The Duke's Pampered Darling is So Scheming

Chapter 193: Chapter 193: A Charmed Life

Emperor Muwu’s expression was cold and grim.

Back then, he had angrily banished Ye Zheng from the capital over the affair with Huo Yucheng, never expecting his family would meet with a tragic accident.

But now... it seemed there was more to the story!

”Do you have any evidence for this speculation?”

Su Wei paused before answering, ”Yes. If I’m not mistaken, the evidence is at the Han Family’s residence.”

His words stunned everyone present.

”The Han Family?” Emperor Muwu frowned.

Su Wei nodded. ”If Ye Heng was truly behind this, he would never have kept any evidence or clues himself. But the fact that Han Yao dared to blackmail Ye Heng multiple times suggests he might be holding crucial proof.”

He paused again. ”Therefore, your humble servant beseeches Second Miss Ye to intervene. We must ensure Han Yao’s life is preserved. Once he awakens, I believe the whole truth will come to light.”

Hearing this, the Eldest Princess let out a long sigh.

”If this really clears things up, we can finally give Chutang and the others some closure.”

Xiao Chengxuan suddenly interjected, ”In that case, why not send men to search the Han residence directly?”

Su Wei bowed his head slightly. ”Your humble servant did indeed have this in mind, but I await Your Majesty’s decision.”

”Search!” Emperor Muwu ordered in a low voice. ”Send men at once! Tear the place apart if you have to, but find that evidence!”

Xiao Chengxuan moved as if to stand. ”Father, your son is willing to—”

”Yanchuan, you go!” Emperor Muwu cut Xiao Chengxuan off.

Since it was Shen Yanchuan who had taken the initiative to request a thorough investigation into Ye Zheng’s death, it was only fitting that he be the one to take charge.

The expression on Xiao Chengxuan’s face stiffened.

Shen Yanchuan, seemingly oblivious to the prince’s instantly soured expression, rose and bowed. ”I will not fail Your Majesty’s trust.”

...

Lan Yue Building.

After three rounds of drinks, Ye Yunfeng showed no signs of intoxication. His long, narrow, ink-black eyes only grew sharper and clearer.

Beside him, Ye Jingyan sat quietly, appearing composed, but the deep flush of his neck revealed he was struggling to hold his liquor.

An evening breeze drifted in, scattering some of the smell of alcohol.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted from the street below.

Ye Yunfeng leaned out to take a look. ”What’s going on...”

Just as he spoke, a panicked shout rose from the street.

”Help! There’s a fire!”

Ye Chutang tilted her head slightly and saw flames lighting up the sky and thick smoke billowing from a certain direction outside the window.

The people on the street were in a panic.

Ye Yunfeng froze for a moment, then whipped his head around. ”Big Sis, is that—”

Ye Chutang gave a slight nod.

”The Han residence.”

”Big Sis, that fire at the Han residence looks serious! We should hurry over!” Ye Yunfeng said anxiously, staring at the soaring flames. ”Han Yao is half-dead as it is. If he dies in that fire, all our efforts will be for nothing!”

Ye Chutang took a slow, deliberate sip of her tea, one elegant eyebrow arched and a faint smile playing on her lips.

”What’s the rush? A scourge lasts a thousand years. He’s not that easy to kill; he’ll be fine.”

...

By now, the Han residence had descended into chaos.

Soaring flames, billowing smoke, and a mixture of screams and cries painted a scene of utter devastation.

A massive crowd had gathered outside the Han residence, packed several layers deep, all murmuring amongst themselves.

”How did the Han residence suddenly catch fire?”

”I don’t know! They say the fire was already huge by the time anyone discovered it!”

”I just saw a few people run out in a panic. They looked like servants from the Han household. Who knows who’s still inside...”

”I don’t think they can control this fire. Someone needs to get in there and rescue people!”

”Easier said than done! With a fire that big, rushing in now would be suicide. Besides, the Han Family was about to fall anyway. Maybe dying in there is a release for them! I heard that Han Tong is set to be executed tomorrow. At a time like this, who would be willing to help?”

”Exactly... For all we know, Han Yao might end up dying before his old man!”
