Chapter 969: Chapter 970: Audacious Beyond Measure! (4 Updates)

Iron Wolf City, City Lord Mansion.

Early in the morning, City Lord Long Xiaao got up early, as usual, preparing to inspect the training of the City Guard Corps’ guards.

But today, the City Lord Mansion welcomed two special guests.

One of them was none other than Prince Jing.

Back when the Southern Army Commander ordered the supervision of the Jing Royal Mansion’s construction, Long Xiaao naturally was aware and had even gone to visit Prince Jing, but unfortunately, he hadn’t met the Prince.

Unexpectedly, today this Prince Jing visited in person.

”City Lord, Prince Jing’s visit, should we...”

The old caretaker’s words were somewhat hesitant, clearly uncertain whether he should say more.

”Should we what, if you have something to say, just say it.”

Long Xiaao glanced at the old caretaker, frowning slightly.

This old caretaker was left by the previous City Lord and naturally had some understanding of the situation in the Southern Border.

”In my humble opinion, City Lord, it might be best if you avoid meeting guests,” the old caretaker slowly suggested.

”Oh?” Long Xiaao stared at the old caretaker, ”Why should this City Lord avoid meeting Prince Jing?”

”The principle of self-preservation, City Lord, you should be aware of it?”

The old caretaker smiled subtly, ”City Lord, I’ve said all I can, of course, how to act specifically, I’ll still follow your orders.”

”Self-preservation?”

Long Xiaao snorted lightly. In the first three months after arriving at Iron Wolf City, the Old City Lord had explained many things to him. The military forces in Iron Wolf City, in a sense, were not entirely local garrison forces, some having intricate connections with the Southern Army.

Even though Long Xiaao had brought a batch of brothers from the Black Armored Cavalry Army when he arrived, it did not mean he could truly be the master of this patch of land in Iron Wolf City.

”We are all ministers of the Emperor, Prince Jing is royalty, and thus our master. How can a minister avoid seeing their master?”

Ignoring the old caretaker’s advice, Long Xiaao casually threw the morning practice spear back onto the weapon rack, wiped his sweat, and then strode toward the main hall.

The old caretaker sighed lightly, shaking his head with a smile, ”Still so young after all!”

...

”Subordinate, pay respects to Prince Jing!”

Long Xiaao walked briskly out of the main hall, his voice reaching before his body.

The next moment, he stood firmly in the great hall, his body as straight as an arrow, a testament to the military discipline drilled into him in the Black Armored Cavalry Army, unchanged for life.

In the main hall, Moo Feng, sitting in the main seat, quickly stood and laughed loudly, ”City Lord Long Xiaao, sorry for such an early disturbance.”

Long Xiaao then raised his head. This Prince Jing appeared much more delicate than imagined, making it hard to understand why the Emperor would send such a Prince to the Southern Border.

With just him, how could he suppress an old fox like Yuan Tiangang?

Yet, when he saw the young man beside Prince Jing, his eyelid twitched violently, and he exclaimed, ”Ling... Brother Ling!”

”Hahaha!”

Ling Feng laughed freely, ”General Long, it’s been a long time! No, it should be City Lord Long now!”

”What General or City Lord?” Long Xiaao laughed heartily, ”Brother, you’re being too polite, hahaha!”

Back then, when Ling Feng met Long Xiaao in Iron Wolf City, Long Xiaao repeatedly urged Ling Feng to join the military to serve the country.

Unexpectedly, in just half a year, they met again.

”Old brother, you’re still the same, not changed at all!” Ling Feng squinted his eyes and smiled.

On the side, Moo Feng was taken aback. It seems Ling Feng and this City Lord Long Xiaao were old acquaintances!

Long Xiaao smiled faintly, ”No wonder you weren’t willing to join our Black Armored Cavalry Army back then, turns out you were with Prince Jing.”

”Old brother jests, back then I didn’t know any Prince Jing.”

Ling Feng shook his head and smiled, ”To be honest, I met Prince Jing back at the Heavenly Position Academy.”

Moo Feng quickly waved his hand and said, ”Brother Feen, let’s not be formal like ’Prince Jing’ in private, since City Lord Long is your brother, naturally he is my brother as well. By calculation, I should call you Brother Long!”

”How can I bear that!” Long Xiaao secretly broke into a sweat and quickly said, ”No, no, Your Highness is a Prince, whereas I am merely a minister.”

”In private, there’s no need to regard me as a Prince,” Moo Feng smiled gently and cupped his fists to Long Xiaao.

Ling Feng squinted his eyes with a smile, Moo Feng was quite adept, knowing to establish rapport first with Long Xiaao.

The three engaged in small talk, and over time, Long Xiaao didn’t protest Moo Feng’s calling him Brother Long, though he dared not address Moo Feng casually as Little Brother Mo.

After some pleasantries, Ling Feng got to the point, speaking seriously, ”Old Brother Long, you should be aware that the Emperor has sent Prince Jing to the South as a military supervisor, right?”

”Mm, I’ve heard of it, but...”

Long Xiaao glanced at Moo Feng, then forced himself to say, ”But as Prince Jing supervises, he retreats to Iron Wolf City avoiding the frontline, isn’t this somewhat unreasonable?”

Long Xiaao was straightforward, whereas a veteran official in the bureaucratic circles wouldn’t have dared to voice such thoughts.

”That is exactly the point.”

Ling Feng said seriously, ”Old Brother Long, do you truly believe Prince Jing chose to leave Tianmang Fortress and hide away in this Jing Royal Mansion like a turtle?”

”Brother Ling, what do you mean by this?” Long Xiaao frowned, sensing a hint of something as a seasoned general.

”Yuan Tiangang, the old fox, wielding his power, ignores the Ninth Prince and has effectively confined him in the Jing Royal Mansion. What do you think this old fox intends to do?”

Ling Feng slapped the table, indignantly, ”This old fox, I reckon he wants to rebel!”

”Re... Rebel?”

Long Xiaao’s eyelids jumped wildly. Ling Feng dare utter such words, his boldness was astonishing.

He swallowed hard, chuckling awkwardly, ”Brother Ling, such talk is dangerous!”

Even Moo Feng was startled by Ling Feng’s words.

In the Empire, probably only Ling Feng dared to say Yuan Tiangang intended to rebel!

Yet, suggesting he would rebel was absolutely unrealistic; the old guy hadn’t grown that bold.

”Defying the Emperor’s decree, if that isn’t rebellion, what is it?”

Ling Feng hummed coldly, ”That Yuan Tiangang treats Prince Jing like dirt, manipulating him. If he dares treat a prince this way, isn’t he acting like a local tyrant in the Southern Border?”

”This...” Long Xiaao frowned and looked at Moo Feng, noting Moo Feng’s deeply furrowed brows, indicating that Ling Feng’s words were not entirely exaggerated.

”Old Brother Long, you should understand, the Black Armored Cavalry Army receives direct orders from the Royal Family. Now, the Ninth Prince has no real power within the Southern Army, and is not even allowed to set foot in Tianmang Fortress. Think about it, what about your position?”

”Currently there’s a Demon Clan invasion, Yuan Tiangang has no time to deal with you. Yet, once the situation stabilizes, I’m certain that old fox won’t allow such a royal-supported force to remain active under his nose, will he?”

Ling Feng’s argument was piercing, causing Long Xiaao’s frown to deepen, recalling the previous City Lord’s words and the old caretaker’s warnings about Yuan Tiangang’s influence in the Southern Border.

The name of the Royal Family pales in comparison to Yuan Tiangang’s within the Southern Border.

To the Royal Family, to the Empire, it’s undeniably a threat!
