Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 236: Chapter 236: The Honest Man is Pushed to the Edge

Chiang Xiao gripped the machete fiercely, staring at him. ”Whether I dare or not, you can try it. Come on, here’s the machete for you, whoever doesn’t dare to kill the other is a coward!”

Her family had made enemies out of these lazy men today; she would have to face them sooner or later. If she showed any weakness, there was no telling how these men might bully them openly or in secret later on.

Therefore, Chiang Xiao knew that she had to shake them up all at once, to make them understand from the bottom of their hearts that she was not to be trifled with, that they couldn’t just provoke her.

”Chiang Xiao...” Secretary Yao furrowed his brows, his heart lifting in concern.

In truth, he understood Chiang Xiao’s thinking, but he couldn’t believe she would actually dare to do such a thing. Cut someone?

”Little, you...” Ge Dejun and Xu Linjiang were terrified.

Ge Liutao had already stopped crying. Ho Laidi and Song Xiyun were so frightened that they turned tail and ran.

Chiang Xiao watched their retreating figures, her eyes cold and grim.

You can run from the monk, but can you run from the temple?

Chiang Songhai shakily stood up, attempting to snatch the machete from Chiang Xiao’s hand. ”Let me! I, Chiang Songhai, was born and raised in this village, have been foraging and brewing medicinal liquor, making medicinal powder for over two decades. Whenever someone in the village had a fever or got bitten by venomous insects or snakes and came to me for medicine, I seldom charged them. Even if I did, it was just a small fee for my trouble. I’ve been honest for most of my life, always thinking of our fellow villagers with tolerance. But how do you treat me? Come! You’ve gone too far! If you dare, kill me now!”

No one had ever seen Chiang Songhai in such a wild, crazed state before. He looked like he was truly willing to risk everything, yet the tears streaming down his face made him seem all the more pitiable.

Chiang Xiao had always thought her grandfather was too honest to be of any use, yet seeing him like this made her ache for him.

After all, it was the cruel world and the wicked people who were to blame, what was wrong with being honest?

She dodged as he tried to grab the machete and instead supported him, raising the blade towards Wan Niu and the others. ”Grandfather, since we’re not afraid anymore, if they come to steal or beat us again, we will both take up knives to defend ourselves!”

Chiang Songhai clenched his fists tightly, squeezing out a single word from his trembling lips: ”Good!”

Looking at the pair, Wan Niu and the others felt a chill in their hearts.

There’s a saying that a normally docile person, once pushed too far, becomes the least afraid of death. It seemed that Chiang Songhai and Chiang Xiao were just such people.

”Secretary, look at them, all shouting about fighting and killing, and you’re not going to do anything about them!” Wan Niu immediately backed down and shuffled over towards Secretary Yao.

The motion Chiang Xiao had made when she swung the machete at him was too vicious. The blade had nearly chopped into his foot.

Thinking back on how fiercely she had fought, Wan Niu and the others were genuinely afraid she might suddenly strike out, swinging the knife at them.

Chiang Xiao turned to Secretary Yao, saying, ”Secretary Uncle, Wan Niu and the others assaulted my grandparents and my uncle for no reason, I am going to report them to the Public Security Officer to have them arrested!”

This was her plan.

But mentioning it to Secretary Yao first was to give him face, and also to solicit his opinion.

It was exceedingly rare for village affairs to escalate to involving the Public Security Officer. If it came to that, Yao Jubin, the village secretary, would lose face.

However, if he didn’t deal with them, how could she let go of her anger?

Secretary Yao’s face turned grave, and after a moment’s thought, he said, ”Whether or not to report to the Public Security Officer is your decision...”

Before he could finish speaking, Yao Cong cut in, addressing Chiang Xiao, ”Actually, there’s no need to report to the Public Security Officer. Our village’s militia depot is quite empty; locking them up there is good enough.”

As he spoke, he gave Chiang Xiao a meaningful look when nobody was paying attention.

This look had depth.

Chiang Xiao was momentarily taken aback, feeling that Yao Cong was asking her to give Secretary Yao face, to let them handle the matter.
