Death Guns In Another World

Chapter 2090: The Echo of Unmaker

The Tempest Fang ripped through the spear of enemies like it was paper. It shredded the Wind Slicers, turning the entire mass into a cloud of harmless black mist and glittering crystal powder that rained down softly on the white sand like strange, dark snow.

Silence returned to the arena.

Saeko stood in the center, her katana lowered, her chest rising and falling with deep breaths. The emerald light faded from her eyes. The white sand around her was covered in the fine, dark dust of her enemies. Not a single Wind Slicer remained.

Slowly, Alex pushed himself off the wall. He walked across the sand toward her, his boots making no sound. He stopped in front of her.

She looked up at him, her face flushed with effort and victory.

For a long moment, he just looked at her. Then, he nodded. It was a single, firm nod.

”That,” he said, his voice full of a deep, resonant pride, ”was masterful. You didnʼt just use the wind, Saeko. You became the storm. Youʼve surpassed the technique. Youʼve found the spirit of it.”

A wide, true smile broke across her face, brighter than any magic. His praise was the final, perfect reward. She had done it. She had shown him, and herself, exactly what she was capable of.

She sheathed her katana. ”They made the mistake of challenging me in my own sky,” she said, her voice tired but strong.

Alex returned her smile, a rare, full one that reached his eyes. ”They wonʼt make that mistake again.”

He looked toward the far end of the arena, where a new portal had silently opened. ”Come on,” he said. ”Letʼs keep moving. I want to see what you do next.”

Together, they walked through the fallen dark snow, leaving the silent arena behind. The student had not just matched the teacher on this floor; she had painted a masterpiece of power and grace, and he had been honored to watch.

The arena of wind and shadow faded behind them. The next floor felt different the moment they stepped in. There was no beautiful garden, no maze, no storm. It was just a flat, gray plain that stretched out into a foggy nothingness. The ground was hard-packed dirt and stone, and the sky was a dull, unchanging white. It was empty. And silent.

Too silent.

Saeko felt her hand tighten on her katana. ”I donʼt like this,” she said, her voice low.

Alex didnʼt answer. He was staring straight ahead, his body tense in a way she hadnʼt seen since their first days of training. It wasnʼt fear. It was recognition.

”Theyʼre here,” he said, his voice a low growl.

From the fog, they came. Not a swarm, not a few giants. An army. They were monsters, but not like any in the upper floors. These were War-Spawn, creatures from the oldest, bloodiest layers of reality. Hulking beasts with armored plates and axe-blades for arms. Slim, four-armed hunters that skittered on clawed feet. Floating, one-eyed horrors that bled a dark, corrupting light. There were hundreds. A tide of pure, snarling malice that began to flow across the plain toward them, shaking the ground.

This was not a test for a single element. This was war.

Saeko took a deep breath, her wind starting to swirl. She was ready to fight to her last breath beside him.

But Alex put a hand on her arm. ”Stay behind me,” he said. His voice was different. It had a weight, an echo to it sheʼd only heard in whispers from his past. ”Just for this one. Watch.”

She saw his eyes change. The warm, familiar gaze she knew vanished. In its place, his heterochromia blazed to life with a cold, cosmic light. One eye was a deep, freezing Arctic blue. The other was a burning, molten mercury silver. Looking into them was like looking into a star going supernova and a glacier forming at the same time.

He didnʼt summon his sword.

He simply started walking toward the oncoming horde. Alone.

The first line of armored beasts was fifty yards away, closing fast. Alex raised his right arm. Saeko saw it clearly now—it wasnʼt just his arm. From the shoulder down, it was pure, polished black, like obsidian carved into the shape of a limb. It was the relic of an old, unimaginable wound, now stronger than any earthly metal.

In his black hand, his magi-tech revolver appeared. He didnʼt aim. He just fired.

Crack-hiss. Crack-hiss. Crack-hiss.

The shots werenʼt normal. The mana bullets glowed with a strange, purple light and left tiny, swirling distortions in the air behind them. Each shot found a mark. An armored beastʼs head snapped back, a hole punched clean through its skull plate. A skittering hunterʼs leg vanished at the joint. The bullets didnʼt just kill; they erased the part they hit.

But the horde didnʼt care. They kept coming. Thirty yards.

Alex holstered the gun. He broke into a run. Not a sprint, but a steady, ground-eating pace that was somehow more terrifying. He ran straight for the thickest part of the horde.

