Death Guns In Another World

Chapter 2094: A Day between

The morning light was soft and new. It spilled through the trees, painting everything in gold and green. Alex and Saeko were in their usual clearing behind the waterfall.

The roar of the water was their morning music.

They faced each other. No armor. Just simple clothes. No magic swords. Just wooden practice blades.

They bowed.

And they began.

It was a slow dance at first. A testing of balance. A tapping of wood on wood. Tap. Tap. Slide. Tap.

Saeko moved first. A quick step, a low swing at his legs. Alex blocked it easily, his movement smooth like flowing water. He didnʼt push back. He redirected her force, sending her blade sliding past him.

She recovered. Came at him again. A thrust. A high slash. Her movements were sharp and clean. The wind wasnʼt a weapon today. It was just a helper. It whispered around her, making her footwork lighter, her turns faster.

Alex met every move. He wasnʼt attacking. He was teaching. Guiding. When her strike was too wide, heʼd tap her wrist with his wooden blade. A reminder. When her stance was off, heʼd press gently on her shoulder. A correction.

”Your energy is all in your arms,” he said, his voice calm over the waterfallʼs noise. He tapped her stomach lightly with his practice sword. ”It starts here. In your center. Let it flow.”

She nodded. Took a breath. Tried again.

This time, her movement was different. More whole. Her swing came from her hips, powered by her core. The wooden sword cut through the air with a stronger, cleaner whoosh.

Alex smiled. A small, proud smile. ”Better.”

They practiced like that for an hour. Strike, parry, correct, repeat. It wasnʼt about winning. It was about polishing. Making every movement perfect. Making instinct and technique become the same thing.

Finally, Alex lowered his blade. ”Enough. Your form is solid. Now, letʼs work on speed.”

This part was different. They put the wooden swords down.

Alex held up his hand, palm out. ”Hit my palm. As fast as you can. Donʼt think. Just react.”

Saeko focused. Her hand shot out. A punch. He caught it softly.

Again. A jab. A chop. He deflected each one, his hands moving in tiny, efficient circles. She sped up. Her hands became a blur. Left, right, high, low. He matched her, his movements even smaller, even calmer. It was like watching a hummingbird defend itself from a storm of petals.

”Good,” he murmured. ”But youʼre telegraphing. Your eyes give you away.”

She frowned, concentrating. She tried to hide her intent. She feinted left, then struck right.

He caught her wrist anyway. ”Still thinking. Donʼt think. Feel.”

They kept at it until the sun was high and hot. Until sweat dotted their brows and their breath came fast. Until Saekoʼs strikes were fast, silent, and hard to predict. Until Alex was finally using both hands to keep up.

He caught her last punch and held it. They were both breathing hard.

”Break,” he said, letting go.

They sat by the lake, drinking cool water, letting the breeze dry their skin. They didnʼt talk. They just enjoyed the tired, good feeling of a hard workout done well.

The afternoon was lazy. They rested. Read. Alex tinkered with something from his item box. Saeko cleaned her real katana, the care a quiet ritual.

As the sun began to dip, painting the sky in pastels, Alex stood up. ”Picnic time,” he said.

They walked to a different spot. A high, grassy meadow overlooking the whole valley. The view was breathtaking. Mountains, forest, and a winding river far below.

Alex spread out a soft, checkered blanket. With a wave of his hand, the feast appeared from his item box.

It wasnʼt fancy dungeon food. It was simple, perfect picnic food.

A crusty loaf of bread, still warm. A wedge of sharp, white cheese. A bowl of fresh strawberries, so red they looked like jewels. Sliced cold chicken, seasoned with herbs. A small clay pot of honey. A bottle of chilled, fruity white wine and two crystal cups.

They sat down. The grass was soft. The air was warm and sweet.

They ate with their hands. Tearing bread, dipping it in honey. Eating strawberries by the stem. The flavors were bright and clean. The wine was cool and slightly sweet, tasting of summer peaches.

They talked then. Not about training or monsters. About silly things. Old memories that made them laugh. Stories from Alexʼs old world that sounded like impossible fairy tales to Saeko. She told him about palace gossip from her childhood, making the stuffy officials sound like clowns.

They laughed. Real, easy laughter that mixed with the chirping of evening crickets.

As the last light of day turned the sky deep purple and orange, Alex lay back on the blanket, hands behind his head. Saeko leaned back on her elbows beside him.

Fireflies woke up in the meadow. Tiny, floating lights, blinking on and off. They drifted around them, making the twilight magical.

”Itʼs peaceful,” Saeko said softly, watching a firefly land on a blade of grass near her hand.

”It is,” Alex agreed, his voice relaxed. ”These are the days we fight for.”

She looked at him. His profile was sharp against the darkening sky. The constant tension was gone from his face. He looked at peace.

She lay back fully, her head close to his shoulder. Together, they watched the first stars appear. One by one, like pins in a velvet curtain.

No monsters. No dungeons. No titles or destinies. Just bread, cheese, strawberries, and a sky full of quiet stars. A perfect, simple day between the storms. A reminder of what normal could feel like. And a promise, silent between them, to find more days just like this one.

Moments like this were what make it worthwhile. To maintain this they have to work hard and it was what they had been doing. Alex could not help but miss the others he wished to see them.
