’t hurt.’

The Sealing

”Alaric...” Kakashi finally spoke, deactivating his Chidori. He looked at the blonde man with a mixture of awe and suspicion. ”Was that true? About the Reaper Death Seal?”

”Maybe, maybe not,” Alaric winked. ”Bluffing is part of the ninja arts, isn’t it?”

He walked over to the stone altar where Sasuke lay unconscious.

”Now, let’s fix this mess. I assume Hiruzen told you I’d be handling the heavy lifting?”

”He did,” Kakashi nodded, stepping back. ”He said you would ’purify’ the mark.”

Alaric stood over Sasuke. He didn’t draw ink. He didn’t unroll a scroll. He simply raised his hand.

Chakra flooded the room... dense, potent, and gold.

Alaric began to move his fingers in the air. Trails of golden light followed his fingertips, hanging suspended in the void. He was writing Fuinjutsu formulas directly onto the atmosphere.

Kanji for ’Purify’. Kanji for ’Soul’. Kanji for ’Bind’.

”This is...” Kakashi’s visible eye widened to the size of a saucer. He watched as Alaric wove a three-dimensional matrix of glowing seals in mid-air.

’Impossible,’ Kakashi screamed internally. ’Sealing jutsu requires a medium! Ink, paper, blood, skin! He’s conjuring the formula on nothing but chakra control! Not even Minato-sensei... not even Kushina-sama could do this!’

It was a display of mastery that defied the laws of ninjutsu.

”Hold him down,” Alaric commanded softly.

Kakashi snapped out of his daze and rushed to pin Sasuke’s shoulders.

Alaric slammed his hand down. The floating golden matrix collapsed, shrinking rapidly until it impacted Sasuke’s neck, directly over the Curse Mark.

”AAAAAAHHHHHH!”

Sasuke screamed. It was a raw, guttural sound of agony that tore from his throat, even in his unconscious state. His body arched off the table, fighting against Kakashi’s grip. The black markings of the curse mark flared angrily, trying to reject the golden seal.

”He’s reacting violently!” Kakashi shouted over the screams.

”Relax,” Alaric said calmly, keeping his hand pressed firmly on the seal. Smoke hissed from beneath his fingers. ”It’s normal. The Curse Mark is fighting back. It’s trying to protect the piece of Orochimaru inside.”

Alaric’s eyes glowed blue. ”But it won’t last long. Ban (Expel).”

A final pulse of golden light washed over Sasuke. A faint, ethereal hiss... like a dying snake... echoed in the room, and then silence.

Sasuke slumped back onto the stone, panting heavily in his sleep. The Curse Mark was still there, but the angry redness was gone, replaced by a ring of elegant, calming kanji that Alaric had branded around it.

”It is done,” Alaric said, wiping his hands as if he had just finished washing dishes. ”The power is still there, but the snake is gone. He can use it freely now... if his body can handle it.”

”I do suggest you give him lots of body conditioning from now on... well that’s up to you.”