Twenty yards.

The lead beast, a monster the size of a truck, roared and swung a bladed arm down to split him in two.

Alexʼs black arm came up. He didnʼt block the blade. He caught it.

SCHRAAAAANG!

The sound was a shriek of metal meeting something infinitely harder. The monsterʼs blade shattered against his black palm. Before the beast could even look surprised, Alexʼs black fist shot forward. It hit the monsterʼs head not with a punch, but with an impact that looked like a cannonball strike.

The monsterʼs skull didnʼt crack. It imploded, collapsing inward before the whole creature was flung backward, crashing into five others.

He was in the horde now.

What followed was not a fight. It was a demonstration. A memory of what he once was, flickering back to life.

His black arm was a wrecking ball. He would grab a monster by the neck and use its body to smash two others aside. He would drive his fist straight through armored chests. He moved with a terrifying, relaxed grace, every motion ending in absolute destruction. He was stronger than the giants, faster than the Wind Slicers.

But it was his eyes that told Saeko the true change was happening.

A floating horror fired a beam of corrupting energy at him. Alex turned his silver eye toward it. The beam hit an invisible wall an inch from his face and… stopped. It hung in the air, frozen. With a flick of his wrist, the frozen beam reversed direction and shot back, destroying the horror.

Time. He was bending time.

Four hunters leaped at him from all sides, their claws extended. Alexʼs blue eye glowed. The air around the four hunters thickened, turned syrupy. To Saeko, it looked like they were suddenly moving through deep water, their attacks slowed to a crawl. Alex casually stepped between them, his black hands snapping their necks one by one before time snapped back to normal and their bodies slumped to the ground.

Space. He was warping space.

He was a storm of controlled, impossible power. He would fire his gun, and the bullet would curve around three monsters to hit a fourth hiding behind them. He would be in one place, and then blur, and be ten feet away, having moved through a space that didnʼt seem to exist. Monsters would swing at where he was, only to hit empty air because he was already a fraction of a second in the past, or a step into a folded piece of reality.

Saeko watched, her katana forgotten in her hand, her mouth slightly open in awe. This was the shadow of the man he used to be. The Unmaker. The warrior who didnʼt just fight armies, but rewrote the rules of the battlefield to make their existence impossible. He wasnʼt at full strength—she could see the strain around his eyes, the slight sheen of sweat on his brow—but the echo was there, loud and clear.

The horde, which had been mindless in its rage, began to feel fear. They started to pull back, to try and surround him at a distance.

Alex stopped in the center of a ring of broken bodies. He took a deep breath, his glowing eyes narrowing. He raised both hands—his black one and his normal one.

”Enough,” he said, and his voice echoed across the plain.

His silver and blue eyes blazed like twin suns. He clapped his hands together.

There was no sound.

But a wave of pure, silent force exploded from him. It wasnʼt fire or wind. It was a wave of distorted time and compressed space. It washed over the remaining hundred monsters.

To Saeko, it looked like a heat haze. The monsters at the edge of the wave simply… came apart. They didnʼt fall. They unwound. They peeled into strips of fading color and dust, dissolving into the gray air as if they were being erased from a drawing.

In three heartbeats, it was over.

The gray plain was empty again. The only sound was Alexʼs steady breathing. The blinding light in his eyes faded, returning to their normal color, though they looked tired. The impossible tension left his body. He flexed his black hand, looking at it as if seeing it for the first time.

He turned and walked back to Saeko. He looked more drained than sheʼd ever seen him, but there was a new light in his normal gaze. A quiet satisfaction.

She couldnʼt find words. She just stared at him, the image of him clapping his hands and erasing an army burned into her mind forever.

He stopped in front of her and managed a small, tired smile. ”Itʼs coming back,” he said simply, his voice hoarse. ”Slowly. But itʼs there.”

Finally, Saeko found her voice. It was a whisper. ”That was… you.”

”Just a shadow,” he said, shaking his head. ”A faint echo.” He looked at her, and his smile grew a little warmer. ”But itʼs enough. For now, itʼs enough to keep you safe.”

He put a hand on her shoulder, a simple, grounding touch. The man she knew was back, but now she had seen the titan that lived inside him, waking up from a long sleep. It didnʼt scare her. It filled her with a fierce, blazing pride.

The portal to the next floor shimmered ahead. They walked toward it, side by side.
