Death Guns In Another World

Chapter 2096: On the way back

This was the final exchange.

The wyvern gathered all its remaining strength. Its scales began to glow with pale blue light. The air around it dropped to freezing. Frost crawled up the rocks. Its wounds stopped bleeding, sealed by its own cold.

It was going to unleash everything it had in one last attack.

Alex and Saeko stood side by side. They didnʼt look at each other. They didnʼt need to.

Alex raised his right arm. His black fingers curled into a fist. Energy gathered there, dark and heavy. Not fire. Not lightning. Something older. Something that remembered breaking armies and unmaking monsters.

Saeko raised her katana. The wind answered, but not as a helper. It answered as a servant. It coiled around her blade, tighter and tighter, compressing until the air itself screamed. The edge of her sword began to glow with a sharp, silver light.

The wyvern screamed. It leaped.

Alex punched the air.

A shockwave of pure force, visible as a rippling distortion, shot from his fist. It hit the wyvern in the chest, stopping its charge mid-air, pinning it against the spireʼs rock.

Saeko threw her katana.

The blade, wrapped in that screaming, compressed wind, flew straight and true. It hit the wyvern in the throat, piercing through scales, through muscle, through everything.

The wyvern froze. Its mad eyes went wide. Then they went blank.

It slid down the rock, leaving a long smear of blue blood. It hit the ground and did not move.

Silence returned to the Jagged Spire.

The wind stopped howling. The frost began to melt. The clouds above started to break apart, letting thin, pale sunlight through.

Alex and Saeko stood still, catching their breath. Their bodies ached. Their lungs burned. But they were alive.

Alex walked over to the fallen wyvern. He looked at it for a long moment. It was a magnificent creature, even in death. Its scales glittered like ice in the weak sun. Its wings, though torn, were beautiful. It had been driven mad by grief. It had not been evil.

He placed a hand on its cold snout, a silent respect. Then he pulled Saekoʼs katana from its throat and wiped it clean on the grass.

He walked back to her and held out the blade, hilt first.

She took it. Their fingers touched. A brief warmth in the cold air.

She sheathed her sword. He holstered his gun.

Together, without a word, they turned and walked away from the Spire. Behind them, the wyvernʼs body began to freeze, preserved in ice, a monument to its rage and sorrow.

They found their horses waiting where they had left them. They mounted up and rode back down the mountain.

The mission was complete. The pass was safe again. And somewhere, in the cold silence of the Jagged Spire, the wyvernʼs mad, grieving heart finally rested.

---

Three days later, the guild master slid a heavy pouch of gold across the counter. ”Contract complete,” he said, his one eye studying them. ”You two are something else.”

Alex took the pouch. He didnʼt count it. He just tucked it away.

The guild master hesitated. ”The wyvern,” he said quietly. ”Its mate. The poachers who killed it. We caught them. Theyʼll hang.”

Alex nodded once. He looked at Saeko. She gave a small nod back.

They left the guild hall together, stepping out into the busy street. Merchants called out their wares. Children ran laughing between carts. Life continued.

They walked side by side, not speaking, not touching. They didnʼt need to.

The silence between them held everything that mattered. Trust. Respect. Understanding. A bond that didnʼt need words, forged in fire and ice, in victory and in the quiet acknowledgment of a grief they had ended.

It was enough.

It was everything.

They rode until the sun touched the mountains. Then Alex raised his hand and stopped.

”This is good,” he said quietly.

They made camp in a small clearing surrounded by old pines. The ground was soft with needles. A small stream ran nearby, its water clear and cold.

Alex set up the tent. Saeko gathered dry wood. She didnʼt use magic to start the fire. She used flint and steel, striking sparks until the kindling caught. The flames grew slowly, casting warm light on their faces.

They ate simple food. Bread and cheese. Dried meat. Apples that were slightly soft but still sweet. They passed a canteen back and forth, drinking cold stream water.

The fire crackled. The stream murmured. The wind moved through the pine needles with a soft, sighing sound.

When they finished eating, Alex leaned back against a smooth stone. Saeko sat beside him, close enough that their shoulders touched. She didnʼt ask. He didnʼt move away.

Above them, the sky turned from orange to purple to deep, endless black. Stars appeared one by one, then hundreds, then thousands. The Milky Way stretched across the darkness like a river of spilled milk and crushed diamonds.

Saeko looked up. Her face was soft in the firelight, all the sharp warrior edges smoothed away. ”Itʼs beautiful,” she whispered.

Alex looked at her. ”Yes,” he said. ”It is.”

She turned and caught his gaze. A small smile touched her lips. She didnʼt say anything. She didnʼt need to.

She leaned her head against his shoulder. He shifted slightly, making himself more comfortable for her. His hand found hers, fingers lacing together loosely.

The fire burned low. Embers glowed orange and red, pulsing like a slow heartbeat. An owl called somewhere in the darkness. Another answered from far away.

They stayed like that for a long time. Not talking. Not moving. Just breathing together, watching the stars wheel slowly across the sky.

Sleep came gently. Saekoʼs breathing slowed first. Her grip on his hand relaxed. Alex waited a few more minutes, listening to her steady breath and the sounds of the peaceful night.

Then he closed his eyes and let sleep take him too.

The fire died to ash. The stream kept talking. The stars kept turning.

And in the quiet wilderness, two people who had faced monsters and gods and everything in between simply rested, together, in the silence that held all their words for them.
