Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 221: Chapter 221: Has she gotten into trouble?

He simply couldn’t figure out how Chiang Xiao might have had the chance to get to know the Supervisor Guard, let alone a reason for the Supervisor Guard to come looking for her.

Moreover, considering Chiang Xiao’s behavior over the past few days, he thought the change was too drastic. There was one night she hadn’t returned from town, and after much consideration, he could only think it must have been related to that night.

Chiang Songhai wasn’t suspecting Chiang Xiao had done something bad, he just feared she might have tried to do a good deed, helped someone but ended up hurting or offending the other party.

Now, the person had come to their doorstep.

Zhao Xin was immediately taken aback.

He had never anticipated Chiang Songhai might suspect Chiang Xiao of getting into trouble, nor that she would need to go up the mountain to dig for wild vegetables in the middle of the day.

Because he was still in shock, Chiang Songhai grew anxious. He didn’t care about his aching back, and stood up abruptly, grabbing Zhao Xin’s hand with a pleading hoarseness, ”Comrade, I am Chiang Songhai, Chiang Xiao’s grandfather. Her parents are not around, and it was her grandmother and I who raised her since she was young. She is only thirteen years old, still a child. If she has made any mistake, please don’t go after her; take me instead, take me!”

Zhao Xin came to his senses and felt a mix of amusement and unease. He had come to deliver something, but what if he frightened them too much?

He quickly said, ”Big Master, please don’t worry. Chiang Xiao hasn’t done anything wrong! I am not here to take her!”

If there really had been an issue, the Public Security Officer would have come, not just him on his own.

But he dared not voice this complaint.

”Really? There’s really no issue? You’re not here to take our Little?”

”No, absolutely not. I truly do know Chiang Xiao. I came here to bring her some things! Big Master, please calm down and have a seat.”

He hurriedly helped Chiang Songhai to sit down, his back breaking out in a thin layer of cold sweat.

Since Chiang Xiao wasn’t there, he thought it best to leave the things and head out quickly so as not to frighten them even further.

Zhao Xin took down the entire Supervisor Guard backpack, placed it on the table, and said to Chiang Songhai and Ge Liutao, ”These are for Chiang Xiao. When she comes back, just tell her that Captain Meng sent them. She knows. Well then, Big Master, Big Madam, I must be going.”

Seeing the brand-new, bulging military-green backpack, Chiang Songhai didn’t dare to let him leave just yet. He didn’t know what was in it. With Chiang Xiao not there, it was unclear what the situation was. What if it was something they shouldn’t accept, and then Chiang Xiao got angry when she returned?

Now both Chiang Songhai and Ge Liutao subconsciously feared angering Chiang Xiao.

It wasn’t that they were afraid of her, but rather that they felt guilty and ashamed, as if they were always letting her down and making her sad. Just look at today with Ge Dejun and Xu Linjiang coming over, how happy Chiang Xiao seemed. They felt bittersweet about it. If they hadn’t been so helpless, could Chiang Xiao have been happier all along?

Actually, look how thin she is.

Her uncle Ge Dejun could still buy her a few vegetarian buns, Xu Linjiang even brought her a silver bracelet, but they truly had nothing to offer Chiang Xiao.

”Comrade, are you in a hurry?”

”No, not particularly...”

”Then sit down for a while longer. Ah Tao, go ahead, we’re having dumplings tonight. Start kneading the dough now and begin making them. And prepare a sweet egg soup for the young comrade. Hurry.”

Chiang Songhai figured he had to keep Zhao Xin there by any means necessary.

He guessed that Chiang Xiao would be back in two or three hours. Then she could decide what to do for herself.

”No, no, there’s really no need, Big Madam. Don’t bother yourself; we have discipline in the military...”

Chiang Songhai immediately interrupted, ”Not taking a single needle or thread from the common people, right? I know that. No worries, you’re here for Little, aren’t you? Then just consider it a visit to Big Master and Big Madam’s home. It has nothing to do with the military.”

”Big Master, I really don’t need anything. I should be getting back...”

”What’s the rush? Comrade, where are you from?”
