Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 2691: Chapter 2627: The Token Remains

So it turned out he and Chiang Xiao had this kind of connection too.

Ding Fu took out a box and handed it to Chiang Xiao. ”The token for breaking the engagement is here. I’ve always kept it well hidden. Luckily, there’s still a chance for me to give it back with my own hands.”

”This is the ruby pendant that Lu Shuangshuang returned back then?” Chiang Xiao took it over.

Ding Fu nodded.

The box opened, and inside the pendant shone brilliantly.

As if it had no idea what it stood for or what it had gone through, changing hands several times, yet still quietly blooming with its own light.

”There’s a secret to this gemstone, but only Sixth Young Master knows how to open it.” Ding Fu said, ”All these years, I’ve never tried it myself.”

Sixth Young Master had told her before that there was some kind of secret to it.

Beside the main stone there were two smaller rubies that could be twisted open; hook out the gold ring hidden behind them, and you could directly separate out a tiny ruby ring.

Her hands were deft. After feeling around for a bit, she really did separate out the ring.

And on the inner wall of the gold band, there was a ”Jiang” character engraved.

This was indeed the token that had been given to Lu Shuangshuang back then.

”So that’s how it is.” Ding Fu smiled faintly when he saw the ring.

Chiang Xiao put the things away and said to Ding Fu, ”Uncle Xiao Fu, I’ll call my dad right now. You should talk to him. My dad has always wanted to find you. If he hadn’t had his own accident back then...”

”I know, I know. I’ve never blamed Sixth Young Master. Later on, I could have gone back, but on the way I heard the news that Sixth Young Master had disappeared. I figured there must be a terrifying ghost hiding inside the Jiang Family. I was afraid that if I went back, I’d be silenced instead, so I found a place to hide.”

Back then he was also fortunate that the childhood sweetheart who had followed him all those years was willing to stay with him, marry him, and keep looking after him. Unfortunately, she later passed away from illness.

But he really never blamed Sixth Young Master. He had secretly asked around; after he went missing, Sixth Young Master had kept searching for him, and not long after that he himself met with an accident too.

Chiang Xiao made the call.

It just so happened that Jiang Shiheng picked up in person.

”What is it, Little, still not at ease about Dad? Calling back to check on how the engagement cancellation is going?”

”I do want to ask about that, but Dad, there’s something more important right now. There’s someone by my side who wants to talk to you.”

Chiang Xiao handed the phone to Ding Fu.

Ding Fu’s trembling hand took the phone; his voice was also a bit shaky. He put the receiver to his ear, tinged with an excited sobbing sound.

”Sixth Young Master, i-it’s Xiao Fu...”

Chiang Xiao sniffed and walked out.

She saw Ding Haijing standing in the yard, having picked a rose; his hand was unconsciously tearing the petals off one by one. She paused, then walked toward him.

”What, got a problem with me and now you’re taking it out on my flowers?”

Ding Haijing cast her a sidelong glance. ”Who said that?”

”You sure don’t look like you’re in a good mood.”

His father was hurt to that extent, disfigured and lame. When Ding Haijing was little, it must have been hard on him too, right?

And now that he knew it was all because of Sixth Young Master, because of her father—just because he’d gone to break off the engagement for Sixth Young Master, and then after the Lu Family found out about it, they’d sent people to kill for the sake of getting that ruby back—would Ding Haijing harbor some resentment toward Sixth Young Master and the Jiang Family instead?

And now he’d become her bodyguard. Would his mood be complicated and depressed because of that?

”Am I supposed to be in a good mood?”
