Journey to Become the Zenith

A Circle Tightens, Silence Breaks

Once class was over, the tension that had lingered around Videl didn’t disappear—it simply changed shape.

The students began to move, chairs scraping softly against the polished floor, voices rising again in casual chatter. The heavy atmosphere from earlier loosened, but for Videl, it hadn’t left at all. It clung to her like something invisible... something stubborn.

She had barely stepped out into the corridor when her friends approached her.

Niva was the first.

Her long red hair swayed as she moved quickly, her sharp eyes narrowing slightly—not in anger, but in concern. There was a subtle urgency in her steps, the kind that came from someone who noticed things others didn’t.

”Hey... what was that back there?” Niva asked, her voice lower than usual, careful. Not accusing. Just... worried.

Kira followed beside her, silver-white hair catching the light, her gaze softer but no less attentive. Dira trailed just a step behind, golden eyes quietly studying Videl like she was trying to read something beneath the surface.

They didn’t crowd her.

They didn’t press her.

But they were there.

And they were watching.

Videl paused for half a second.

Just half.

Her fingers curled slightly at her sides before she forced them to relax. Her face remained calm—too calm.

”Nothing,” she said.

Simple.

Flat.

Controlled.

The word dropped between them like a stone into still water.

Niva’s eyes narrowed just a little more.

She wasn’t convinced.

Kira tilted her head slightly, studying Videl’s expression. Dira crossed her arms loosely, her gaze lingering.

They knew her.

Not deeply—but enough.

Enough to realize that ”nothing” never really meant nothing.

But still...

They didn’t push.

Niva exhaled softly, her shoulders relaxing just a fraction. ”If you say so.”

Kira gave a small shrug, a faint smile touching her lips. ”You’re not the type to break for no reason anyway.”

Dira didn’t say anything—but her eyes lingered a second longer before she finally looked away.

They let it go.

Or at least—

They pretended to.

And Videl noticed.

Of course she did.

That small act—their decision not to pry—stirred something quiet in her chest.

A strange mix of relief... and something else.

Something heavier.

They began walking together down the corridor.

The academy halls were alive again—students passing by, conversations overlapping, the faint echo of boots against stone. Sunlight filtered through tall windows, casting long shadows across the polished floor.

Niva nudged Videl lightly with her elbow. ”You spaced out hard back there.”

Kira smirked faintly. ”Yeah. Looked like you were about to punch the air or something.”

Dira added quietly, ”Or run out of class.”

Videl huffed softly, though there was no real annoyance in it. ”I didn’t.”

”Almost did,” Niva teased.

A faint smile flickered across Videl’s lips.

Just for a moment.

It wasn’t real peace.

But it was something.

And then—

It changed.

The noise in the corridor shifted.

Subtly.

Like a ripple spreading through water.

Footsteps slowed.

Voices lowered.

A space began to open ahead of them—not by accident, but by intent.

Videl felt it before she saw it.

That instinct.

That quiet warning.

She lifted her gaze.

And there they were.

Students.

A group of them.

Standing in front of them.

Blocking the path.

More gathered from the sides, closing in—not aggressively, not yet—but enough to form a circle.

Tight.

Deliberate.

Unmistakable.

The air grew heavier.

The earlier warmth vanished.

And from that group—

One person stepped forward.

She was tall.

Her posture straight, rigid—like someone who had trained herself to stand firm no matter what stood before her.

Her expression was stern, sharp enough to cut.

She wore armor—mass-produced, identical to many others in the academy—but there was something about the way she carried it. The design mirrored that of the greatest female hero to have ever lived.

A symbol.

A statement.

Her gaze locked onto Videl.

Cold.

Focused.

Unwavering.

There was no confusion there.

No hesitation.

Only intent.

Trouble.

Before Videl could even react—

Niva stepped forward.

Smooth.

Immediate.

Her body moved without hesitation, placing herself between Videl and the approaching girl.

Her stance wasn’t aggressive.

But it was firm.

Protective.

”What do you want, Lisa?” Niva asked.

Her tone was calm—but beneath it, there was steel.

Lisa’s eyes flicked to Niva, irritation flashing across her face like a brief spark.

”This has nothing to do with you, Niva,” she said, her voice tight. ”So I suggest you move aside.”

The students behind her shifted slightly, murmurs rising like distant thunder. Agitation was building—not loud, but present.

Niva didn’t move.

Not even an inch.

”Oh, but it does have something to do with me,” she replied, her voice steady, unwavering. ”This person here is my friend.”

Her chin lifted slightly.

”And as someone who aspires to be a knight... loyalty isn’t optional.”

A brief pause.

Then—

”So, Lisa... let me ask you again.”

Her eyes sharpened.

”What is it that you want?”

There it was.

Not just defense.

But challenge.

Kira stepped forward next, her silver hair catching the light as she moved to stand beside Niva. Her expression was calm—but her presence added weight.

Dira followed.

Quiet.

Silent.

But her golden eyes were locked onto the opposing group now, sharp and alert.

Three against many.

But none of them stepped back.

Lisa clicked her tongue softly, irritation deepening.

”Fine then,” she said, exhaling through her nose. ”Do whatever you want.”

Her gaze shifted past Niva.

Back to Videl.

Sharp.

Direct.

”I just want to ask your friend here...”

A brief pause.

Something darker flickered in her eyes.

”...what she has done with my uncle.”

The words landed heavy.

Not loud.

But sharp enough to cut through the tension like a blade.

And as if that had been a signal—

The students behind Lisa began to stir.

Voices rose.

Not in chaos—but in agreement.

Murmurs layered over murmurs.

Accusation.

Suspicion.

Anger.

The circle tightened.

Just a little.

Just enough.

And in the cente r of it—

Videl stood still.

Silent.

Her blue eyes finally lifted—

Meeting Lisa’s gaze head-on.

No hesitation now.

No confusion.

Only a quiet, gathering storm beneath the surface.
